Random question, but I don't know where else to ask. Maybe some one will know-

What's the standard US phone number format?
Like, there's a million formats and they all call the same number, but what's the actual format?

For example, I have a contact in my Outlook account, John Doe 1. His phone number is shown as +15555555555

I have another contact, Jane Doe, who's Contact is +1 (666) 666666

And some other guy, billy bob, his account could have the # (777) 777-777

I mean, dash, no dash, +1, no +1, parentheses, no parentheses, they all seem to work.

But if they are all used by people in the first place, then what's the actual format and proper usage of them?

This doesn't seem normal at all.

Originally I thought this was a router issue but I checked some other downstairs computers and they looked way more stable than this. Maybe I'm an idiot or something, but I've only started having this issue since last week and now I lose internet connection very briefly for 4-5 seconds before it comes back. Streams tend to cut out a bunch too.

What gives?

As touristing goes, yes. Legally, states are to recognize virtually all contracts excluding Law licenses, medicine licenses, and a few other things...but If in the example you gave, you go to texas, under ordinary circumstances Texas will legally recognize all permissions you had in California such as a temporary drivers license, or car rent contract, or whatever.

Is there an idiot's guide to setting up/using TOR?

Not trying to do anything too out there, I just need to make a facebook account for something and want my usage of the site to be isolated to a separate browser that FB can't track me from.

>just use FF with noscript, self destructiong cookies and umatrix

I already use that as my normal browser, though I had to remove umatrix since it makes basically every web page unsable and unike noscript is all or nothing, thoug even with noscript I end up having to enable almost everything anyways just to get the bare minimum functionality.

Which sort of defeats the point, doesn't it?

Not enough information.

Try to isolate your diagnostics to one piece of the network at a time. Ie, can you reproduce when transferring just between the router and your computer? If so, the problem is between those. If not, it's on the router, between the router and the ISP, or beyond the ISP. Check your cables, router ports, router software, call the ISP. If it's beyond the ISP, there's nothing you can do but hope the ISP fixes their peering agreements or whatever
>>
>>59092111
Also look at basic metrics like packet loss, and try simple diagnostic techniques like swapping out the cable.

I recently went to a programming challenge offered at my uni, one of the questions was this:

Given some number of pegs, write a program that calculates the maximum number of balls that you can place on those pegs given the following rules:
-A ball can only be placed if it either forms a perfect square with the ball underneath it, or it is the first ball on a peg
-Ball must be placed in order, from 1 to n. n being the highest possible ball that could be placed given a number of P pegs.

Write a program that returns the maximum number of balls place-able given P pegs. For example, 4 pegs would give the output
10
6 9 11
3 7 5
1 2 4 8

should return 11, since 11 is the highest number that can be placed.

Your code should return -1 if an infinite amount of balls can be placed...

OKAY: That was the problem we were given. Now, correct me if I'm wrong, bug detecting that an infinite amount of balls are place-able is actually just a clever way of trying to trick people with the Halting problem, right? It would be impossible to detect that a infinite amount of balls are place-able, unless you could form a formal proof that was some kind of upper limit, correct? Essentially, determining if you're stuck in an infinite loop is just a trick. Or is there some realistic way of doing this? Other than just making the program run for 1000000 iterations or something fucking retarded like that.

Is there a decent 32-37" 1080p TV out there with four or more HDMI ports that hasn't been discontinued?
>>
>>59093047
I don't think you're meant to brute force it. You're probably meant to devise some rules to determine the maximum perfect square x^2 that can be formed with y pegs, and then work backward from there, or something like that.

I have a 6th gen iPod Classic (160 GB model) with Rockbox installed. Everything worked fine until a few weeks ago when I would get random skips in songs. It only happened sporadically with certain songs at first but I am pretty sure it's getting worse.
>buy new CD
>rip to wav
>convert to 320 kbps ogg
>plays fine on computer
>copy to iPod
>properly dismount before disconnecting
>go to bed
>next day
>battery charge 30% (should be enough for a couple hours of playback)
>play on iPod
>skips every ~20 seconds on the first song, sometimes more often
>skips within 2 seconds of second song
>device unresponsive, can't pause, can't go back to menu
>hold menu+okay to reboot
>battery charge reported as 0%, shuts down immediately
>boot again
>immediate shutdown
>boot again
>battery charge goes up to 15%
>start playback
>rinse and repeat
Is it the files? Hard drive? Battery? Rockbox being a cunt about ogg files?

