Is gentoo actually a good os or is it a meme?
>>
>>59269046

it takes hours to 'install' aka compile from source or something ... its a fucking meme

its fun to try when you own 2 x 24 core CPUs
>>
Install gentoo anon.
>>
I use it as my main operating system. Pretty heavy in maintenance, but if you're not bothered by that, it's actually pretty good. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone that's new to Linux-based operating systems though.
>>
>>59269083
Do you have a donut for a processor? It doesn't take hours to compile a package.
>>
>>59269046

It's a meme for all people who ask for tech support.
>>
>yfw gentoo is no longer a meme and soon we'll just compile all packages on demand?
>>
>>59269107
Try compile Qt and webkits. See you in 4 hours. Some browsers also take ages to compile. That's why they offer binary alternatives.
>>
>>59269148
Exactly – most packages can compile in a reasonable amount of time, and if not, binaries of the package are offered.
>>
>>59269092
>I wouldn't recommend it to anyone that's new to Linux-based operating systems though.
Gentoo is an ideal learning OS for beginners.
Experts tend to switch to Fedora, Debian or Ubuntu later.
>>
>>59269186
Learning, sure. Maybe in a VM. Definitely not for everyday use though.
>>
>>59269198
You learn much more effectively with Gentoo as your main OS.
It's what I did for a few years before I switched to Ubuntu.
>>
>>59269148
Why would you install qt or webkit if you aren't retarded? Gentoo users don't install that fucking garbage on their systems you stupid fucking cuck.
>>
>>59269206
Yeah. You learn. But you DO understand that people use computers for things other than fucking around with Linux, right? They need to be productive.
>>
>>59269083

It doesn't take hours to install. You literally just extract a tarball, install kernel sources and compile them, install a bootloader, configure a few things like locale, install a cron daemon and syslogger, and you are done.

It probably only takes like an hour, if that.

>>59269186

Except the people who are in charge of CoreOS and ChromeOS-- you know, the operating systems that are based on portage? Those people at Google never used Gentoo, right? Docker and CoreOS are memes, right?
>>
>>59269763
>An hour
No son, you need more than an hour to get it functional than making it boot and dropping you to a tty.

>That fucking /reddit/ spacing
You're not typing fuck long paragraphs, gtfo of here and go back to your safe space.
>>
Portage is love
>>
>>59269837

> get it functional than making it boot

What the fuck are you even trying to say?
>>
Remember when it literally took days to install gentoo cause you had to manually bootstrap the system?
>>
>>59269046
Install Gentoo
>>
I will buy ryzen only for this and casual gaming. Good times ahead with -j16 an --jobs=6. Will probably not even take 4 hours to get everything to recompile on that beast. Apart from webengines of course.

A WILD ELECTRON PACKAGE UPDATE APPEARS
>>
>>59270267
Not the anon you replied to but the kernel is not the problem, shit like Chromium, Firefox, libreoffice and some other programs are.
On a Xeon 1241v3 (basically a 4770k) compiling a minimal kernel with all the needed modules takes around 3 minutes, Chromium around 90 minutes.

Yes, Gentoo is very progressive distribution. They even changed the official mascot to gender confused cow to celebrate their open love to diversity
>>
>>59269046
>implying mutual exclusivity
>>
>>59269046
Of course it's not a meme. It's one of the most widely used distros after the big ones (Debian, *buntu, Fedora/RedHat, SUSE).
>>
>>59269046
Only if you like compiling everything from source.
>>
>>59269107
Took days to install firefox and gcc on my t60
>>
>>59271399
So install the binary.

>>

>more than an hour
nigga wat?
you boot the livecd, partition, extract stage3, emerge sync, compile kernel, install grub, reboot

boom, you just booted your gentoo install and dropped into a tty
>>
>>59271313
no it's not lol, it's ranked 43rd on distrowatch after shit like Geck and RemixOS
>>
>>59272067
not him but he is saying that just having the tty and no sound/wifi/x server/wm/de/etc. should not be considered finishing the install. Still more shit to do. however all the shit i just listed only takes like maybe 45 minutes so idk why he's freaking out

Shit I can't shilling install Gentoo any longer.
>>
>>59272182

Not exactly sure what you're trying to say here... Are you asking for a source?

> When we download packages for use in Chromium OS, we only download packages that are present on the upstream gentoo mirror or on our localmirror. If your package is not present on either download mirror, then you need to upload it manually to localmirror.

Their rankings are literally based on clicks on their website. Not on real world usage. Distrowatch rankings are worthless.

it's a meme
