Gonna pull the trigger on either a COCKtail Time or Alpinist.

I like the Cocktail a little more, but I feel like I'd get less use out of it. Looks very dressy.
Thoughts?

Can someone legitimately explain the difference between a fossil and lets say a sarb033 which you guys like? What are the actual stand out differences?

>>59255296

>>59255374

But I regularly wear my vintage Accutron, which is part green and has a very different look. I wouldn't imagine the Alpinist being any different.

>>
>>59255602
>How much longer is it running
No idea. It was supposed to be sort of a special SAR* model anyway.
>Alpinist
Until a new Alpinist is announced, but no news of that. It will probably be produced for a few more years. Maybe it'll end up like the SKX007, being produced for twenty years.
>>
>>59255289

>tfw still can't find one of them on sale
>>
>>59255602
Personally I think the Cocktail is bit dizzying with that dial. I prefer cleaner dial if I was to get a dressy watch. One example is Tissot Visodate.
>>
>>59255661
Gotcha, thanks.
So, I'll have time to get the Alpinist.

Anyone with any actual objections to the Cocktail Time? Or even better anyone actually have one?

I think it'd be a nice one to have.
>>
>>59255672

Yeah, there's only been 8 of them on Yahoo! Japan Auctions so far this year:

>How would it look with a button down or a tshirt?
Should be fine.

Given the shiny silver case and dial, it will only look out of place in grungy clothes.

>what's not to like about the Cocktail Time?
It is pretty big. people who buy it without larger wrists sometimes are disappointed.

>why not the Cocktail for a dress watch?
It's pretty ornate. Dress watches are not ornate, they are simple. This watch is made to shine and glimmer, you can catch eyes from across the room. That's not in line with dress watches.

,
Also, in regards to the "investment" talk. If you wanted to try the cocktail time as an investment (bad idea most likely) you'd probably want to pick up all the cocktail time models. I believe there is 3, SARB065, SARB066 and SARB068. Sarb068 there was only 300 made, and they were all designed along with Ishigaki Shinobu.
>>
>>59255775
Also, if anyone is interested in the sarb068, they're going to be hard to get hold of.

You could ask if this guy still has his
http://forums.watchuseek.com/f29/f-s-preowned-seiko-sarb068-limited-edition-203-300-cocktail-time-%24540-3967770.html

There's a couple stores on Y! jp shopping sites that are listing it, but they all say out of stock (在庫切れ)

http://store.shopping.yahoo.co.jp/1more/sarb068.html

So it looks like the watchuseek guy is the only one I can find selling one.

Ah, I understand the difference now. I haven't actually seen it in person, it's not gaudy or anything?

That's like the size of a quarter.

If you don't have a flexible measuring tape, use a string wrapped around your wrist and then measure the string.

It's probably over 7 inches.
>>
>>59256451
18cm I assume? That's a 7.2in wrist (wrist circumferences are typically measured in inches). That's pretty decently big, so shouldn't be any issue with a cocktail time, which is 40mmx13.1mm

You really trust eBay vendors for watches from Japan?

I've only bought vintage on eBay from individuals, not big sellers.

I wouldn't buy a rolex on ebay (or amazon), but for a $300 seiko you're probably fine, and ebay is always in the buyer's court for any dispute.

Fair enough.
I'll look into some eBay sellers, see what reviewers say.

Can a regular joe learn to service a watch? Do any of you do it yourself?

From what I gather, the cost of getting a Seiko or Orient shitter serviced would probably be greater than or equal to the cost of the watch. I also see that parts are hard to get for regular people. Is most servicing just cleaning and oiling or are parts usually needed? Do you just hope you can just buy a replacement movement for $50 on ebay in 5-10 years?

Watches are a hobby of mine! They're pretty fascinating machines and there's a lot of cool history behind different watches, and it's fun to learn about all of them and try to track them down. I almost got shilled into watches. Then I took a long step back. I realized all these things do is tell the time. The value is heavily inflated by an artificially manufactured following. Even with the watches that do more complicated stuff like chrono and perpetual calendar, the level of engineering is babby-tier compared to a lot of other goods like cars and computers. These are pretty simple, mechanical technologies.
>>

>>
>>59261318
Telling time was a really huge step in human history. Not to mention telling it accurately. It's not a trivial thing.

I understand that clocks are a dime a dozen nowadays, but don't be a retard.

