Why gentoo? (or gentoo-based distros) Several reasons:
Portage is amazing. It offers USE flags, which allow you to compile your applications however you want them to. Ever had that issue where you can't use the clipboard on vim? Doesn't happen on gentoo, just compile using the 'X' flag.
> inb4 needing to learn pointless bullshit like an autist
That's why you can use Porthole, a GUI applications specifically for interfacing with Portage. Supported by the gentoo developers. If you're on an installed gentoo distro, and have no idea how to use Portage (correctly), just run
emerge porthole
and then
porthole
. Just search for the desired application, and you can pick and choose all the compilation flags you need. They're pretty self explanatory
> inb4 compiling your packages every time.
Portage supports binhosts, libraries of precompiled packages that, on distros like Calculate Linux binhosts are set up by default, and theirs is pretty nice and up-to-date

> inb4 rolling release distros
Gentoo IS NOT rolling release -- Well, it sort of is. Portage has another awesome feature called package masks. If you use Debian, you know the struggle of sacrificing stability for stale packages. You can try using Debian sid, but it's on the other end of the fucking spectrum, where the stability can be likened to something like Arch. The beauty of Gentoo is that you can install whichever package versions you want, with very few issues. Being on Debian stable and trying to install Python 3.6 is going to be a pain in the ass, but in Gentoo, all you have to do is run
emerge =python-3.6
and that's it! No other packages have to be fucked with. Gentoo package masks keep packages from automatically moving to the latest version. If there's an ""update"", it's really just your package mask being modified to select the newer packages. But python 3.6 can easily be installed alongside GCC 3.4.6 and Gentoo will not give a flying fuck. You have to modify your package.unmask list in the portage directory in order to support the newer packages is all

So, despite the retarded Arch users on /g/ calling it a "meme", Gentoo is the opposite.
so Install Gentoo! Don't feel like compiling your own kernel? I recommend Calculate Linux, it still uses Gentoo's repositories but has a bloated kernel and a preset binhost.

I never understood it, especially given how expensive computers are. Why didn't people and developers gravitate towards getting terminals that hooked up to a single family machine, instead of everyone sharing one full terminal or everyone having their own machine. If you're going the second route just buy a thin client for everyone and a central machine. You only ever see that in businesses.

In some bussiness buying fat clients is even more cheaper than thin clients because scale economics.
Anyways, HaikuOS doesn't have permitions and multiuser because BeOS didn't support that shit at the time. At this time they only want to make a BeOS reimplementation.

HFS+ isn't bloat entirely because it's less of a filesystem than fucking FAT32. The fact that a replacement for HFS+ took so long is insane.
Also, you still end up needing to do a ton more config to get a nice unix environment in macOS than on Linux, and if you're using it strictly for the macOS side of things, you still end up installing like a dozen extensions/utilities (some paid) to work around shortcomings in the OS, like the inexplicable lack of a battery time meter or the default image viewer not playing animated gifs for no reason.

like, as someone who's used OSX since 10.1, and oldschool MacOS since System 7, it's always been a bit of a shitpile
really, the only reason I'll even boot macOS these days is because I get 2x the battery life

also,
>plan9
that's probably the biggest meme of them all

>>59109454
the answer is that computers got cheap and the user experience wasn't determined by how may other people were working at the same time
also, distributed failure points rather than singular ones -- compare how having a central machine going down interrupts work and then increases load heavily on the backup machines as everyone scrambles to get back to work vs one guy's machine going down not really interrupting anyone else

it's certainly easier to manage in a centralized system for large groups of users, which is why you see it in business frequently, but that's only with large groups of users, it's annoying as fuck for smaller teams
and we're at a point where even systems designed as "thin clients" can reasonably be used without ever hooking them up to a back end machine

in the early 90s there was a push for thin clients because desktop computers were still like $2000 a pop if you wanted a machine with any semblence of power, and then that died off because computer prices cratered -- even if it wasn't the nicest experience, you could stick $400 shitboxes at everyone's desktop and most of the people there didn't really need more than that
>>
>>59115950
default image viewer on window too doesn't play gifs. I really don't find these 2 things annoying. I do have to install utilities (3 of them lol) to make my non-Apple mouse function normally.
I think it's a small price to pay though. You get comfy desktop and Adobe/other creative programs and unix utilities that kinda work. No other os can do all 3.
Also fuck you, Plan 9 is the future.
