I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called "Linux", and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called "Linux" distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.

Yes for the most part.

A regular laptop with SSD and maybe a snap on cover will make it just as durable. Rugged laptops are for companies where employers abuse equipment because it's not theirs.

>Is "specialized equipment" a meme?

If you need it, no. If you don't need it, yes.

Now fuck off with your stupid bullshit. I fucking hate this board and how everyone just types like they're on /v/.

How many people on /g/ do you think have worked in environments that warrant those kind of laptops?

I work in construction as contractor doing pipefitting. I can tell you that on a quite a few new welds, they get heat treated. They basically wrap it with electrodes and insulation and cook it 600+ degrees. I've seen the contractors who do this, and their laptops they use for it.

For what it's worth, I've seen on more than one occasion I've seen two fall from about 20 feet. One worked, and the other didn't.

I'd say yes.

This.
If you need it they are useful, if not they are a meme. And a heavy bulky one at that. If you are not sure if you need it then you probably don't.
>>
>>59263994
Your life is a meme.

What broke on the second one?

I'd kind of like to grab an old (like P4/M-C2D) ruggedized laptop and kit out even though I'd never need it, I just like the idea of an "apocalypse-ready" system that could handle decently rough handling, but nothing too drastic like that.
