Viable on GNOME or a standalone WM. Not yet on KDE. Never on XFCE.
Yes, when no app depends on it anymore. Until then there's XWayland as a shim.

XFCE is being ported to GTK3 so it will work on Wayland eventually.
KDE already works on Wayland, but is buggy af
GNOME does work on Wayland and isn't buggy. It ships by default with Wayland on Fedora and Arch

Wayland is fully viable, but only use it with Sway or GNOME.