And not to be that faggot, but if we ended up not having power for an extended period of time, lasting well made mechanical watches would be grails.
>>
>>59261788
Even in that bleak scenario, mechanical watches still need to be serviced every few years. That doesn't make a distinction between the price of a 100k watch and a "cheap" Seiko, which does the job nearly as well (albeit still overpriced).

>>59261340
Jewelry has its own issues too but compared to watches, jewelry holds value better because of more actual precious materials in the construction. They also have more artistic value. They don't chase two hares with trying to be ornaments as well as instruments. It's just art. With watches, it's really "well engineered" (not really).

I have to agree with you there, even if I had the means I don't think I'd bother with anything like that.
Personally, I value the engineering, which no matter what you say is extremely impressive. And there is a difference in the engineering between a Seiko and something worth 100k that isn't all fashion.
But the only watch I see myself spending over 10k on is an RGM if they actually pull off a legit all American movement.

Depends. Are you Seiko designing a tri-synchro regulator to generate power from mechanical movement, use that to operate a quartz crystal for timing and then apply an electromagnetic braking force to the geartrain to create a smooth unwinding of the mainspring that tries to correctly show the passage of time, or are you just a company redesigning the looks of bridges for a unique look on an established movement design like 6497?

Are you in a department in Honda, utilizing the already developed honda asset to design a small car with minimal technology for emerging markets? Or are you on Honda's F1 team, pushing the very limits of what can be done within the rules and regulations of Formula 1 racing?

At the end of the day, some companies are taking part of their effort to try and achieve what was once believed to be unbelievable. If you can not appreciate the notion of engineering accomplishments, and simply want to say "well, the complexity derived from the sum of all parts is the only thing that matters" why would anyone talk about a fucking car when the international space station or datacenters exist?

true true, also automatics are generally not the best choice for women. However I just can't find any decent women watches that don't look like rapper bling
>>
>>59263012
39.5mmx12mm (especially the 12) is large for contemporary womens watch fashion. If you have smaller wrists, it will stand out. Consider trying on a way h of similar dimensions (for example, a lot of fossil automatics have similar dimensions and are easier to find than an alpinist). The color and styling should work as long as the size is right. Bracelets are more common for women's watches these days but the alpinist goes best with a strap so consider that as well.
>>
>>59263062
Orient makes decent women's watches he's with decent movements. Citizen ecodrive also has some good options. In the vintage space, Tudor princess is a great choice and is pretty affordable.
>>
>>59263106
Also, at the risk of baiting the entire thread, consider swatch.
>>
>>59263062
I've only bought a watch for one woman, and I asked her if she would prefer automatic or quartz.

She choose automatic, then I asked if she wanted gold color, silver color, or two tone. Matching jewerly can be important for women.

Orient makes automatics for women. So that's what I got.

Really fits her well, and while other women are often wearing large dogshit watches, her very small watch really fits her small wrist well. Looks nice on her.

Big watches on women can give the "I'm wearing my boyfriend's watch" look, which can be cute, kind of like her using your dress shirt to sleep in. But it's certainly not elegant.

Look, I understand that you may not appreciate the understated styling of many Grand Seikos, but I'm not sure how you could describe them as actively ugly.

The SBGH001, for example, is pretty close to a pure expression of Seiko's Grammar of Design styling concept straight out of the 1970s, which were the absolute peak of watch aesthetics.

about 75% of the watches posted in these threads are seikos.

don't seikos get a litttttttttttle old?

look, I get the cost:quality ratio. great value.

do you really want a dial that says 'seiko'? it looks cheap. even the GS. 'seiko' right on the dial, like a cheap $2 watch.

Because Daini Seikosha was so good that they single-handedly BTFO'd the entire Swiss watchmaking industry so bad that the Swiss went crying to the government to shut down all Swiss Chronometer Trials because they were so bootyblasted that Daini Seikosha took the top 6 places awarded to mechanical movements with a production caliber competing against the Swiss companies specially built ringers?

Actually the Swiss are still so terrified of Seiko that when they recently created new chronometer trials they specifically wrote the rules to exclude Seiko, knowing that they would once again get their shit pushed in otherwise.

By the way, I finally scored one of these and it's currently being serviced and the dial+movement are getting swapped into the 5206-6061 case I have.

it happened. Seiko btfo swiss watches in their own chronometer competition so hard they shut it down and banned Seiko from ever competing lest superior Asians finally kill the swiss meme once and for all.

fun fact: Grand Seikos are inherently more accurate then swiss chronometers and are tested to more positions/temperatures with stricter standard
