It's a sign that your HDD is failing, yes.
Sadly, what you can do it is using a bootable USB key in the meanwhile with a light distro... that's all I can tell you, sorry mate.

People just straight up don't know how to use computers. This is why tablets and Chromebooks are winning.

Aw anon, come on, it happens to the best of us.
Fun fact, I grilled a HDD during a Linux installation couple weeks ago..

If that can put a smile on you, I was doing data recovery for a friend with his Laptop, he had a cheap laptop but with a nice i5 but whatever. It had Windows. I'm fairly competent with Windows and all but my friend saw me using my Linux distros for a while and he wanted it on his lappy.

The lappy had a problem with the power cord and the battery, it kept rebooting all the time when I was doing data recovery but Windows has their "sleep" mode thingy on Laptop that snaps some of the files. (Not doing a course, you get the idea)

So not a big deal, right? After each boot up the laptop was doing his things like nothing happened.

After that all the data was recovered, I was on my way to install the glorious Debian and then... the laptop went down once again.

Guess what, the drive died there.
I was like, uh-oh. Are you for real.
I bet when it was writing and the laptop died, it wrote at the wrong place and scratched it.

Luckily I had some good spares and installed Windows instead. Told him to get a new battery before going back to Debian.

2 weeks pass, did the thing and he seems happy with his new Debian install.

Stuff just happens, anon.

Well, new disk doest cost a quarter of your salary in usa...

check smart values with smartctl on linux eg:sysresccd

Your hard drive is completely fine, you just are ensnared in the botnet.

I work IT and have seen this issue at least 100 times by now, its fucking weird. Its always caused by some different microsoft process for god knows why. Either BITS or SuperFetch or Windows Search or whatever the fuck else.

For short term potentially crippling (if Windows Search) fix try disabling those services and see if it stops happening.
>>
>>59247089
How does this even happen
>>
>>59247305
Yep, disable cortana too.

A HDD is like a day of work here.
Are the US so bad at the moment?

>>59247305
What the fuck? Stop preaching that kind of non-sense. I'm a SysAdmin, those kind of drives are DEAD. He dropped it, it's a frikin' netnook. Don't try to see outside of the box, hell I think I fell for a troll at this point.

>>59247347
He dropped it.
>>
>>59246881
could be but it could also be a windows 10 feature.
>>
>>59247452
I didnt drop. I smashed my laptop in rage a couple of times when i was playing league of legend and had connect issues. I think that was the reason the hdd broke.
>>
I had this happen several times with my SSD half a year ago, but then it went away and I haven't had any problems since. No idea what the problem was.
>>
>>59246881
install gentoo

Not the guy you replied to, but he's right same shit is happening to me to. Out of nowhere Windows telemetry turns on or some other stupid shit and it chokes your HDD to 100%. After you disable it in task manager everything goes to normal. Windows is just a fucking botnet.

Both provide the same effect, autist

MacBook doesn't have this problem
>>

The SSD that came with my laptop did the same thing all the time after about a month. Contacted Dell, got a replacement SSD delivered next day.

It's clearly fucked, anon.
>>
>>59246881
Hardware is fine. The problem is you are running Windows 10 post-AU on HDD, not SSD.

Welcome to modern windows, bitch.
>>
>>59246881
Show us the process tab so we can see if some process is hogging it.

I have Windows 10 running on my old laptop with a dying drive. The HDD will occasionally hang, where Windows will report 100% disk utilization with 0kb/s read/write & 0ms of ping, similar to your screenshot. The drive will often hang for 30-60 seconds before coming back to life again, acting almost as if nothing ever happened. This will keep occurring maybe once every 2-20 minutes depending on disk usage. Listen for any clicking sounds from the HDD. If you hear clicking, even if it's only occasionally, it's probably not happy.

I don't use that laptop much so it doesn't worry me. I have a 1TB WD Blue drive I'll use to replace it at some point.

Looks like after Windows finished installing all that stuff it needs everything seems fine now. But still there is some hogging once in a while when I copying from archive or installing a program.
