I don't know. I've got a dualboot for ideas like free software, privacy and control over my OS, but then I do almost all of my work in Windows, including Java (although Java can be used anywhere equally).

I do see myself doing anything C in Linux. Windows is too confusing to deal with because of all the shit you need to do just to print out "Hello World".

The standard CMD and even PowerShell, and the set of utilities they package for them, are annoying and not as easy and strong as UNIX/Linux coreutils.

I do like the ideas with objects as opposed to strings but in practice it just ends up being annoying to do the same tasks.

The bash subsystem stuff on Windows 10 is neat and handy though. I just kind of wish it was incorporated into the system more directly.
Having to use third party patches and applications like conemu to work around Windows' systemwide TTY limitations is also annoying.

Linux, and UNIX-based OS's are just generally a lot more comfortable for software development than Windows in my opinion. It's why you see a lot of webdevs use Macbooks; because they're like baby-linux. Trendy, but still has bash.

Once you've developed on windows for any sizable amount of time and moved to linux, it's honestly hard going back.

I work in the dock unloading merchandise. Im part of the backbone of the economy. If all dock workers like me disappeared, we'd go straight back to before boats were invented. If all network connecting monkeys like you disappeared, Stacy would have to go without updating facebook. I just have to clock in and out on the cashier, and I know they're running some form of Windows because the windows logo is displayed when they're booting up.

Most companies that don't need their computers for some special snowflake application that's so niche even Windows doesn't support it use Linux because it's more customizable. The other 90% of companies use Windows.

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called "Linux", and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called "Linux" distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.
