Guessing when you strap it to a vehicle you can go over-under-over the handles to stop it moving around

>First, it had three comfortable rounded stamped handles. This allowed the cans to be passed down the line from one soldier to the next to the next in bucket-brigade fashion, as one soldier would use the far-sided handle to hand over the exposed free handle on the other far side, rapidly and easily exchanging hands down the line.
>One soldier could use the single center handle to comfortably carry a single can with each hand, while maintaining their balance walking over the battlefield’s rough terrain.

Having handled quite a few Jerry cans: The middle handle is comfortable when carrying by yoruself because it does cant the can into your leg or thigh, especially with one in each hand such that the load is balanced but when carrying with another person the handles either side mean that you aren't fighting for the middle handle. Really clever little tins, if only they didn't leak and stink and chafe and accumulate rust and paint chips in the fuel.
