Looks like the Tada68 is back for a while on KBDfans on AE.
Worth getting the plastic case? Or should i stick to 20$ off and just get the anne pro? The arrow keys are nice, and all but I dunno if it's gonna be a deal breaker.
>>
>>59182954
If you need the arrow keys and don't care about RGB backlight and Bluetooth, get the TADA68, otherwise go for the Anne PRO.
>>
>>59183685
I guess I'm a bit more worried about longevity and quality. For one thing, I'm sort of waiting on the brown switches for the Anne PRO to come back. On the other hand, it's still 20 buckaroos off and I am a cheapskate for buying for myself.
>>
>>59182954
The TAD68 is fully programmable and has a nice white backlight and some of the best keycaps money can buy. The anne pro is cheaper, has bluetooth, RGB lighting and okay keycaps, but it isn't programmable like the TAD68.
>>
>>59183847
You can program the Anne Pro on the app. It's a bit finicky, but you can assign pretty much anything to any key besides some special ones like Fn+B for Bluetooth.
>>
>>59183830
You can get the TADA68 for around 60 bucks and the Anne Pro for like 50 on Taobao
>>
>>59183881
Programming the tada68 is much easier and more versatile since its completly programmable.
>>
>>59183891
>>59183918
Interesting propositions. I'm not so sure about taobao, though. What are the chances I'll get chinked? More so than banggood or ali express?
I'm looking up some guides on how to buy from them in the meantime, but I'm not super sure if they can send to the (philippines)
>>
>>59183918
That's why I said it's finicky. You can rebind stuff for multiple profiles, but it's annoying and not as versatile as the TADA68, but it's 'programmable'.
>>
how does one go about initiating a group buy with SP or whomever?
>>
>>59183941
You can use an agent like taobao trends if you cant speak chinese. There is another one, but I just used google translate and made a chinese paypall account. Suprisingly it worked and they shipped a keyboard to me. Look for sellers with a bunch of positive reviews
>>
>>59183971
First make an original design, or if its an existing one get permission from the creator. Next just talk to them
http://keycapsdirect.com/contact.php
>>
>>59183941
You'll have to pay a service fee and possibly end up spending the money you've saved on shipping, but you can use an agent. Since you're from the Philippines the shipping might not be that expensive though. I've ordered a TADA68 through Basetao, and the experience was pretty positive overall, but the shipping ended up being a bit expensive.
>>
>>59183993
>>59184039
Agents seem pretty straight forward, I'll look around on other websites as well regarding their experiences.
Do you happen to know the different switches when they're translated from ching chong to english?
I'm seeing things like Tea shaft, Green axis, , red axis, black tea shafts, among other things.

Thanks for the responses.
>>
Is there a full size keyboard with the numpad and arrow keys on the left side? Or at least the numpad on the left?
>>
>>59184097
Tea is just browns
https://deskthority.net/wiki/Gateron_KS-3_series
The chinese names are different
>>
>>59184097
Tea is brown, but the rest is pretty straight forward. Axis/shaft is just how Google translates shit, but that means switch.
Also, green probably means blue if the kanji used is 青.
>>
>>59184113
why not just get an external numpad?
>>
>>59184113
Yes google left handed keyboards
>>
>>59184131

I won't have to if the keyboard already has it.

>>59184140

ok, thanks.
>>
>>59184167
"lefty" mech keyboards are incredibly rare and costly, getting an external numpad will be cheaper in the long run.
>>
>>59184128

>>
>>59184123
>>59184128
Thanks, anons. I'll be looking around for cheaper boards, then. Do you happen to have a taobao link for the ~$50 anne pro? checking around now and the closest I can get is roughly ~$53 for the bluetooth edition, which would make the most comfort for both laptop and desktop.
>>
>>59184210
I don't speak chink and it means the same thing in Japanese, so it's not like it makes a difference. Still, thanks for the correction I guess.
>>
>>59184194

Then I will settle for an external numpad, I guess.

