And to add, the RX580 is just a refresh of the RX480 with like a 7% overclock. You can just overclock a RX480 for the same result. There's no architecture changes at all. It's the same as how the RX280 was the 7970 and it was the RX290 that was new.

Also, it's increasingly looking like the Raven Ridge APUs will be more powerful than the RX470.
AMD keeps saying that Vega is an HBM only architecture, and that's why there isn't a Vega based RX580 coming and it's instead a polaris refresh. Like how Fiji was HBM only. Its memory and cache controllers are hardware controllers made for HBM.

Yet... they are also saying Raven Ridge, coming h2 2017, are Vega APUs.
The only logical conclusion to that is that Raven Ridge will either use infinity fabric to use the HBM of a discrete GPU, and/or they will come with probably 1GB or 2GB of HBM and also scale with a discrete GPU.

AMD seems to have said in the AMD that they are still making 28nm Bristol Ridge APUs.

It seems to me that Zen + Vega APUs = enthusiast with HBM, and Bristil Ridge APUs = cheap laptop shit.
Whereas most people's assumption is that Raven Ridge wouldn't have HBM and would just be a significant bump up from Bristol Ridge, it instead looks like they're going to run both SKUs simultaneously and that Raven Ridge is going to be a huge leap forward.

So anyway, why get an RX580 when you can get a 4c/8t Raven Ridge APU that's almost as powerful and probably cheaper than a 1400X+RX580 combined, and will also dual graphics with a discrete GPU that you add later?

390 and 390x come out, nothing but overclocked refreshes of the 290 and 290x. At least they packed 8 gigs whereas 8 gig versions of the 290 and 290x were rare and expensive. In fact, I think it was only a 290x exclusive.

Those who didn't buy the 290x during the 970 era price cuts (just before 390/390x came out) missed out.

And then Fury came out and nobody was interested. It was expensive, hard to find and not really all that better than the Nvidia alternatives.

I hope things will turn out different this time around, but it doesn't smell anything like it.

OC/UV are arbitrary and relative.
You could easily argue that half the GCN cards have been factory overclocks.

The underlying problem is that GCN had lower perf/area and perf/cycle than newer Nvidia architectures, so the only tool they had at their disposal was to murder perf/W by cranking up clocks and voltages.
