why are normies using this discord thingy? it's like everyone decided overnight to use discord.

can't they just use free software? does it really always need to be proprietary malware?
>>
Discord gave people what they wanted:
Gratis software to chat with their friends (voice and text) in superior audio quality compared to Skype without the need to setup or rent a server. It even has meme friendly features and chat commands. It became the 'app' the cool kids use.
>>
>Why are they using things that just werks instead of spending time issuing open sores?
>>
Discord is the Overwatch of VOIP programs. Keeps normies/retards at bay, so all you have to do to not deal with them is use a superior program.

Normies have shit taste in everything.

The most successful movies, or flicks as I like to call them, are all complete horse shit

The most successful songs are all complete horse shit.

The most successful desktop OS is complete horse shit.

https://support.discordapp.com/hc/en-us/articles/210544537-How-is-Discord-making-money-How-can-I-contribute-

Would this mean they are a startup meme operating in the "initial" "operating at a loss while building our userbase" phase?
>>
>>59233193
I say let them use it. Let them find alternatives, if ever they need to.
>>
>>59233193
People started using Discord late 2014 in closed beta and middle 2015 when it was released.
When something so simple comes along and provides almost everything people want its userbase is going to snowball and eventually everyone seems to use it.
>>
>>59233410

Pretty sure not everyone uses Discord.

Depends on the gentre. If you are talking about fast FPS then I would say any Quake, Reflex, Unreal Tournament, Doom.

There is a new Doom that came out in 2016 you know? And it runs very well using Wine and Vulkan.
There is also a new Unreal Tournament that is currently at alpha or beta stage

So every /v/ approved FPS?
It's time to move on. I loved those games too, but good things come out every year.

It's almost like they were designed to entertain without challenging anyones comfort zone. Anything groundbreaking generally speaking won't appeal to the masses. I also like that you're trying to equate a utility like communication software to entertainment.
>>59233347
Also this.

I used to play Quake and UT a lot. The new DOOM was super fun. Overwatch just has a lower skill floor, allowing for more people to have fun but the skill ceiling is higher than those games.

People are using Discord to get away from Skype.
I think users are safer on Discord than on Skype. Plus Discord users have the option of using Better Discord which is open sauced.

Let me save you the trouble:

/g/ is filled with nerds who go out of their way to be contrarian, because they're insecure about liking stuff normies like. If they accepted the fact that deep down they were normies too, they'd have to come to terms with being people of average intelligence, looks, and means; an outcome that makes the rest of their life a whole lot bleaker.

Skip the cognitive dissonance. Play games for fun (as opposed to e-reputation or 'clearing a backlog'). Use what just werks 'instead of whatever a NEET with a used 768p Thinkpad with a tiled WM in Linux says everyone should use. Remember that technology exists to make your life more enjoyable, not provide yet another arena for you to measure your dick in.

>>
I'm really fucking sad about this, actually.

I'm active in certain hobbyist circles (which are far from normie, but not /g/) and it used to be all about IRC.
Now our biggest online community is on Discord.

I sometimes try to raise some discussion about this - I don't go full Stallman, I just say that isn't it kinda suspicious that there's this non-free thing and they host everything for us for no cost (I can say "non-free" instead of "closed" because we don't talk English and our native language has completely different words for free of cost and freedom). They keep all the logs and shit, even we can browse them.

Better Discord is slightly better I suppose, but not good enough.

>>59235456
>Remember that technology exists to make your life more enjoyable, not provide yet another arena for you to measure your dick in.
>valuing ethics and freedom = dick measuring
It is a political issue, not very different from boycotting a certain company or fucking being vegetarian (which can be dick measuring, sure - but isn't all about it).
And, of course, video game elitism is unlikely to be about this.
>>
>>59233390

yes

they are running on VC money until they have a huge userbase and a database of chat data going back years that they can rent out to advertisers so they can do targeted ads.

People don't care about their data being sold, they care even less about it being centralized/non-free.

Our data from this shithole gets sold and we don't even complain.
>>
>>59235982
It isn't that hard to use this shithole without giving out much of anything.

But yeah, and it is very discomforting. Makes one realize that the future will only get worse, it'll only get harder and harder to avoid using non-free software, "the cloud", etc.

Makes me miss the days when I still did all my chatting on a tiny IRC server hosted in the home of an IRL friend.
>>
>>59235793
>It is a political issue, not very different from boycotting a certain company or fucking being vegetarian (which can be dick measuring, sure - but isn't all about it).

Two points:

1. There is no ethical consumption in capitalism. The idea of personal boycotts exist to project the faults of massive institutions and the systems they enable onto individuals.

2. FOSS is good, and there's nothing wrong with shilling for FOSS, but the FOSS alternative is only occasionally as good.
>>
>>59233431
Normie get out reee :)
>>
>>59236126
Well if you want to post you have to bend over for google or sell yourself via a pass, neither is anonymous.

Unless people are educated early on then there's no chance they'll ever care. Furthermore most will still chose the convenience that centralized/non-free software offers. If irc/xmpp were more developed things may have been different.
>>
>>59233332
Yes because the most sucessful movies WORLD WIDE are movies that appeal to ALL audiences and ALL cultures. So movies with generally bland story (because lets face it, most "good" story is westernized culture and wouldn't appeal to the other parts of the world).

Avatar is the best example, garbage story, but it's one we all know and can understand. Paired with well done visuals and decent action, BAM, highest grossing movie ever.

>The idea of personal boycotts exist to project the faults of massive institutions and the systems they enable onto individuals.
There's still legitimate personal responsibility involved in which exact companies (or their products/services) you personally support and participate in, as complete isolation is hardly an option. Uber, for example, is an absolutely horrifying company and it is certainly more ethical to use traditional taxis and speak up against Uber (_and_ other companies which do the same shit).
In general, small companies are also better than huge ones, small enough ones may even be mostly unproblematic.

Collective political action must be prioritized, but the revolutionary idea can't be an excuse to avoid personal responsibility or smaller everyday acts or small, "inside capitalism" reforms.

>but the FOSS alternative is only occasionally as good.
Sadly true. Though often it isn't quite as bad as some people say.

>>59236456
20th century state socialism was a failure, doesn't mean that being communist is ridiculous. We must simply learn from the past and change a lot from the old ideas.
I would even insist that radical anti-capitalism is the only way to avoid disaster, but whether it should be called communism or something else - whatever, I insist on communism but doesn't have to be it if a new movement emerges.
>>
>>59236544
>meanwhile in venezuala

>>59236570
>radical anti-capitalism without any system to replace it that hasn't collapsed every time it's been tried
That will surely improve things and not cause famines. Venezuela is a paradise, war is peace, freedom is slavery.
>>
>>59236234
>capitalism is a flexible system that matches the changing needs of the people within it
>communism is a monolithic unchanging entity which requires complete control to achieve a modicum of success

The UI is just too confusing for me, and I don't want to join the rat race of $Newcoolchatprogram again. These days, there are like a gazillion of these:

Whatsapp, Facebook Messenger, Kik, Riot, Wire, Telegram, Skype, AIM still exists even, Snapchat, etc etc

Meanwhile, IRC has been going strong since forever, and I have no intention of quitting it.
