All VHS recordings look like dog shit so it doesn't really matter.

You can use head cleaners and make sure you aren't using cheap tapes.

the only "mod" i can think of is to open it up and really clean the shit out of the heads with some qtips and alcohol

throw it away. Get a Panasonic AG-1970/1980 or a JVC HR-S7x00/S9x00 S-VHS machine. Those will get the last drop of quality from any VCR
