Hey /g/

I'm looking to buy NAS big enough so that I can store all my movies and music (over 200 movies and 2000 music files).

Reason being I want to stream them onto AppleTV using Plex.

Obviously the NAS itself needs to be 1080p and Plex compatible. Any recommendations on which to get and which to avoid?

QNAP is great and reliable but also very expensive.

Build your own and the greatness and reliability will rely on your own effort and understanding.

I don't have the know-how or patience to do so unfortunately. Any particular model you'd recommend though?
>>
>>59253392
Synology all day
>>
>>59253458
Why and which model / size?
>>
>>59253627
Mainly due to its rsync capability, you want your data backed up right? The model is entirely up to you and your needs man, check some out online.

Thanks man.
I guess I'm just trying to get an idea of what sort of capacity to aim for and everyone else's experiences with NAS

Avoid their atom models at all costs!

They self-destruct by design, because intel wants you to upgrade to c3000.

Cunning.
Capacity and model recommendations..? Leaning towards QNAP but not sure which yet.

Personally i have a very early DS415+, and i feel pretty bad that my data is in this timebomb.

I got a few raspis to get my most important things (dns and vpn) off the machine.

x86 is handy for running containers, so i'd look around for a pentium or older xeon (hp gen8 micro, maybe?) if you also wanna make it do server duties.

If not, get a cheap ARM nas, from qnap or synolomeme, they won't let you down.

buy an mITX mobo with 6 SATA2/3 slots (4 would still work), low-end CPU, 4-8GB RAM, get some NAS HDDs like WD reds and make a storage pool in Server 2012/2016.

Throw apple TV out nearest window, connect proper PC to TV, play files off UNC shares.

Nothing for you to worry about as play series have the ARM, but the Avoton (general purpose server) and Rangeley (switch, routing and comms infrastructure) CPUs were designed to burn themselves out in time for the new architecture release.
The CPUs basically have an MTBF of less than 3 years.

I don't think Cisco is going to let this slide though, and Synology too has been adopting Alpine for their new plus series.

Qnap users should be safe as pentiums are not affected.
>>
I'm using a Qnap TS 453A and it's pretty great. Haven't yet tried Plex since Kodi does everything I need but it should be powerful enough for 1080p. Ask on their forum to be sure. Qnap has dedicated HDMI ports which I prefer over Synology and you can upgrade your RAM with compatible Kingston RAM without voiding warranty and paying an insane premium for their own RAM.
