I'm thinking of pairing it with a i3 4160. Performance seems aceptable according to most videos i've seen on youtube.

I'm afraid my motherboard may bottleneck things, considering i've got the bottom of the barrel h81 chipset.

Then again supposedly newer intel microarchitectures have cpu and gpu directly talking to each other so i'm not sure my mobo will make a difference or not.

I need to research this more.

EVGA Gtx 980TI classified. I overpaid. I know I did and I don't care. Been maxing out 1440p on all titles since its release and am thoroughly enjoying myself. It's cooler is a lot more quiet too than standard sized fans.

My fan's are barely even on. 99% of the time the card's fans are off until it hits 65C. It probably also helps I have the fractal R5 case with sound dampening all over.

I have a Define R4, so basically the same. You must play some real undemanding games for your fans to be off most of the time. It quickly gets up to near 80 when put under heavy load, which isn't great for such a huge cooler. I might be inclined to believe mine was faulty or something, but all the reviews matched up with my numbers, so that can't be it. It's just not that great a cooler, which is somewhat understandable given that the card is designed to be put under water and cranked to take advantage of that upgraded PCB.

The only good thing I have to say about it is that mine was a real good overclocker, with an ~85% ASIC that did over 1400MHz out of the box well over 1500MHz manually on stock voltage. It was just too loud though, so I sold it.

oh and as far as games, no. I play some of the AAA garbage that hits the market (Wolfenstien, DOOM, COD, etc) and the card does get to maybe 78C, but that's going balls out maxed out gameplay for hours on end.

Then again, like I said. Sound proofed case, a very good headset and explosions in my ears. Maybe I'm just blind to it. I came from dual r9 290's in xfire before.

As far as water/LN2 cooling, I was on the fence about going under water for my 980TI classy. Saw people getting 1750mhz on the core just by going on water. Trick is to keep the card under 70C. The 9xx series architecture gets unstable and falls out of boost at anything beyond 85C. 70C when you're REALLY leaning on the card/.
