Fell for the meme and bought a refurbished thinkpad x230 from ebay

>they said it was used only with a keyboard and monitor in an office
>I thought, noice
>keyboard was greasy af
>discolorations on each corner
>smelt like alcohol
>monitor flickered
>keyboard's keys felt like shit even after I cleaned it up
>very noisy and battery doesn't last more than 1 hour
>the build quality is nothing special
>the red pirulino is cringeworthy and who designed it must die

Now I'm installing Debian on it and I hope it will perform better, I also cleaned it all up because it was disgustingly greasy and now I can use it without vomiting, but the keys' feeling is everything but what I would call "great", my brother's old Acer Aspire's keyboard was a lot better despite being nothing special.
I think I'll have to stick with it since it costed 230 bucks, but I think /g/'s obsession with these things is really unjustified. Yeah, I was unlucky to find one that wasn't really in good conditions, but as it happened to me it could happen to everyone since they're used laptops and you have no warranty that their conditions will be good (this was even a refurbished one but sucked ass). And even if you found a near-mint one, it's not really anything special, any laptop will be the same or better.

So fuck those chinkpads and most of all fuck me for listening to anons on the internet when I want to buy something.
>>
lol @ old IBM thinkpad. Those ones were the best, I had one in my office ages ago. A lot better than chink Lenovo ones.

lol dude thinkpads are dogshit NEET gear. Whatever advice /g/ gives you, do the opposite. There's a reason 99% of Silicon Valley doesn't use thinkpads.
>>
>>59207407
You're really gunna enjoy it when the internal power connector snaps off because it's held in place by a tiny screw hooked into a plastic connector to the motherboard, and the only fix is hot glue. Feels really "high quality" to be gluing back internals on your laptop.
>>
>>59208030

The shitlet keyboards are actually the best ThinkPad keyboards. You know where your fingers are laying without looking and they're not mushy.

>>59208060

>There's a reason 99% of Silicon Valley doesn't use thinkpads

Silicon Valley employees use whatever they want. Mostly Apple computers though so they can develop for all 3 operating systems and some part for the godly stability of macOS.

Hey don't feel bad. I fell for the x220 is good for hackintosh. Let's just say it's not. The trackpoint is sluggish as shit. When I heard "oh don't worry man the touchpad is shite but the trackpoint just werks" I just didn't expect to have to watch out in case I fucking put just a tiny bit of my palm on top of the touchpad.

Also that I just tried Mint XFCE and scrolling on firefox is so much more smooth than scrolling on anything on macOS Sierra. God fucking dammit. I'm thinking of switching if it weren't for a few applications.
>>
It's just a meme. Everyone here has a Mac for actual work, because macOS is the only one that has proper commercial software support, an interface designed for computers, and a UNIX terminal. But thinkpads are ironic and fun for a while.

Reason why I'd love to buy a Macbook Pro if only I had the money. This shitty Thinkpad was really a bad choice, I needed a cheap laptop so I said "let's try"! but got screwed...

...Lucky thing is: I sent a complaint to ebay literally 30 minutes ago with pics of the laptop and explanation, and just got answered that I have the rights to have all of my money back if I send this shit back to the seller. You can't imagine how fucking happy I am.

Now, what's a decent new laptop (I'm done with refurbished shit) I can get with around 300 bucks? Anything with an i3 and decent build quality is fine for me.

I actually just finished updating from 24 to 25 with wayland and it seems fine.
>>
I've bought two Thinkpads from Ebay and both haven't had any problems. It's your fault for buying from some random cuck instead of a verified refurbisher.
>>
Maybe you should have bought it from a certified professional reseller instead of some random neckbeard, like everyone else here does
>>
>>59208199
Yeah that trackpoint (in my heart it will always be a "pirulino") is uncomfortable and awful as hell, I almost got carpal tunnel by trying to use it.
>>59208200
Well, Linux is a great system if properly used but yeah, a Mac is the best professional laptop since you can have all major OSs on a solidly built and cool machine.

>>59208247
That's the problem man: they're hit and miss. I got through all the info, both here on the generals and on dedicated subleddits, took all the precautions but got screwed anyways with a ruined one (as I said, I'm probably getting my money back luckily, but you can't always rely on that).
>>

I bought an x220 recently and it had no problems at all. you have to look for good refurbishing stores, not random faggots.