I want to pick a good general purpose programming language that I can always use when I need or want to do some project be it for work, research or fun (a game, physics/life simulation). I want it to be fast, because I'll also be doing some ML and data analysis. I programmed sporadically during the last decade for school and uni and I was quite good with these low-level projects, but I'm pretty ignorant. I decided on C# as I figured it might be a good compromise between speed and modernity. Is it? (I'm clueless) And is it a good pick or would you recommend something else.

Also I think it's possible to write a program in C# and then write some speed-critical parts in C++. Could near C++ performance be reached this way? If yes, then how does one go about it, i.e. what tool to use to create a two-language program?

Update: I plugged the iPod into my PC and played the songs from the iPod. Prior to plugging it in the battery charge read 70+%. No skips, but I get random freezes in the playback (using mpv).
I checked that playback of the local files on the PC works fine (it does) and copied them to the iPod again. Without unplugging the iPod, I started to play back the new copies on the iPod and everything was fine.
Unmounted, unplugged, started playback on iPod... Skip within 5 seconds. Plug into PC, start playback... Freeze within 2 seconds.

>>
>>59094613
Is it a requirement to use MATLAB? There are a couple differences between MATLAB and GNU Octave which is annoying.
If the prof can be persuaded to accept Octave scripts, try to do that. It's gratis, it's free, there are only minor differences that have no impact on the way your program works algorithmically.
Otherwise I'd say dual boot if you have the time to reinstall your GNU/Linux because you'll likely have to use Windows-only programs several times at uni and this way you sidestep virtualization issues that might come up when using VMs. If you're close to graduating and don't plan on using Windows again, make a VM.

doesn't mean shit if you don't use flash and chances that you don't use it is high, as jewtube defaults HTML5 now.

There is an addon "youtube flash player" for FF and chrome variants, which forces flash: try that.

Java doesn't have explicit optional parameter syntax, instead use method overloading:

void doMethod() {
doMethod(null);
}

void doMethod( Integer i) {
if( i == null) {
// The user either called doMethod without a parameter or called
// with null, which should probably behave the same.
}
}

My speakers have very high output volume. The volume knob on my amplifier is therefore very sensitive and I only use the bottom 10% of it. I can lower my system volume to about 30% in order to use the volume knob more accurately but this brings up the noise floor (hum/buzz). Is there a way to bring my system volume up so that the noise floor is as low as possible but have less sensitivity on my amplifier? Pic related is my amp. Thank you /g/

I would but there's no volume display so I can't see the volume, it takes longer to change and is less convenient. If you turn down the volume knob, the amp outputs less power. You might as well use a "smaller" amp and crank that. The speakers won't know the difference.
I refuse to believe there are people this stupid. If you are baiting, you got me good.
>>
>>59097377
Cunt.
>>
>>59097377
Buying a powerful amp doesn't make me stupid. It works very well and I can utilise higher volumes. I'm not the only person in the world who bought a 50 watt amp for these speakers. Nothing bad happened, I've had them for years, I just want the knob to be less sensitive so I can turn my system up so that noise is minimised.
>>
>>59097417
Since you obviously don't understand even the most basic concepts of electronics, my suggestion is this: Buy a 5 or 10W amp.

"Sensitivity of 84dB is low against recent designs, and a minimum of a 60 Watt amplifier is needed for decent volume, partly because of an unusually high measured impedance of 9 Ohms. The Usher S-520s need more power than rivals"

"if you have a larger bedroom, and you listen from 3-5 meters away, a 50 watter may be more appropriate."
>>
>>59097501
Learn what power, voltage, current and resistance are. Stop believing audiophile broscience.
Also those articles are talking about power requirements for decent volume. Since you feel like your amp is too loud, and you're not using 90% of the range, you might as well get one with a lower power output.

>Also those articles are talking about power requirements for decent volume
Why the fuck would I not use decent volume. I make music, I need loudness (and quietness, hence my question in the first place). This is a stupid question thread you realise? Relax on the tech snobbery
>>
>>59097619
Any modification you could do to the amp is likely beyond your skills, therefore your best option is to buy a cheap quieter amp.

