This fucking thing broke.

Is there anything I can do or do I need to buy a new one?
>>
>>59308566
just wrap some electrical tape around it
>>
>>59308578
It was like that a few weeks back.

Now its completely cut.
>>
thatll be 80 shekels, goy
>>
>>59308566
Here's a trick I picked up on my last tour.

>Take the cable and unplug it from the wall.
>Rinse the cut end of the cable under some water. Tap's fine
Now it gets tricky
>Hold the cut end of the cable towards the cut end of the device
>Wrap in electric tape
>Plug cord into wall
>unplug in 20 seconds and wait about an hour
>Plug it back in.
And that's it. I'm not a scientist, but I think the water creates an active gateway for the electricity to pass through from each end of the cable or something.
>>
>>59308566
What am I looking at?
>>
>>59308566
Don't you have electronics repair shops, it's a common problem so there should be people fixing it.
At the very least I'm sure the chinks sell replacement cables.
Blame Apple for always putting form before function.

Crack it open, desolder the wires on the main board. Get some parachord with a cool texture. Pull the inside string out. Put some shrink tubing on first, then slowly push the parachord onto the wire. cut out the broken part of the wire, and put the good wire through the grey rubber support. solder back, put everything in place, and put a shit ton of pressure on the power adapter to get it to click closed.

Warning, don't attempt if you're a retard.

also you can probably just do the last part without the parachord but that's your loss.

You can buy just the wire and replace it yourself.
>>
Sigh.

I'm an Apple salesman, and of all the things I sell, I feel the worst about these adapters. They're flimsy, they're huge, and they're $79 apiece, not to mention the consumer confusion created by the 85W (for the 15" rMBP) and 45W (for everything else) variants.

This is one of my favorite things about the 2016 Macbooks. While everyone is busy crowing about LMAO DONGLES KEK BTFO, most people are missing that, as a result of the switch to USB-C, these shitty fucking proprietary power bricks are officially dead, and you can now buy whatever USB-C cable you want to charge your god damn Macbook. Good riddance.

>>59309061
>>59309137

See above, this cable is now obsolete in favor of an industry-standard one. But nobody noticed that, they were all too busy masturbating over a thousand mostly-hypothetical dongles.
>>
>>59309138
>>59309183
i'm too lazy for that shit. mine started stripping at the magsafe end. i have it taped up with electrical tape for now, but i don't leave it connected while i'm not around. had a keboard like that before and it started to smoke and catch fire at one point.

LAMO DONGLES KEK BETFO
>>
>>59309244
You are correct in that and thank God, but nevertheless LMAO DONGLES KEK BTFO is correct too, sadly. Nobody is going to convince me that there was no space for an USB A, HDMI and 3.5 jack in that chassis. Proper work laptop vendors can do it (oh also SD reader but I'm ot gonna be anal here).

LMAO DONGLES KEK BTFO

>>59309762

1) Have you seen the new Macbooks? They're pretty goddamn thin. Looking at them (as I do daily), I have very little trouble believing that it would've been disproportionately difficult to get anything but USB-C on there. The SD reader, though, I'll give you. That would've fit.

2) There *is* a 3.5mm jack. Both the 12" Macbook and the new MBPs have 3.5mm jacks.

3) Everything's going to be USB-C in a couple years anyway. We miss USB-A now, but we won't by 2020.

You can stop buying apple products.
>>
>>59309244
That's what I thought too, yes the loss of magsafe is a shame but not having to spend $80 on a cable that breaks easily is a godsend

I still meme that they should have put two thunderbolt 2 ports and 2 normal USB ports

>>

The fucking-anything-but-Apple-cables doesn't have this problem
>>
>>59310698

Maybe they don't have fraying problems as bad, but I'd venture that just about all laptop power bricks are as obnoxious otherwise. Large, unwieldy, often proprietary -- HP even has a proprietary USB-C charger. The connector is standard, but the laptop performs a hardware-level check to see if it's the right charger anyway.
>>
>>59309198
they sell the cable, fine
but how come nobody ever got the idea to create an enclosure for the charger itself, so we can fix the old one
so many people throw away a fully functionnal charger only because of a snapped cable

LMAO DONGLES KEK BTFO
>>
>>59310735

Well, they did obsolete the charger. It's standardized now.

>>59310748

As laptops go, from what I've seen, Macs are the path of least resistance. Windows laptops can and will jack you hard. There's almost always a compromise: a shitty screen, or a shitty keyboard, or a trackpad that isn't Precision, or a webcam that's on the bottom edge of the monitor instead of the top, or excessive fan noise, or a shitty hinge, etc. It's always something.

