I currently have a GTX970, but want a second graphics card. Does it have to be an identical card, or could I do a 1060+970?

You are thinking of SLI.

You could have a different card power a different monitor, or buy another 970 to run in SLI.

If you want SLI, you'd need a second 970, preferably of the same manufacture/brand.

However, you could get a second card and relegate the 970 to PhysX processing, but that would only benefit certain titles a little bit.
