I'm also looking for a portable IEM/headphone when commuting to/from school and for studying within $50. Looking at Headroom's measurements, PortaPros/KCS75's look very close to 668B's with less treble. Really dumb question that I know is going to piss off some audiophiles out there, but if I were to invest in a good pair of headphones and a mixer, can I achieve that meme 7.1 virtual sound you would hear in a gayming headset?

I'm not using these for gaming, but I'm so used to hearing everything 7.1 virtual sound enabled, that I think not having that feature would bother me. I've had my piece of shit headset since I was in highschool and I want it to die already.
>>
>>59126171

>>
Just bought HD598SE. This thing doesnt need an amp, right?
>>
>>59126536
I do since I don't want my neighbours to hear when I play eroges or watch porn.
>>
>>59126507
You can do it with software. I think Razer offers one. Probably some others do as well. Most software based ones have latency issues in my experience, but I havent tested too much. Could be ones that dont. You can also purchase an internal soundcard which offers virtual surround.

Though if it is a digital mixer [as in it uses USB to connect to your PC], you cant use the soundcard based one. Only software. If it is an analogue mixer, then you can use the soundcard.
>>
>>59126624
Correct.
>>
Is it true that the HD600s sound better than the 650s? The 650s are sitting on my head and I can't imagine it getting much better than this
>>
>>59126867
Depends on preference. I like 600's more, some don't. 600's have more forward highs, and less midbass. Overall I feel a more neutral sound sig, though not as smooth as the 650's.
>>
>>59126636
>neighbours
Hence why I said willingly. Wouldn't you want to blast your porn games as loud as you want if you had no one else around you for a mile?
>>
>>59126899
Hmm okay, I'm terrified of highs. The 650s are the only set of cans that haven't caused me to cringe during songs
>>

I would never recommend this to anyone, no matter what their taste is. It's "meant" to have strong bass and treble, but it doesn't do that in practice.
The headphone is poorly designed, both in the earpads and leak susceptibility. There is a large variation in the low end response between listeners, or even the same listener.

>how is comfort?
Comfort is okay, the headphone frame is fairly large, suited to my large head. Pads are not form fitting, compounding sound issues.

>Jesus fucking christ why does this exist
Because it's easier to jam a bunch of shitty speakers into a headset than it is to make a really one good speaker. In fact, that's what's stopping most companies from making good phones.

When you have so many speakers, distortions and interference just make a huge mess out of things.... but they can make them sound REALLY LOUD out of a regular phone/PC audio jack so that's what some retards fall for.

There's actually a chink company that makes headphones out of 12 speakers (6 in each earcup.. pic related) and it's the worst sounding thing I've ever tried. I'm not even kidding... your average $5 earbud phones sounded better.

>>59132143
>Thoughts on the RHA MA750?
Way too expensive for what they sound like. They reminded me of Pistons Hybrids.... for 10x the price. You're paying for metal enclosure manufacturing and styling.

IEMs are generally a huge waste of money. Headphones will almost always give you a much better sound at the same price point. About the only expensive IEMs I can recommend are Etymotic's phones and Yamaha's inner ear EPH 100SL phones. They actually sound good. Everything else is simply not worth the money and sounds like shit.

Describe the sound of the dt880, 770, 990, X2 and other headphones around this price. Trying to debt what to get. I will run them from a fiio e10k
>>
My 0.02c

>>59133337
>DT880
recessed upper midrange, boosted treble, flat bass. Medium soundstage.
>DT770
boosted sub-bass, recessed upper midrange, boosted treble. Small soundstage.
>DT990
boosted upper bass, recessed upper midrange, boosted treble. Medium soundstage.
>X2
boosted upper bass, upper midrange is not as recessed as beyers but not flat either, treble is boosted but not as much as beyers. Medium soundstage.
>HD600
slight sub-bass rolloff, flat mids, slight treble dip, the most neutral in its price bracket. Small soundstage
>HD650
HD600 but with less treble/upper mids, sometimes it's perceived as HD600 with more bass. Small soundstage.
>K701/K702
spiky treble and upper midrange, bass is hit or miss as it's seal dependant, has a weird 'analytical' sound. Large soundstage.
>K712/K7XX
Fixed bass issues on older K701/K702 but it has A LOT more bass and lower midrange, somewhat veiled sound which masks the uneven treble response. Large soundstage.

If you're looking at K7XX, K712's should be 200 Pounds/Euros. K702's are lighter in bass and more on the brighter side. If you want a more neutral phone, check K612's.

I'd suggest HD598se against the DT880.

