Apple literally loves removing things from products. It's what they do.

Honestly I'd like this to happen just so USB-C becomes completely universalised, but I'm not sure. Apple's sunk a lot of money into developing a Lightning ecosystem, but more importantly it's about half the thickness of USB-C which is what Apple's all about at the moment.

As an aside, I think going purely with USB-C on the new MBP was a great idea and hopefully it'll only be a few more years before 3.5mm jacks will be phased out completely. That'll also mean digital audio output as standard which is only a good thing.
