Would this be a good device to convert to a piratebox that runs off a power bank. Or is it better to try the super cheap zsun SD card router or even other portable routers?

It's low power so it wont have very good range. That being said it should work fine, You could even rig up a portable solar panel to power it and just leave it in your car serving files everywhere you go.
