FORK OPENBSD IN RUST

I've wanted to run NetBSD on some older systems but there's nothing it really offers me that I don't already have on the operating systems they were made to run.

If OpenBSD would run on my laptop I would use it.

Because the only thing about BSDs that appeals to me is the security focus of OpenBSD.

why?

Trying to justify subjective values is like trying to describe a color that no one else can see.

FreeBSD Really seemed to of simplified updating and installing stuff with the ports package, but if you don't install the ports installer thing and look at their library of program ports installing stuff seems a bit confusing. I'm not sure if I should just install the thing and try to get a working internet connection to download things through that system, or stick programs on a USB stick and try to install them on the system without it even though it might not be compatible at all without running an emulator or something.
It's great there are so many unix distros but lots of them seem to be evolving so far away from one another and being incompatible losing a lot of the strength of being free or open without users becoming very technical.
>>
>>59142068
I do not, because the impression I get is that it doesn't have much support since there's so few users. I want to try it, though, I'll try running a vm of it and mess around with it once I get the time.

I use it in the form of Mac OS X, but other than that I don't.

I want to try a different BSD distro. Should I do FreeBSD? I tried GhostBSD and it wouldn't install, and since it's GUI only on the installer app I couldn't figure out what happened. What's the easiest way to make a FreeBSD bootable flash drive? Should I just dd the ISO image or what? I tried Unetbootin and the flash drive wouldn't boot.

Anyone wanna tell me how to make the FreeBSD bootable media?
>>
>>59142621
I would of but I'm not sure I want to help hitler with his IT problems.
For some odd reason Freebsd doesn't like to work as a boot with USB's, the files get corrupted

I do, not for home, ofc. It's a legacy at work, I will migrate it to CentOS soon.
>>
>>59142704
I was having the same problem. There isn't a lot of resources for googling it.
I found the Iso's work just fine though if you make a boot disc instead of usb drive.
>>
>>59142068

no, because it mostly is gay
pf is pretty good, Theo may be fun, and that's the extent to which I'm willing to be nice with BSD
ports are lame
ZFS is antiquated shit
jails are primitive

Yes actually. I'm well versed in the use of OpenBSD and its utilities.

I really like pf. Very fun and interesting to play with.

I could also close-source it and sell it. The ultimate freedom. Pic related is Microsoft by comparison.

How do you find out what the differences are between various snapshot versions? for example:

ftp://ftp.freebsd.org/pub/FreeBSD/snapshots/arm/armv6/ISO-IMAGES/11.0/

FreeBSD-11.0-STABLE-arm-armv6-RPI-B-20161209-r309771.img.xz
FreeBSD-11.0-STABLE-arm-armv6-RPI-B-20170105-r311441.img.xz
FreeBSD-11.0-STABLE-arm-armv6-RPI-B-20170126-r312829.img.xz
FreeBSD-11.0-STABLE-arm-armv6-RPI-B-20170203-r313108.img.xz
FreeBSD-11.0-STABLE-arm-armv6-RPI-B-20170210-r313553.img.xz

where are the change logs?

> inb4 google it

from https://www.freebsd.org/snapshots/

> snapshots will be very similar to full releases, except that they might not include all the bits included in a full release
> They may include experimental or degraded features that can corrupt your existing system.

so where is the documentation?
>>
>>59142925
ZFS is bad, yes

shit license (reminds me one thing about BSD: it's also true the licenses themselves generally are good)
arrays cannot be modified without starting over from scratch
no clustering

does it work? yes
is it shit? just as much
>>
>>59142997
pretty sure you can use SVN and find the changes by inputting a release number

Tech noob here. Wouldn't BSD be the smuggest of operating systems?

>Gentoofags compiling shit over everything
>archfags pissed that something broke on their custom build
>ubuntufags getting mad at Ubuntu-isms
>debianfags mad their OS is stable but boring

All the above victims to Linux-isms

Might just uninstall lubuntu on my spare laptop and attempt BSD for the hell of it. (Or is BSD crap)
>>
if i want to download the latest version 11 of FreeBSD (not v12), with all the errata and all latest security bugs fixed, should i get STABLE or SNAPSHOT or ???
>>
>>59143005
You don't have to use ZFS it is an optional thing with freebsd, you probably don't even have the kind of hardware you'd want to use it with anyway.
>>
>>59143206
it's just one of those crappy things bsdimwits are so proud of
