I thought the ad meme on Windows 10 was a circlejerk with photoshopped images.

That was when I had a Windows 10 Pro N license (N = doesn't ship with windows media player in europe).

Then I bought a new computer and a Windows 10 Pro regular license.

It had fucking 15 preinstalled apps and ads in the start menu. And after removing them, Windows needed to update (not a feature update, just a cumulative one) and there were 10 new ad bullshits that needed to be uninstalled.

Insane that I paid 200 bucks for the license. I would expect the ads if the license had costed me 20 bucks from official retailer store but nope

>>
>>59233438

i doubt that it has anything to do with the Pro N version. I upgraded from win7 to win8 and win10 dev version or whatever, and i never see any ads either.
They might have an actual algorithm to keep techies and early adopters away from the ads so that there wont be too many early reports of this from influental people, shitting on windows.
Obviously the algorithm isnt perfect because when you buy a new machine, you get a new license - with ads.

why show an ad for more space.. i mean maybe they make money off people who think they ought to buy more space as a precaution

Checkeroonied

It makes sense from a business point of view: given the choice a biz prefers small amounts paid regularly over a lifecycle than one amount at the very beginning. You can already see where this leads with office 365.

It makes no sense at all from a tech or a user point of view- it can only detract from the user's productivity.

Ubuntu unity lens and dashboard ads require editing config files. If you remove unity-webapps-common you can't use tweak tool. if you try to finger the global menu for autohide, you can brick the distro. if you try to use transparency out of default color scheme, your status icons don't get the gtk3 theme and you see black boxes around them.

it is a complete fucking mess. the sad part is that ubuntu is the best linux distro among the rest so you can imagine how bad the others are.

I cant seem to find any screenshots and I dont feel like triggering a unrecognized device login event for the security guy to see, but they started doing this kind of thing in enterprise shit, too.

It was pretty innocent at first with just the banner in pic attached, but recently they started inserting the advertisements when you use the new-distributiongroup powershell cmdlet ("NEW! Try Office365 groups, the best way to share messages and documents" appears in the console along with the success message) and now when you.

Also now in the GUI, when you click the 'new distribution group' it will take you to 'new group' instead and you have to find the 'new distribution group' at the bottom of that interface. The two interfaces are almost identical except for the single word in the title, but the two types of objects do not behave the same way for the users.

>Most STEM professionals use expensive custom software that is Windows exclusive for their work.

Speak for yourself... I've been in STEM myself (master's in comp. eng.) and hasn't been true for years. There may be quite a few niche applications that are Windows exclusive, but most of the big cross-field software like Matlab and AutoCAD have been cross platform for years. Hell, when it comes to heavy computing apps it's more common for the applications to be exclusive to Linux than Windows.

In my field I've personally had no issues whatsoever running Linux as pretty much all the software I've needed to use has been on it.
>>
>>59238046

what makes you think that i am forcing anyone to use any OS at all? didn't you read what I just said? I don't give two shits about what OS you use I just said that Ubuntu worked fine for me.
>>
>>59235944

Should the OS do what the user wants it to do, or what its manufacturer wants it to do?

Ultimately you have to answer: who does your machine answer to?
>>
>>59238066
Well memed. How can you utilize power new GPU to run calculations if Linux does not have any drivers? The latest 10 series of Nvidia GPU don't even have Linux drivers. Intel iGPU does not even have a config utility to adjust 3D, vsync and anti-aliasing settings.

Even if the applications are cross platform it is useless because juicy expensive hardware is under utilized by running Linux instead of Windows.
>>
>>59238046
Ok... You do understand that all the guy only said that he hadn't encountered issues like yours?

I also switched to Ubuntu when my mac laptop simply wouldn't cut the mustard when doing GPGPU work and I haven't had any major issues either.

No matter how well an OS has been made, if it ever gets a large audience, someone will have a bad time with it.

The thing you're responding true is definitely true if people who actually know about computers aren't included in the meetings when the sales guy is at your company/university trying to sell their bullshit.

Of course the sales guy isn't going to tell a researcher who is probably great at using tools but doesn't care to much about the infrastructure that his app requires java v3 on a windows 2000 server and must be in the DMZ to work cuz firewalls are hard and that the company he works for hasn't employed an actual developer since version 1.0 of the product was released a decade ago (and the version he's selling is also 1.0).

So what's going to happen is that this guy is going to make a sale with his cool demo and powerpoints and then that department is going to come to IT asking them to implement and wonder why IT is suddenly demanding all this money for the supporting infrastructure. "But of course we didn't consult with you earlier, you would have said no." And then everyone is surprised when the department gets outsourced to some indian company for $30M less than they were paying for their inhouse guys.

Ubuntu is the pinnacle of a Linux distribution and it fails to even match the utility of Windows 95 in terms of basic things like screen tearing, thumbnails, USB formatting, handling ISO files and recognizing partitions properly. I have two USB and external drives that Linux cannot read/write and throws errors at me. Meanwhile plugging them to Windows, they run just fine.

