Intel apparently will be lowering the prices on their Broadwell-E chips. The i7 6900k might come down to $700, and that means the lower tiered 6850k and 6800k will be bordering on decent price/performance. Understandable if they want to make a 6 core Coffee Lake part for their mainstream platform.

We've been stagnating for far too long, and its not because multiple cores are too difficult to utilize. Plenty of software today is well threaded, and having more cores available also means you can simply run more programs at once without impacting performance of anything else running. 6c/12t and 8c/16t are a great step forward. AMD once again leading the market in establishing new paradigms.

The only reason to have under 8GB of RAM is if it's a phone, embedded system, or similar.

RAM is used by your OS for caching all sorts of shit, even with a decent sized SSD, having more RAM available is pretty much ALWAYS going to be better.

>>
>>59151073
Are you retarded? If you had been in almost any thread from the past ~3 years on /g/ about building a computer for gaming, MOST people were recommending i5's because the performance difference between an i5 and i7 is minimal and your GPU is more important, so the extra $100 instead of going to the i7, should go towards a better GPU, or better monitor.

TLDR; wew you must be new here, or trolling.

Play GTA5 with 2GB vRAM and have less than 4GB of system RAM and let me know how it goes, vs that SAME system with 16GB of decently fast RAM.

You'll get ~10-20 fps improvement and less frame dips.

>Says other people are moving goalposts
>Move from 8GB of RAM to 4GB
>The 16GB has to be "decently fast" now
>Oh and only if you're also a GPUlet

So under no reasonable circumstances that don't involve massive mismatches between system RAM and your GPU (16GB of DDR4 2666 RAM is more expensive than most 4GB vRAM GPUs!)
>>
>>59151205
Lol, i'm just browsing the internet right now.
11 tabs open in chrome.

Music playing in the background, rainmeter also running, and a cloud backup service running in the background.

Total RAM use 14.2GB

Since I have two monitors I could throw a game up on my main screen and easily use 20GB+

I have 32GB though so i'm not worried.
>>
>>59151115
If you reach the point where a game is swapping assets from system memory to video memory, your performance has already gone completely to shit. It's the very reason why running out of VRAM is an issue at all.

So you're saying:
>2 cores = horse
>4 cores = car

This is basically the most retarded analogy you could have made in this regard because we're talking
two different performance levels of the same technology here, while you're trying to make it look like
as if 2 cores and 4 cores were fundamentally different in their construction and use.

More like
>2 cores = 50HP car
>4 cores = 100HP car

See where this is going? 100HP might me justified and it's nice to have but that's it. You get
around fine with 50HP.
>>
>>59160966
>this level of stupidity

Twice as many cores or possibly even more won't give you ANY advantage in performance with software like MS Office or Chrome, Firefox, whatever browser you're using. If you buy a PC today you're gonna get a quad core CPU if it's a desktop but if you still own, let's say, a 4 year old i3 dual core it would be retarded to upgrade. Hell, for pure desktop use and browsing the web you'd get along fine with a 3GHz P4 if it weren't for the limitations in amount and speed of RAM.

>>
>>59161229
Who said it's gonna be enough forever? It's just a fact that system requirements for web browsing haven't changed in the least over the last 5 years. Same goes with requirements of
text processing and spreadsheet work. There is no reason to upgrade a 5 year old system if that's all you're doing.

>>59161238
Did I say anything about Ryzen? A lot of enthusiasts will have a lot of fun with this new platform. All I, and several others in this thread were saying is that it is not necessary for 99%
of PC users because 99% of PC users don't even utilize the full performance of their dual core CPUs and probably won't ever in their life time.

You're just plain wrong. The rise of HTML5 has even lowered requirements for a lot of websites. YouTube used to be far more resource intensive back when it used Flash. Hell,
even recent versions of Flash are more efficient than that shit used to be in 2012 or earlier because they reduced GPU usage. Everything web related has become more efficient
in the last few years. Anything that could play a 1080p YouTube video 5 years ago can play today's 4k YouTube videos without problems.

Using dual core thinkpad. Feelsgudman.jpg
>>
Looking at the beyond retarded discussion here I just conducted a little web browsing performance test. Keep in mind: This is not representative or scientific in any way. I just wanted to know how many 1080p YouTube videos playing simultaneously my two computers can handle. The test systems are:

>i5 4690k desktop (quad core)
>i5 3320m laptop (dual core)
Both with 8GB 1600MHz RAM and SSD installed, both with Windows 10 and Vivaldi and nothing else open besides Task Manager to measure CPU load. I tried to keep
the setups as similar as I could. Both were also set to maximum performance in Windows power management.

The 4690k desktop reached 100% CPU load with 25 1080p videos playing at the same time. Anything more produced noticeable lag in the videos and Vivaldi finally crashed when I opened the 39th video.

The 3320m reached 100% and showed its first signs of lag with 19 videos playing and Vivaldi crashed at the 31st video.

I know this is by no means extensive testing but I was surprised at how much the 3320m could actually handle. If that laptop was my only computer I'd say I wouldn't need to upgrade for the sake
of opening more tabs.
