They were great. Still using a 1090T overclocked to 4GHz at 1.425V. Doesn't get hot at all even at that voltage with a Noctua NH-U14S cooling it. Ironically, they're better now for gaming than they were at launch, since games are using more threads now. I literally get better performance in The Witcher 3 than I do in the original game, since that hammers a single thread only.

Even there with an extremely modest 3.5GHz overclock, a 1090T is right on a 4.2GHz 8350's heels in gaymes.

The 8350 smashes it in productivity tasks though.

It's not really relevant though. The 1090T there is only at 3.5GHz (plus Turbo Core, but that's entirely worthless the instant you place load on a second core). An average 1090T can do around 4GHz without going crazy on the voltage. The average 8350 will do around 4.6GHz under the same conditions. So from that test, a 1090T would actually get slightly closer when you crank both, since it'd get a 500MHz boost and the 8350 would get a 400MHz boost.

Of course, if you really go nuts with voltage then maybe you can get an 8350 close to 5GHz, whilst a 1090T will top out around 4.2GHz, but we're talking literal housefire territory for both in that scenario.

I have an X3 720 knocking around somewhere. The fourth core works, though only up to 3.2GHz or so. Anything over that and it's unstable. Probably why it failed as an X4.

I'm held back by a damaged motherboard. Asus M3N78-EM. Uses DDR2, and 3/4 of my slots don't work properly. So I top out at 4GB max mem. Is the Crosshair V Formula-Z still the best board to get? It seems like the price hasn't dropped at all over the years, and most the reviews everywhere talk about board failures after only a few months.

Solid processor, had it since release all those years ago. Upgraded the system recently with a new motherboard, new ram, new GPU etc but I kept the 1055t.
