Are Swiss/Japanese made quartz watches around the 500 dollar mark really better than Chinese ones of a similar price made for big western designer brands or is that just a meme?
>>
>shitters wearing fake watches and seiko shitters not being able to recognize fake watches

and then there's >>59187461 asking about $500 quartz shit
>>
>>59187461
It depends there are a lot of shitters putting $1 quartz movement into shiny cases and charging high prices like Daniel wellington

Companies like bulova and seiko make high quality quartz watches.

>>
>>59187724
Tissot is one of those "shitter" companies I mentioned. They really bring nothing new to the table. They buy swiss quartz movements and cram them into generic cases. The swiss quartz are high quality, but they're not innovative in any way.

Bulova and Seiko actually offer innovative quartz watches
>>
>>59187696
So, you're also a Seiko (and Vostok, kek) shitter. Just confirming my suspicion

Why don't ebay sellers selling vintage watches just do some extremely light restoration before selling their watch?

Just shit like cleaning it, polishing the crystal and the metal.

It does if you get all crazy and break out the polishing drill.

No harm comes by rubbing with a jewlers cloth and some polywatch.

Except for ruining the factory finish completely. It's fine if you want to do it to your own watches but don't try and sell me that shit like you did me a favor.

Then don't buy it then. But I guarantee if you put two watches on ebay, one is shiny and polished and the other battered and scratched. The polished one will sell for more.

Well if there's a service center in country you pay VAT. Though if it's sent to Switzerland or whatever IMO the most fair solution is either Swiss VAT is applied at the service center or local VAT at the shop that sent it out, NOT at the border by customs.

Still VAT over 15% is government robbery.

Single axis tourbillons are a meme in wristwatches, but what about two axis tourbillons like Jaeger LeCoultre's two axis gyrotourbillon?

In theory, a bi-axial tourbillon should have zero positional variance, and with the second and third iterations JLC used cylindrical and now spherical hairsprings that should be capable of much better concentricity than flat hairsprings.

Tri-axial tourbillons are a meme though, as the third axis of rotation is unnecessary to allow the balance wheel to assume every position in three dimensions.

I think you are confusing "solid" with "pure"

18k is surely cheaper than 24k but its also more functional to wear.

gold plating or cheap coatings can't properly emulate the look and feel of real gold and will inevitably wear off in places and look like shit

This is a decent explanation of it:

"A world timer features an internal bezel displaying 24 world cities, each representing a different time zone. Next to this is a 24-hour ring that does one full revolution a day. The user sets the time-zone bezel to align their home time zone with the correct hour of the day on the 24-hour ring. As time passes, the 24-hour ring rotates. The point where the 24-hour ring lines up with the time zone you’re looking for shows you the hour of the day."

I would understand this if you had really skinny arms and the bracelets could stop the watch from sliding around. Otherwise, I would think that /fa/ would to that a lot more than /g/.

What about vintage watches that were never designed with water resistance in mind?

And brand new dress watches don't come with any kind of water resistance ratings either.

SHITTY air force chronographs are delicate. Good air force chronographs laugh at high G-forces, and have no problem with being worn daily even when 40+ years old.

And it only cost $4800 more!

Am I the only one that hates the lume meme and le post loom shots?

I hate that watches with bright loom still shine even when it's not dark so everything that should be white is tinged green instead.

Lemania 5100 chronographs were not that expensive when they were in volume production, their values have been inflated by their rarity.

Also, for the record I did get this one for $400 USD on eBay about 10 years ago (though it was an absolute steal even then at that price).

I hate this to. Luminova is fucking ugly and honestly it's not like it feels like a child's toy version of the old radium/tritium paint that they used to use. Beyond the lovely aesthetics of the soft, creamy-orange patina that radium/tritium paint develops over time, there's just something so cool about radioluminescence especially compared to glow-in-the-dark Luminova which, again, feels like a gimmicky kid's toy.

I admittedly don't have a lot of experience with vintage watches, but at least comparing the old GMTs, Submariners, and Explorer IIs with their newer counterparts and there's no comparison for which one looks better. Particularly on a white dial for an Explorer II, the constant green tinge is honestly deal breaking. I'm honestly amazed that the tritium dial ones are cheaper.

Mine still glows very, very faintly.

Lemania 5100 powered chronographs were literally issued by more than one air force in a direct parallel to the 1963.

If anything, the Lemania 5100 was developed primarily with value engineering in mind to make a low cost, reliable, automatic chronograph.

Here is some reading you can do on the subject if you are interested.