$300, new and decent? I'm sorry mate it doesn't exist. That's eBay laptop money only. The first ThinkPad I bought was off eBay (x121e), it turned out to be some office mass recycled junk, it had fucking Fanta spilled on it and it smelled like a weird mix of sugar and dust. It also turned out to be from Malaysia. Really fucked machine so I quickly sent it back.

I then bought what's basically the same machine again this time from a small individual seller in the UK. This thing was basically pristine. Not even any keyboard or palm rest wear. Like its been used for about 4 months then just put back in its box and left in a closet for 4 years.

That was extreme luck though.
>>
>>59208426
>>59208441
It was a certified refurbisher, I got all the info before buying one. You have no warranty about the quality even if they're refurbished, mine was also granted as "quasi-mint, always used with keyboard and monitor only in office" but was bs. Luckily masterrace ebay is giving me my money back this time, but I don't think it's something you can always rely on.

Face it, metal unobodiy > everything else.
>>
>>59208492
Great to hear that
Shitty resellers shouldn't get off with your money like that

I didn't have any issues with my refurbished X200 and X220 at the time, but I guess you need some luck.

Good luck finding something else, OP!
>>
>>59208613

I really don't know, I think of any laptop that isn't a ThinkPad or at the very least a Lattitude to be the same old shit. That's on the Windows side at least.

I'd still rather use an old MacBook which shipped with Snow Leopard which is in great condition over any old ThinkPad. Its all about the actual use of the system. The old MacBook won't have some drivers that never got updates, no old kinks left not ironed out, etc.
>>
>>59208321

Buy a used Toughbook. Even if it's a bit beat up, it will work fine.

Chromebook? That's atom or celeron tier, you won't get a new i3
>>
>>59208663
The only choice for OP is to save up and find a MacBook Air with few battery cycles owned by a university student who used it to check her Instagram.
>>
The problem with this board and with people who are "into" tech in general is that they're all egotistical retards with varying levels of mental illness. If you're even vaguely neurotypical and you get into this shit, any given community is just pure torture. The only solution is to note what they say but to take it with a straight up salt lick.
>>
>>59208663
Well it seems that the more modern i3 on this ASUS is roughly as powerful as the i5 on the x230, and as I will use it mostly with Debian Windows issues are not that relevant.
>>
>>59208613
If thinkpads are not your thing, that's exactly what a friend is grabbing herself.

>>59208663
I was considering grabbing myself an old macbook, but for the price of a T420 decently specced you could only get an abused mbp from 2009 in my country.

Personally, I bought into the Thinkpad meme, and I'm alright with it. But the trackpoint is for people who are way too used to keyboard shortcuts. It pales in comparison with a decent trackpad and it gets actually really tiring to use the fucking thing. As in my index finger actually hurts a little after a while.

It even pales in comparison to the actual trackpad on the same machine sometimes. You can only make quick jerky movements with it. No fine granular movement, you've barely got any control over it and yes, after a few minutes your fingertip will feel funny.

Some people are still selling sealed MacBooks from 2009 and onward if you've got the cash.
>>
>>59208613
that ASUS is the best new laptop you can get for that price. Quite solid with it's metal design and the cheapest i3 laptop.

My main laptop is a MacBook Pro retina 15 mid 2012. Probably the best laptop I've used. I'm getting it refurbished right now so I'm using a mid 2012 non retina 13" that I had lying around. That said, I've had a few thinkpads and they definitely are amazing little laptops. I've got some old thinkpad 7xx's, but the oldest usable one is a T60 which I'm using right now. I'm planning on doing a full refurb on it, and upgrading it as far as I can. It's perfectly fine for web browsing, and with more RAM, SSD, upgraded CPU, and an SXGA+ lcd. The keyboard is goddamn amazing on it.

