Can someone pls explain to me what is done to video for it to become HDR video?
Is it just amping up de dynamic range (make lighter areas brighter and dark areas darker), or does it require special camera equipment?
If I play HDR content on a non HDR tv, will it be watchable or will it just look like blown out shite?

it's just a meme, don't fall for it

Monitor can have higher contrast ratio.
Monitor can playback 10 bit colors.
120hz+120fps material.

>play HDR content on a non HDR tv
it will be remapped to look OK on a standard tv
>>

yeah.
If SDR demands 12-bit precision to be banding-free across all its dynamic range, imagine how many bits would HDR require.
>>
What makes HDR happen? Is it encoding? Is it the hardware (panel?) If I look at comparison videos on my non hdr screen i see a difference...but it's no hdr ?
>>
>>59204638
you've answered yourself basically
if you can see the difference on your non-hdr screen then it proves it's a gimmick

I Think these comparisons are exaggerations meant to show what it does. Kind of like those old HD vs SD comparisons where the SD was extremely blurred.
>>

any image you see "showing" the difference is literally a simulation meant to show illustrate a point, NOT an actual representation of what you would see, since you physically can't see an HDR image without an HDR capable display.

HDR is several display technologies rolled together, it's higher brightness, higher contrast ratio, and higher bit depth, all being used along with OLEDs or an advanced array of dimmable LEDs to produce an image that is superior to standard HD video.

It allows you to display SUPER bright areas and very dark areas of the SAME frame without color banding or light bleeding. Blacks will look black instead of washed out grey as they do on 95% of current consumer TVs and monitors.

>120hz+120fps material.
What does this have to do with HDR?
>>
>>59204144
SDR TV uses 8 bit colors, so any subpixel of red blue or green has 256 different levels of brightness. HDR TV uses 10 bit, so you get 1024 levels of brightness resulting in finer detail between shades of a similar color. The difference is most noticeable in dark scenes where the dark colors are so similar it sometimes looks like a blurry mess of black

mhm, so even non hdr content will look better on an hdr panel, why do we need a separate type of encoding to make something hdr? it's like the panel does all the work...
>>
>>59206039
The panel does most of the work, HDR w/ metadata however requires more data to work and more complicated decoding of that data.

>>59204144
Uzbekistan wandering pictures had HDR since ages ago.
It called 10bit