Did I mention the fucking wifi disconnects every 5 minutes? When you restart the wifi device disappears completely. Bluetooth device is unrecognized regardless of kernel version.

You can't simple gloss over these deficiencies and bugs which are around since 12.04 when I first tested Ubuntu.
>>
>>59238101
Nvidia's had very good Linux drivers for years already. Hell, their proprietary linux drivers are derived from the same codebase their Windows drivers. When I moved my GPGPU code back and forth between Linux and Windows (as I was writing that software for a researcher at another organisation that didn't allow him to even run Linux) it ran completely fault-free with exactly the same level of performance.

AMD, despite having rather lackluster Linux drivers when it comes to gaming (thou they've made some massive strides over the last couple of years), have have kept the compute side of their Linux drivers in very good side.

So if you're going to be misinformed, go do that on /v/ because there you'll fit right in with the console kiddies.

Windows 10 is a joke. Microsoft prior to Windows 8 was very successful and loved by the power users.

>screen tearing
It's an absolutely tiny fix (something like 5 seconds)

> thumbnails
Oh great, that meme picture again

>USB formatting
Never had any problems formatting USB thumb drives and HDDs so this must be PEBKAC

>handling ISO files
Never had any issues with this either so it must be PEBKAC again

>recognizing partitions properly
See above

The fact that you've got some PEBKAC issues is hardly a strike against an OS that would be getting some pretty serious issues if these were actual bugs in the OS and not some autist who can't even use Ubuntu properly.

lol
In my experience (geophysics) it's mostly MacBook Pros and either unix or linux workstations/servers/clusters/whatever.
>>
>>59238179
As someone who uses them on my every day machine and has been doing so for years, yes they work pretty well. Performance in CUDA, OpenCL and OpenGL is also pretty much identical with windows (as it should seeing how they're both derived from the same codebase).

You're so close to realizing where the problem lies.
So close.

>>

all this ad-shit might be remotely acceptable for the people who got the upgrade from win7/8 for free, but what about those who got win10 with a new machine and effectively paid for it?

They get the freemium-treatment although they handed over hard cash.

disgusting

There if you use the out-of-the-box software renderer, laggy as hell.

There were no thumbnails and furthermore, there was no image viewer till XP: before that, all images could be viewed through Paint or IE.

You think Windows 95 supported USB? Underage alert.

Not even going to comment on that.

A checkbox is far too scary for a Linux user, he needs at least 2 minutes worth of shit to type in a command line to toggle something off or else his fragile ego gets hurt.

Sync Provider is OneDrive, as it is the service PROVIDER to SYNC to the cloud.

1. install Education or LTSB
2. run: gpedit.msc
3. spend an hour there disabling everything
>>
>>59238667
Takes me less than a minute. Try educating yourself.
>>
>>59238679
Maybe if you memorized all the settings and practiced switching them 20 times already.

But if you've never done this before it will take you half an hour minimum, because some of the settings are completely un-intuitive (maybe on purpose) and placed in random categories.
>>
>>59238679
No, it literally takes more than an hour. I tried making a customised iso and I was always finding more crap that had to be disabled on a daily basis and redo it again due to newly discovered policies. There are tesns (I mean close to a hundred) policies that have to be configured to make it somwhat usable. Even knowing where they are, all of them, which would be impossible, it would still take you a good quarter to a half an hour.
>>
>>59238750
Sounds like Linux. A new user might spend all day trying to figure out how to do something simple like installing a GPU driver. What do you mean I have to use a command line to install a driver from an RPM? What do you mean I have configure xorg line by line? What the fuck? I followed that two-week-old 50-step guide and I'm only getting 5 fps in Tux Racer?

>They receive a huge backlash to the point people start using other distros or derivatives that dosen't ship bullshit.
>At the end canonical disables it by default as it should have been from the start.

>Microsoft does something nasty.
>Their users keep using it regardless of what MS pushes into their throats.
>Their reason to defend MS is that they are dependent on a piece of software available only for windows. So their prefer to shut up the criticism instead of stopping using windows and demanding the software providers to support alternative platforms.
>Due to enough people not caring, not knowing or actively rewarding MS's lock-in tactics, MS doesn't learn anything and they feel they can push anything on their users.
>Windows users receives more bullshit and repeats the cycle while calling names other OS users to convince themselves they're doing the correct or the only viable thing.

Am i wrong in any way?
>>
>>59238845
LTSB is what you want, not CBB Enterprise which is a pos.
>>
>>59238904
The problem is catch 22. You need software developers to make Linux desktop an attractive thing to users, but you need users to make Linux desktop and attractive thing for developers.

It's on the developers to take a risk and start the cycle, some have already started.
>>
>>59238958
True, it's a vicious circle. I think both users and developers has similar weight in this matter. A lot of people has made a conscious judgment on what is better for them and to not take bullshit from microsoft and they're pushing developers to consider linux too because windows is slowly becoming a walled garden. I can say this because except for chromeOS and android, linux on the desktop is mostly an opt-in. 2% may look like a very small number but it's in fact 1 of each 50 detected desktop users, it's in fact a pretty big number.