>carpal tunnel from trackpoint

nigga wut.

the whole point of the layout of a thinkpad is that you keep your fingers on the home row, and you can easily navigate with the trackpoint without moving your hands, and use the upper mouse buttons with your thumbs. the entire damn thing is designed around *reducing* hand/wrist strain from hours of work. if using it is in any way uncomfortable, you need a basic typing class and have shitty form.
>>
>>59208613

"I don't understand RSI."
Have you ever watched your thumb move while using the trackpoint buttons? That might be too advanced a question for you. Not understanding what causes RSI (not exclusively the subject of the question I posed.)
>>
>>59211528
my thumbs rest comfortably on the buttons. i can click with the sides of my thumbs or press space with the tips of them and basically never have to lift them at any point.

maybe it's because i don't have little babby hands?
>>
>>59211571
I was right.
>>
>>59208669
This, also Fujitsu makes good convertibles and they're usually sub-$300 used.

>>59211528
if you are getting wrist strain from the track point, turn the sensitivity up and change your hand position, because you're doing something wrong.
>>
>>59211613
right about what? that YOU don't understand RSI? if that's the case, then you absolutely were right since, ya know, carpal tunnel and RSI are not the same thing. and for REPETITIVE STRESS to happen, there needs to be REPETITIVE movement. 0 movement != repetitive movement.
>>
>>59211678
CAPS CAPS CAPS
0 movement!

I want you to type me a reply with 0 movement. That includes the autistic spasms you seem to be experiencing.
>>
>>59210189
Wait what did they do to the keyboard? Have they managed to make it even worse than the chiclet style?
>>
>>59211732
with 0 thumb movement? sure. just did. still doing it. you know you can press things with your thumbs without actually making movements with the muscles of your thumbs, right?

but hey, what do i know about typing? i've only been doing it for several hours a day, every day, for the last 26 years without RSI or carpal tunnel.
>>
>>59211839
Are you an alcoholic?

Fucking zero thumb movement. How much shit are you willing to lie about to be right? Oh, and I didn't say zero thumb movement. I said zero movement. Not zero sex, you've got that covered already.

Dude. Keeping your fingers on the home row isn't going to save shit. Doing shit top-to-bottom straight through in a terminal still causes repetitive stress. If anything, the rest you get from operating a mouse helps.
>>
>>59211918
you're clearly incapable of comprehending simple english.

i say carpal tunnel, you come out with RSI bullshit (not the same thing), i talk about my thumbs resting comfortably on the mouse buttons and that not having to move them means no repetitive motion thus no repetitive stress, and then you act as if that's not what i was talking about in the first place when i mention 0 thumb movement?

you're just mad that you're wrong. i get it. it's cool. but seriously, you're making yourself look even more idiotic each time you reply with moving goalposts to try to not be wrong. do me a favor and go full faggot and pick a tripcode so i can filter your dumb illiterate ass.
>>
>>59211997
>not having to move them
>no repetitive motion

So how do you press the trackpoint buttons then? Okay, you're a fag and don't move your thumbs. I get it. It's cool. But seriously, you're mad you're making yourself look like an idiot by moving yout whole hand, so you move your wrist, but then you realize that you have to do this more than once, so you stiffen from your elbows to apply pressue. Shit, but then next time you have to move from your shoulders, and soon your body is stiff and you're jumping up and down from a different muscle each time just to use your trackpoint buttons just so you can press "Post" to keep going on about how this whole little friendly reply suckoff isn't even about whether it's "lol RSI" or "lol Carpal Tunnel" but whether or not the Trackpoint will spare you from any serious -repetitive- injury.

It will not. Not allowing your hands to rest or travel under constant use will cause injury.

I'm not rich, but I'm in my 30's and have spent less on ALL my laptops (I've gone through 5) than most of /g/ spends on their single laptop that they "code" with (do homework at college)

i'm not poor because I don't do stupid shit like spend 1200 dollars on something I can get for 200

Mid 2010 for macOS Sierra. Dunno if the latest Xcode will run on anything older.

I don't always buy the latest and greatest, but my MBP 15" which I bought new certainly paid for itself, because I do actually "code" on it and get paid. iOS dev can be lucrative but you gotta have the hardware and learn at some point.

>tfw got an x230 for $200
>pristine condition
>only flaw being a small patch of discolored plastic on the top which can be covered with a sticker
>6 cell battery lasts ~4 hours of intense internet browsing with brightness set to 13
>the hdd is usually louder than the fan

I thought thinkpads were a meme but after using one I can say that they are comfy unless you want to use it as your main machine

I really like the design of that laptop in the pic.
It looks so compact and bulky.
It's kinda cute.