$150 HD598se (good, slightly bright, very comfortable, removable cable from left side)
$288 HD600 (very good, very neutral, slightly less comfortable, removable cable from both sides)

$0 x220 (will work and be pretty good already (hd598se) or quiet due to low sensitivity but otherwise fine (hd600). An amp makes things better for both)
$76 Fiio e10k dac+amp (chink but good enough)

>>
>>59134750
SHP9500.

>>
>>59134995
The HD599 have the little issue of costing almost as much as HD600. That's absolute nonsensical pricing.

Haven't seen many reviews of HD599 but I'm not surprised, considering the pricing issue. Not even enough reviews to see, ignoring the price, if it's a worthy upgrade over HD598 or not.
>>
>>59133810
Make sure to go with the DT880 premium special edition as it tends to be cheaper than the normal 250 ohm one.

Though if you want the 600 ohm one then you'll need a decent amp. No special edition of these either.

>K702
Headphone has notable peaks around 2-2.5 kHz and 6-7 kHz. A large drop in the high frequency response between those peaks, it can sound dull and distant. You can call that "soundstage" if you like.
Some low end rolloff. I tend make a small, but very broad cut around 150-200 Hz via EQ on the K702 as well.

Honest question, what's the difference between closed and open? Open will leak sound and closed won't? Why do people say open is objectively better?
>>
>>59137900
Open sounds better
>muh soundstage
>>
>>59137900
Closed have shitty to no soundstage. Everything sounds like it's coming out of a tin can.

If you've never used open and only used cheapo IEMs, you can get used to closed quite easily. But if you ever try open, everything else will sound like shit.
>>
>>59137914
>>59137966
What if you don't use headphones to listen to music exclusively? I mean, are all tracks mixed for soundstage? Is all music in movies mixed for it? What about in games?
>>
>>59137986
you notice soundstage in everything. with open headphones, when you listen to music, it feels like you're right there in the studio. with closed, it feels like you're inside of a car listening to music.
>>
>>59138036
I live in a very urban area, close to a train station, why would open headphones benefit me, when I get a lot of ambient noise 75% of the time?
>>
>>59137900
>what's the difference between closed and open?
An open backed headphone is open backed. A closed backed headphone has a closed back.
>Why do people say open is objectively better?
It's not. Full stop.
Open backed headphones have fewer acoustic elements, at very least. A closed backed headphone will have a key sound element an open backed will not have, the closed off rear chamber.
>>
>>59138065
if you're in a closed room, yes. if you're listening outside, no.
>>
>>59138087
What?

>>59138036
>>59138071
So it mostly depends on what you listen to? If you want to experience music, you should go for open, if you want noise isolation for movies and gaming you go for closed?
>>
>>59138152
no you reatrded gaymer manchild. closed sounds like shit with everything.

What's the deal with IEMs? No matter how hard I shove those fuckers in my ear they just pop out 10 seconds later covered in earwax.

>>
>>59137900
>Honest question, what's the difference between closed and open? Open will leak sound and closed won't?

Yep.

>Why do people say open is objectively better?

Because isolation means compromises for that isolation. Generally in the form of higher distortion and no soundstage, instead feeling that music plays right on your head.

So go closed if you gotta use them in an office or otherwise need the isolation. Else, open hands off.
>>
>>59138219

>>
>>59138204
Except that's wrong, shit for brains.
>>
>>59138228

>>
>>59138152
Closed is sacrificing sound for isolation of yourself from outside, and outside from what you are listening to. But if you're at home where you won't be disturbed or others by you, you don't need to sacrifice sound quality.

>>
Is there any notable difference in terms of sound quality beetween the agptek 02 and the fiio m3? I want to buy an mp3 but I'm not sure if the extra bucks are worth it.
>>
>>59138315
I have cleaned them with the peroxide stuff from the drug store, I think my ears produce the stuff abnormally fast and in huge quantities.
>>
>>59138152
If you need isolation, you need to block out, to occlude, sound. A closed back would be useful.
If you do not want to block out sound, or do not care, open backed headphones are an option.
The content of what is played back through the headphone does not matter.
>better
They are simpler, but that still doesn't equal better.
Ill-informed thoughts regarding soundstage aren't even a factor.

>>59138219
In-ears have many shapes, both of the earpieces and the eartips themselves.

>>59138225

ok, im actualy in need of some help. i have been using earbuds for years. not the in your ear canal ones, just the basic headphones that come with your phone. i buy them from radioshack, get the warranty for 1$, then when they break in 6 months, i go back in, have them replaced for free, and get the warranty again. pretty good deal.
im a production manager at my job, so i need to be able to hear stuff around the factory if someone calls me. so the ear buds work perfectly for me. the noise isolation kind causes problems. also im listening to audio books. so quality is not insanely important.

problem is, everywhere seems to have stopped selling earbuds.

so i want to upgrade. i want to move up to a Bluetooth style headset so the cord is not in my way. but it has to last at least 8 hours. and it has to be earbuds, or something similar that will let outside noise in.
can anyone recommend something that fits what i need?

