It's not really a "grow out of windows" rather a "grow into Ganoo/Linux".

I still use WinXP for Windows-only applications (usually some specific cad thing for uni) because wine is a bitch most of the time. However, I have settled in on Ubuntu.

But, to answer your question, 15 is when I started using Linux-based operating systems.
>>
>>59261499
depends, used debian full time from 14 - 16 went dual boot windows/debian 17 - 19, ran one windows, one linux machine 20 - 23, now at 24 back to windows and only linux vm's
>>
>>59261499
Never since I'm not an autistic neckbeard. I just dual boot.
>>
windows until I was 14
debian 14-15
windows 15-17
gentoo on pc and freebsd on server 17-19
windows 19-20 (now- once I get through my games backlog and build a new pc I'll primarily use linux again)

I actually thought Windows 3.1 was decent. I was skeptical when I read magazine reviews of Windows 95 and before that I had already started experimenting with Linux, dual-booting. It wasn't until Windows 95 came out that I said NOPE and never went back.
>>
Windows/OSX till around 9
CentOS and Debian/Ubuntu until 12
Arch or Debian on PC, FreeBSD or centOS for servers at around 14-15
Looped back around to dual booting win7 for gayming :(

your point?

>>59262239
Chess and checkers are not video games
>>

Video games are a form of entertainment and of art.

There are shitty games, yes. There are boring games, yes. But there are a rare few games that are artistic and entertaining.

And enjoying entertaining or artistic things doesn't make you a dumb person. It makes you normal.

day 1 with linux: install via usb, cant connect to wireless network, have to use other pc to download necessary files. os randomly freezes. research for solution. brick the os after a bad sudo command. reinstall from usb.

day 2 with linux: create a restore point for the system. narrow down os freezing to likely nvidia graphics driver. purge previous version, get new version, problem still occurs.

day 3 with linux: updating kernel to latest version because of nvidia graphics driver conflicts. missing required dependencies. cant connect to repo with dependencies. pgp key errors. system freezes while researching solution. unplug the computer.

day 4 with linux: install windows, it automatically installs the nvidia drivers. doesnt crash. comfy ui. disable and uninstall spyware. actually happy with windows 10.

fuck me, right?
32 years old, still cant get linux to fucking work. write software for a living.
>>
>>59262333
Case 1:
>Install Windows 7
>Installation takes 30-45 minutes
>Reboot several times
>Gets desktop ready for first use
>Takes 10 more minutes
>Reboot
>Realize WiFI doesn't work
>Decide to download the wifi driver with my Linux machine
>Realize windows doesn't even have drivers for ext4 or anything but FAT or NTFS

Case 2:
>Decide to install windows 10
>Installation takes more than one whole hour this time
>Boot into windows 10
>Realize two finger scroll is not working
>Realize the touchpad stopped working
>Realize the start menu and search in the bottom panel does not work
>Thanks to touch screen laptop, I manage to install drivers for touchpad
>Driver installation leads me to reboot
>"Getting windows ready"
>30 minutes in
>"Getting windows ready"
>"Don't turn off your computer"
I decided to trash wincrap. It's a FUCKING PIECE OF SHIT and it doesn't belong outside VM

>Laptop has no OS
>Decide to install my favourite comfy OS
>It's Xubuntu LTS 16.04
>It has a LIVE environment so I can check if my hardware is compatible ootb
>Just works
>Touch screen just works and so does touchpad and wifi
>Install
>Browse 4chan during install
>Install takes 10 minutes
>Reboot
>A fully customizable, fast, responsive OS ready for me THAT JUST WORKS

I'm sorry windows is bullcrap. It doesn't have Live ISO, can NOT rank update mirrors, update takes 4-5 hours, upgrade breaks and it doesn't work, even though people pay for it.

My perception of windows is that it is still alive in desktops because of
1. computer illiterate people that does not know any other OS than windows and any other browsers than Internet Explorer
2. Availability of pirated paid software.

Android will kill windows anyways because it's easier to use. Microsoft is trying hard with the surfacebook pros but honestly it doesn't compete with tablets.

For gaming I'll lay down a hard to accept fact:
People that lost virginity use PS4 and move on with their life.
>>
>>59262319
I am not arguing whether chess is millennial or not. Just that is a game that can be played in a computer hence it can also be a video game by definition.
But you also call it a virtual version of chess if you feel uncomfortable calling it that

when I graduated and went from poor to really fucking poor
>>
Who here /uses Linux on a laptop and windows on a desktop for gaming/
>>
>>59261499
I started using Linux when I was about 21 or so, but I'd never really liked Windows to begin with; it's just what I used because it was there and I didn't have any other options. (Aside from sticking with DOS, but that's not a realistic option. Or buying a Mac, but I was A) too poor, and B) too entrenched in the 'I use PC so Mac is the devil' mindset.)
>>
I never grew out of Windows.. Can someone please explain to me what is so good about Linux/Ubuntu?

>>59262342
Those of us with decent hardware don't experience crashes, randomly long wait times on installation or any of that.. There is absolutely 0 reason to go to Linux.

You really think Windows users are still using IE Or Microsoft Edge? Because we're not.

I'm always reading about people having to decrapify and debotnet (although this is impossible) their Windows installations.
>>
>>59262683
You have to wait for an hour or two to install drivers and driver managers.
>>
>>59262693

It's actually pretty easy though, just a little time consuming. You just visit your motherboard's website, download 3-4 driver setup files, click "Next" a bunch of times, and you're done.

depends on what type of gamer you are. growing up, I was very obsessive, getting into mmos. I then found out pking on mmos, which led me to getting stupidly competitive, eventually getting into fps games like cs, halo 3, cod. staying competitive, later got into rts's like sc2, halo wars, dota 2 and eventually culminating at league. wasted lot of time trying to chase high ladders and shit.

anyway realizing it sounds like a blogpost, if someone is like this currently, gotta straighten out their life/time asap. it can rly consume you, luckily I got out 'young' at 22. now I stick to playing quality single player campaigns, BoTW looks great.