Why the fuck is the right side the norm for numpads? You can't keep your right hand in the mouse and your left hand in the numpad for office work...
>>
>>59184251
Seeing as mandarin has been simplified and kanji to hanzi doesn't always translate directly, hanzi is different from kanji.
>>
>>59184265
Ask IBM, they are nostly at fault for the "standard" keyboard layout.
>>
>>59184265
Numpad would have been put there before computer mice became a thing, perhaps even before computers, and I don't know if you've noticed but standard layout is reluctant to change

I honestly never understood this meme.
A lot of functionality is sacrificed to save a little space. Are that people really space-compromised as to require a keyboard that small? On top of that here is very minimal cool factor with the normies.

Then again I bring my 108-U to work and home. My co-workers think I'm batshit for bringing a keyboard into work every day.

I digress, but the Topre does actually slow down my typing compared to Cherry by 5-10 wpm. But it's still worth it for dat cuprubber feel.
>>
>>59187633
not really losing functionality on that form factor. all the keys not physically present are just moved to the Fn layer
>>
>Topres make you type slower

Why even use them then?
>>
>>59188027
some people bottom out by habit so for them they gotta be nice because they feel very nice when you bottom them out
>>
So if one would want to improve their typing what switch would you go for?

How do you train yourself to not bottom out?
>>
>>59187633
The HHKB has been around for over 20 years and it got its prestige from all the big linux users so its very popular among that community. Plus if you are an emacs user all the keys that you need are right there. It also got high praise from the Linux Journal back in 1998 and it cost $190 back then.
>>
>>59188344
>How do you train yourself to not bottom out?
you can type slowly, or get a heavy switch like mx super blacks
>>
>>59188344
The switch won't matter much but a set of blank keycaps and maybe a new layout will force you to properly relearn touch-typing. That could make you faster.
Training yourself to not bottom out is kind a hard depending on your switch, with linears it feels close to impossible, with some clicky and exceptionally tactile switches it is pretty easy. Are you sure you want to not bottom out? Maybe soft orings could reduce the chances, but not bottoming out makes most switches feel pretty bad imo.

There's no need to be rude, anon. I enjoy being exposed to new things, and these threads are a good enough aggregator of new niche keyboard products that I don't need to bother tolerating reddit or forums.

You should try something new sometime! If you live in Oregon I'd be happy to show you something new, maybe help you get past your agoraphobia and hoplophobia with a trip to the range!

>>59188344
The whole point of clicky switches is to give you a nice loud indicator that the switch has been activated so you can back off it. If you really want to learn, the louder and more prominent the feedback, the better. So buckling spring would help you do that, or MX blue otherwise. IMO, bottoming out isn't a big deal.
>>
Anyone using Linux and has created their own custom keyboard layout using XKB? I just did, because I bought a Magicforce 68 which uses an ANSI layout, but I'm actually German and want to type my beloved Umlauts easily: äöü߀ -- these are now mapped to the respective keys on the third layer (Right Alt/AltGr/ISO Level 3 Shift) of my keyboard and nothing else, which I quite like. (I did not remap Z and Y though, I want to force myself to get used to the regular ANSI layout).

If anyone wants some advice on how to do this I might write something a bit more detailed regarding the process.
>>
>>59188741
PS: I could also have used the Composite key to type these, but doing it this way is much more complicated and requires as much as 4 different keys and two chained hotkeys, which is just bothersome.

They suck ass. The closest I can get to comparing them is reds with a rubber pad at the bottom. Not a rubber dome, just a springy pad of rubber.

Like another anon here said, that's what you get when you design a switch all around backlighting

Where is the buyer's guide?

Anyway, looking for a new keyboard with more of a tactile bump than Cherry MX browns which are just too mushy. Cherry MX blues are OK, but can be loud. As a writer, sometimes I prefer it, but sometimes I just want more quiet.