When you pick up a Macbook, though, you can be reasonably assured that the thing is going to be in basic working order, the design is going to be sensible, and if something's wrong, there's a (usually nearby) place you can take it to be fixed by someone who's guaranteed to know what they're doing and not fuck over your warranty.

Shit, even if you just don't like the thing, they're all covered by a 14-day no-questions-asked return policy.

>>59310754

Just because I sell Apple products, that doesn't make me a manipulative shill. I steer people clear of shit like the Mac Mini and any iMac model that has a HDD instead of an SSD, and I will not hesitate to point a person in another direction if I can't serve their needs. I've never lied to anyone to sell something, not even once.

DONGLED

AGAIN
>>
>>59311045

Because no non-Apple power brick has ever, in the history of mankind, frayed.

Plus, like I've been saying, those days have been over for a while now. No more proprietary power cables.
>>
>>59308566
lol mine broke there like a year ago... Still getting by though.

At this point it's down to like literally 5 strands of wire that don't even touch unless I get enough power for the current to jump the gap and hold it together. Getting pretty burned out around the gap this shit is gonna burn my house down sooner or later.
>>
>>59310676
Bullshit I always wrapped mine proper still broke.
>>
Spend $12 on a Chink knockoff and hope your new charger doesn't burn your house down while you sleep (but if it does, to perish thereby will be a merciful release from this vale of sorrows)
>>
>>59308566
Disassemble, cut, desolder, strip, resolder, reassemble, enjoy.
>>
>>59310676
Those cable wrapping hooks are genius. They look harmless and when the power cord breaks the user thinks it's their fault.

Meanwhile apple rakes in $80/charger. Master design. Jobs would not approve of usb-c...
>>
>>59312292

I like how people simultaneously say Apple is going downhill *and* that Apple is making higher-quality products than Jobs would have allowed. Which is it, /g/? You can't have both.
>>
>>59308566
replace the cable, it's an easy solder.
or buy another one goyim

If you're near a tech hub, check the Goodwill stores. Some of the smaller Goodwill groups have tons of them in stock for $10-15.

>be me
>live near Seattle
>go to Ballard Goodwill
>see old Magsafe briks
>$10 each
>99% they work fine because Seattle Goodwill tests their shit before they put it on the shelf
>>
Just put some sugru on it
>>
>>59309244
I'm a technical specialist. I always feel bad when I have to replace cables out of warranty.

Though OP if you go to the genius bar you can save a little bit of money, I honestly can't remember the price off the top of my head. I think its $60 something.
>>
>>59309244
Kek I work for Apple Tech support. About to be promoted to a T2
>>
>>59310822
I think the biggest thing I like about working for them is the support. I will pay extra (ie Applecare Plus) just for the support.

Like when I have a person at the bar that cracks their iPad Pro display. $50 versus $600 is a huge difference.

Plus I get to help people out who are actually in need. It at least makes me feel good.

Our sales team is the same way with the Mini and the iMacs.
>>
>>59312613

>Plus I get to help people out who are actually in need. It at least makes me feel good.

Yeah, same. When people visit, and they have a problem, we're (in many cases, anyway) both qualified and empowered to help them on the spot, and it doesn't always have to feel like a shakedown because of the awesome warranty coverage. The job does tend to leave a good taste in my mouth.

Last week, I helped resuscitate a woman's iPhone after it ceased to function during her mother's funeral proceedings. It had a ton of pictures/videos/whatever on it, it was her lifeline, everyone was trying to send their condolences, and she just... lost it. When I recovered it, she hugged me, and was almost in tears as she left. It was awesome.

The saddest part? While her phone was non-functional, she had been using her mother's phone. Her *dead* mother's phone.
>>
>>59309113
A shitty proprietary bullshit cable with no strain relief designed to be pretty rather than to work well which is notorious for breaking and being expensive to replace due to its proprietary nature.
>>
How about you make your own cable off of what is salvageable without opening the connectors or power wart - and then hotglue the hell out of where you splice
>>
>>59308566
Yeah, you can reseal the cord and make it good as new. First you have to mix about a cup of bleach and ammonia together. Do this in the bathroom but be careful not to turn the ventilation on or leave a window open, the neighbors might object to the smell.

After 5-10 minutes, you can paint this mixture onto the cord, it'll be fixed good as new.
>>
>>59310822
Keep fighting the good fight anon. Folks like you make me think there's *some* hope left in the corporate world
