IDEs vs extensible text editors (vim, emacs)

Depends on how long-running your project is.
If I'm paid to work on a project for just 4 weeks, I'm going the fastest possible way to get started.
I use sublime mode on cloud9.io
Mostly vim...but some vs studio, vs code also. So im for both types

try to program in a shitty java project with a million classes without a proper ide
>working without IntelliSense
disgusting

I use VS commuity with vim plugin for C++ and C# as it's a hassle to set up the right tools and VS has a godly debugger. I cant imagine programming on large C-family projects with a text editor.
For haskell and python I just use vim with some cool plugins and backgrounds. I am curious about emacs but I dont see any benefits over vim.
For scheme I use drracket.
In general though there is no silver bullet, it all depends on the community and the tools they release.

the website looks pretty polished. Why did you decide to develop on the cloud? What are the benefits?

IDE's for large scale or long running projects, projects where multiple people work on the code, or projects that are done in any office setting.
Extensible editors are literally for hobbyists. Im not saying an employer would fire you because your not being productive, but odds are you're only using vim or emacs for meme value. Professionals get work done quickly and efficiently and then grind/refactor later on.

eh, if you're not dependant on some magical toolchain box simply splitting up most small-medium projects into managable sized things isn't too bad for any text editor. Vi just happens to be the best raw text editor, extensions or not.

I can agree with you there. I just believe it's all in the title for a big project professional.

It's an entire environment designed to help you develop, manage, test and export your projects. I feel for the most part, they do their job and they do it well especially on big project or projects where multiple people(as in at least 5 or so) work on.