>Budget
<= $150 ish -- getting really tired of spending +$100 on mechanical keyboards that just crap out. Filco Majestouch and a few more.

>Location (continent at least)
North America

>Preferred switch type
Undecided, what's the most popular for professional writers?

>Layout
ANSI

>Form factor
80% / TKL

>Backlight
Nice feature but not required

>Previous/current keyboards
Multiple Cherry MX blue and browns. Tired of browns. I am curious about Cherry MX clear, but not sure if it's the right fit. I type non-stop for a living and try to type as light and fast as I can.

TADA68. Same amount of keys, only four non-standard caps, full programmability.

The VA68M itself is well built, has a nice alu case and its stock keycaps are quality PBT with nice legends. It's only downfall is the lack of programability.

Assuming you want to bottom out even easier, in terms of tactile, MX Brown is the lightest there is (55g bottom out) so you'd need to make customs ones with even lighter springs.

The lightest 'out of the box' switch AFAIK is the Gateron Translucent White with a 40g linear bottom out. I don't know which keyboards come with that switch off the top of my head.

mx silent? i havn't seen that switch before and it's just a more expensive red marketed as more silent than reds, which is impossible because reds dont make any noise, the only noise you hear is the "clack" of your keycaps hitting the base plate

The switch is actually more silent than MX Reds. They added rubber dampeners to the bottom and top of the stem's slider to reduce the sound from bottoming out and from the upstroke
>>
>>59209069
Doesnt deserve a 35 dollar premium on amazon when o-rings/dental bands exist
>>
>>59211190
I bought the switches themselves at the same price as any other MX switch so I can't speak for how they're priced on existing keyboards.

I'd normally agree with the o-ring sentiment but the upstroke dampening makes a big difference. This is something that can't be done w/ o-rings or dental bands.

Dampeners like zealencios are a different story, but that itself carries its won price premium.
>>

what you described is nice too, though
>>
What are o-rings for and are they /mkg/-approved

They're for making bottoming out feel really gross and soft, like pushing something into a bowl of mashed potatoes

the analogy is good when comparing mx green to blue, or linear grey to black to red.
Although tactile grey's stem mold is same as clear's, the latter's spring is more optimized for it to accentuate tactility. This is apparent when pushing the tip of a panda clear (clear stem + black spring) and stock clear against one another. The stock clear overcomes its bump first, even though the panda clear is a lighter spring; the shorter length of the stock spring exploits certain parts of the mx switch design.
On the other hand, the springs used in both tactile grey and linear grey are identical; Cherry didn't really bother making an essentially a stiffer version of clear's special spring for the tactile grey.

Is it worth the effort to lube switches? I've had a gateron brown v60 for half a year now and it feels like a lot of the switches have gotten a lot worse, I think it might be the lube wearing off. When you don't press them directly down you can feel the friction on the housing or generally some keys aren't as smooth as others. It's made typing fucking terrible, the inconsistency and extra force you need for some makes it so uncomfortable to type on this anymore.
Otherwise I think I might just buy a new set of gateron browns off taobao and solder them on myself, they're dirt cheap anyway.
>>
Why did Cherry fuck up their one great switch, clears, by making them heavy as shit?
Even without bottoming out this is a workout, god help you if you do bash the keyboard, because their final weight is even heavier than blacks.

So I have an ergodox, and I wanted to know what the best way to get used to typing on it as quickly as possible was. I've edited it a little bit (moved ctrl and tab to standard keyboard positions for gayman and a few other minor changes) but I haven't changed the vast majority of it. The default position of the ," key kind of baffles me because it's apparently set up for programming but this feels like a super fucking awkward spot for it since it's not exactly easy to hit if your fingers are on the home row.

The key spacing is really fucking me up, I'm not used to them not being staggered.

Are typing games a valid way to get back up to speed or is there a better way? The faster the better.

Build it yourself. You can probably do it for about $150.

