What do you guys think about VPNs? Is it worth paying for one?

It's an added layer of protection from your isp.
But does not guarantee you total anonymity since we have no way of knowing if these companies deliver or not the services promised, we just have to trust them that they have user privacy in mind, which i highly doubt.
If you are involved in something shady and slim then even a vpn won't hide you, the popo can get a canary warrant and monitor your activity while using the vpn and the provider is not in any way shape or form obligated to inform you.
So you see the problem.
There's no absolute way of knowing these companies have your complete privacy in mind, because going against the state is something no company does. It's bad for business
Protects you from an ISP and generic surveillance, but it is thin tissue paper to any targeted approach, like from law enforcement.
