I only accept gaming laptops if you travel often for work and are out for long periods. My friend recently bought one since his job often has him travel out of country and out of state often, and he'd like to play games where he goes. That's the exception. Otherwise, they're kinda dumb but whatever.

Yeah, the new Alienwares are pretty fucking amazing.
4K display, GTX 1070 and an overclockable Quad Core on a 15" laptop is amazing. Yet it still lasts 5-8 hours on battery if you want to use it as a normal laptop. Same size and weight as /g/'s beloved Thinkpad T61p but with almost top of the range performance and decent battery life.

They are ugly because they go out of their way to make something flashy gimmick targeted towards children.

Multi colored keyboard back lighting is ugly.
Keyboard back lighting is atrocious to begin with, it doesn't matter where you are, the light you get from the ceiling light or a lamp will always be better. Most people doesn't look at their keyboard after they have used their laptop a while anyway.
They go for a "aggressive" design, Huge vents, multiple colors and huge logos.

And when they make a decent looking laptop, they don't market it as a gaming laptop, then it is just a workstation.

"Gaming" anything is the worst kind of meme people get dragged into.

I'd reckon it'd be approximately the same, she's talking unibody designs which are much more involved, you're talking a thin piece of sheet with a couple of tiny curves which takes half a second versus taking twenty and then the materials are way cheaper since you aren't milling or forming complicated shapes which require blocks or special alloy sheets to accommodate the pressing.
