What you're referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. I installed FreeBSD the other day on a whim. This is the first OS that I have a problem with literally every step of getting my work flow setup. Workarounds to get Workarounds to work.

I want to like it, but I must be coming about it the wrong way. It seems very stable, but also much slower than my xubuntu.

The desktop experience won't be smooth the first time around, especially if you approach it like you do Linux. It does a lot of things differently, and trying to resolve the problems like you do on Linux isn't going to work

Also, the experience gets a lot better if your hardware is supported, just like Linux.