I'm looking into buying a HHKB. I've been really wanting to get a 60% and recently I've gotten into using emacs bindings. How much of a meme is it? How do Topres compare to MX Browns?
>>
>>59231416
Separate or attached? winkeyless.kr has the B.mini EX which is exactly that but with a numpad attached to the side. Otherwise you've got the b.pad also from wkl, chinese b.pad clones from keyboarddiy.taobao.com or something like the ducky pocket if the idea of a separate numpad that can also be unplugged and used as a standalone calculator appeals to you.
>>
>>59231444
you should test one before paying that much imo.
you could also use a gh60 with hhkb layout, maybe even make some additional keys for the wasted space.

Yeh, that's a memeforce, though my motivations were more related to my desoldering machine not working properly and me ripping a few pads off the PCB, at which point I decided to just handwire it. Though it didn't have a very long life, since something was royally fucked, and I couldn't figure out what it was, I'm guessing I fucked something up when configuring the firmware. Alas, maybe I'll revive it again some day, the matrix and everything is still there, it's just missing a controller.

Almost, they're gateron clears.

Excuse my retardation but are there any particular brands or models I should be looking for when buying a mech keyboard?
>>
Is there any wristrest /mkg/ would recommend? The keyboard I'm getting doesn't come with one and I like having them.
>>
>>59237436
For low end magicforce, royal kludge, tomoko, and Anne Pro
For mid range Ducky, Leopold, Cooler Master Filco/Rosewill
For high end look for those fully programmable korean customs
>>
>>59237976
You shouldn't be using a wrist rest as any strain on your wrist is bad for you. An arm rest would be better, but if you insist then just get a towel that you like. Its better as its much easier to clean all the sweat, oils, and dead skin
>>
>>59238032
I don't actually rest my wrists on it, just the bottom of my palm. My actual wrists aren't resting on anything on my current keyboard, my arms rest on the chair's armrests and then the bottom part of my palm on the "wristrest".
>>
considering getting a CM Quickfire Rapid as my first mech keyboard. Should I spend a little more for something of much greater value or is the quickfire fine?
also, how does /g/ clean their keyboard/keycaps?
>>
>>59238190
I have the Glorious PC Gaming Race one and although a little cheesy, it's actually really good quality and comfy. The negative reviews of the Grifiti pads put me off those and towards this to be honest.

I'd like a wood one too, just deciding which to buy..
>>
>>59238509
The QFR is basically as high quality as mainstream keyboards (IE Can be found in a brick and mortar store) get. It's a great first mech, but i'd recommend looking at something with Gateron switches instead of Cherry's.

Gateron's are far smoother and are essentially identical to Cherry in design, but are using newer machines and smoother molds for the stems, allowing for better build quality in spite of their chinese origin.
>>
>>59238705
I saw that one on Amazon, avoided it for pretty much the same reason, but it's good to know that it's comfortable at least. Wood one could be nice, but they seem to be very expensive for what they are, i.e. a piece of wood. CM is selling one for their keyboards, but I'm not going to pay ~35 EUR for a piece of wood.
>>
>>59235635

>>59238838
just build it yourself. it is really not hard.
>>
>>59239030
>just build it yourself. it is really not hard.
I don't have any experience working with wood, but I'd try that before paying 35 EUR for something like that, even if I probably wouldn't get something quite as nice.
>>
>>59239168
>>I don't have any experience working with wood, but I'd try that before paying 35 EUR for something like that, even if I probably wouldn't get something quite as nice.
really, wood is forgiving as hell, just get some nice looking well dried hardwood and use a handplane or a rasp and lots of sandpaper, work up to 120 grit, oil it, sand it a tiny bit with 320 grit and give it some more linseed oil that you wipe off after like 10 minutes.
>>
>>59239228
Sounds pretty straightforward, I'll give it a shot.
>>
im confused. if were to build a mechanical keyboard with lights. how would i go about doing so? do i need to buy switches WITH LED's, do they come with the PCB, or do i buy them seperately?