I currently own:
AKG Q701
AGK Q460 x2 (one for office, one for gym)
Sennheiser HD555 (gave to my wife)

Previously also owned HD280 Pro.

Considering a single pair of home headphones should easily last at least 5 years, they aren't really very expensive when you look at the cost over time.

Why so many Sennheisers?
>>
>>59139570
>Except I'm curious about the HD650, HD700, HD800S, DT990,
650's are darker than 600. they feel tiring after few hours.
700's are fairly sibilant and some people like that. EQ highs on 600's and see if you like that. 990's are also sibilant and quite v-shaped. I wasn't a fan of them.

I went through ~30 different cans over the past 2 years. i basically traded & sold cans on various sites and tried pretty much every high-edn can and brand (including Stax and Audeze).

>weird dacs that measure like shit but people like (can't hurt to play with!), odd midi boxes with ancient synth chips in them and so on and so on.
tube amps just distort the shit out of things. rest of the quality solid-state DAC/AMPs sound the same to me. I have Joutenheim right now but to be honest, I can't tell the difference between it and Fiio E10k. I seriously doubt anyone else could either in a blind A/B test.

Pic was from last year, and I got bored of trying to fit in all the headphones I had back then.

I'm looking for some clear sounding closed headphones under 100$. There surely must be something as good as my etymotic hf5 in headphone form. Or is the extra space in the cups vs the direct sound in the earbuds just make it impossible to have a clear sound?

That might be a dumb question because the only headphones I've tried in a long time are either super cheapo ones or my dad's denon's which sound very very echoey.

I guess I could just order a few pairs from amazon and just return them, but I'm a huge faggot and I don't like the idea of ordering something just to try it and then returning it.

dropped pic related directly onto the ground from about 4 feet up and now they sound fuzzy/distorted in some way. is there anything i can do to fix it?
>>
>>59139693
>So which ones were a keep?
all the high-end cans sounded great to me. I don't have golden ears but I came to appreciate good sound.

one thing I couldn't do was to compare them side-by-side so my listening research wasn't as good as some other people conducted.
I liked electrostatic ones a lot but good ones are extremely expensive $2k and up. I didn't want to keep them as a daily driver. they were also sometimes tiring and I couldn't listen for long amounts of time.

after this excursion in high-end audiophile gear, I ended up buying brand-new 600's and calling it a day.

>>59139693
>Ear Speakers! Definitely getting a pair for research purposes once I manage to get my ass to tokyo.
they sounded good but they were uncomfortable. I prefer cans that I can wear for hours on end since I do a lot of programming.

Oops. I guess they aren't for me either then. I easily get headaches from wearing headphones. HD598 were the first pair that I could tolerate. I'm still having trouble with the HD600, which I hope will go away in a while; It isn't as bad as the first couple days anymore.

Also using headphones while at the computer (sysadmin work, programming, watching anime, playing games, whatever)... pretty much all day except sleep or commute.

Sold. Didn't need it.
I liked what I could do to HD 800 more than HD 600, but I have better things to do with that money.
The HD 600 wasn't in any condition to be sold, and its sound is still passable.
I don't like wearing things on my head if I can help it either.

>>
>>59139570
DT990s are probably the funnest sounding out of those and have a really great soundstage (better than the HD600 at least). Some people perceive the treble as harsh but I don't really.
>>
>>59139814
>Oops. I guess they aren't for me either then. I easily get headaches from wearing headphones.
depends on the music you listen to. stuff I like to listen to is not conducive to v-shaped sound. I can't stand those v-shaped or bass-heavy or sibilant phones because they tire me after an hour. I have sensitive ears and I can feel my ear hairs hurt from high/low tones for prolonged periods of time. that shit ain't fun.

>HD598 were the first pair that I could tolerate. I'm still having trouble with the HD600, which I hope will go away in a while; It isn't as bad as the first couple days anymore.
598's are great IMO. I got 600's because I got brand news at 20% off. hard to pass on it.

anyway, I'm pretty much done hopping and searching for that elusive perfect set. it just doesn't exist since human ears are analog and prone to errors.

FLACs are a fucking meme. they come from 44.1k CDs which are compressed to shit. all the new shit is fucking garbage.

good shit are "Mastered for iTunes" 320bps tracks.

Just to clarify I was talking specifically about the DT990-600 Ohm.

I had the 250 Ohm version in the past and it seemed to have slightly harsher highs and was slightly less detailed overall. The Pro version was just dark sounding with recessed mids and highs.
