the exact point why Google is making themselves a BSD or apache licensed OS.
GPL forces them to publish any changes made to Linux if they release the results. They probably want something like chrome: create a libre OS but release one based on it with added proprietary parts like drivers, firmware and botnet ofc.

But there's a bunch of other microkernel-based systems which are not dead.

Systems that are not using a fucking pre-Liedtke microkernel like the HURD.

Systems like Genode, Minix3, HelenOS, Google Fuchsia.