Energy loss, anon. Your modem has lots of microelectrical components with internal resistances. When current runs through them, these resistances cause voltage drops across them, and heat gets radiated out as a result. Since there is no active cooling in the smaller shittier modems, they are just designed to get hot and radiate heat.

See pic related if you get sick of the heat.

>>
>>59099217
html is a document format.
You can use any kind of elements in this document.
It could looks something like:
<h2>
title
</h2>

To access these elements, you use the tag name (or even better the class name or the ID)
You then get an array (a sequence of all the results).
Each element can then be accessed by the index number (starting at 0).
>>

You could always buy a network card or an external usb device to see if the onboard ports/wifi is bad.

It's not the wifi card that's the problem and it doesn't really matter if it's built in, just found it weird that the ethernet port is soldered.

Kinda unrelated, but i got pic related for 30 bucks from my workplace, the ram alone should be enough to make up for it, but how much could i make if i sold it, either piece by piece or as a whole?

Good deal. With the raid and the i7 you might get $200 on ebay if you had an account with good feedback. Maybe $150 on craigslist if you're lucky

Debating between a 6700T and a 7700T
Are baby features + 8% better performance worth it? I'm upgrading from a 3570K for TDP and motherboard feature reasons, planning on using the Strix Z270I and filling both m.2 slots.

Does kaby even have notable features other than the 4K playback thing + USB-C stuff?

Is it typical for lossy codecs to sound brighter than lossless sources? I've done some extensive A-B testing of a few tracks I'm familiar with (MP3-320 vs FLAC) and it's clear that the MP3 files have ever so slightly more treble.
>>
>>59102276
some lossy codecs can introduce artifacts which may be misinterpreted as being part of the source when it's not, which is arguably a positive property (better it sound intended than out of place)
>>
>>59102276
>brighter
You don't have the equipment or the hearing capabilities to hear differences from mp3 320 and flac.
It's placebo

What's the frequency cut on a 320 mp3?
Like, 18khz or something like that?
It's still in the real of possibilities but of so little importance that you don't even have to bother.
The highest frequency 20-something men can hear is like 18-20 khz and it goes down to like 12khz when you get to your forties.
Even if you sense a difference, you probably won't even be able to in a few years.

>>59102673
You mean like GPU/wifi drivers?
You're better off downloading the installers on the manufacturer website.
If you need to clone OS and drivers on technically identical machines that's another kind of work

Don't bother. If you have a smartphone from the current century you can easily plug a USB cable into your computer and turn on USB tethering, and then download the drivers. USB tethering has worked with no drivers on every OS I've tried it in.

Pretty sure my android is fucked, just wondering if anyone else has had this issue.
My phone basically freezes if i try to go the app settings for any app. Sometimes it takes a minute or two and then pulls up the settings, and sometimes if i try to go to the settings for another app it will load right and i can hit the back button to go to the first apps settings. Usually it just doesnt work though, and i have to hit my home button to unfreeze it. Any chance a reset would help, or is the phone fucked?
>>
Weird question ahead

Let's say I have a motherboard

That I replace with another motherboard of the same exact chipset, with minor differences, including the brand (MSI to ASUS for instance). No drivers downloaded for it other than the ones through Windows update.

Would I have to reinstall the OS? I'm curious.

just run sysprep/generalize before swapping to be safe
doing so will let windows adjust to even a complete hardware change

Got home and benched my CPU single core performance, got a 147
Numbers I saw were 154 for the 6700T and 168 for the 7700T
So while the gain to the 6700T is negligible the extra cost for kaby isn't worth it.

6700T it is

Windows would still need to do a repair, but it would probably succeed. The mobo will have some differences in the underlying drivers, like audio. Also you'll need to reactivate windows.

Given that Android is FREE and based on Linux you certainly should be able to download the source, tailor it to your taste, and compile it on the system of your choice.

They're an option that not many people need. Exceeding sata 3 speeds for storage won't make an observable difference for most applications. It's certainly not as impactful as the jump from HDD to SSD. In a few years it might be more worth while.

you don't
.lnk files are only relevant to explorer and not much else
you can cd into an actual symlink, though

That's basically what all open roms are, with the limitation that most devices are proprietary as fuck, so you're often forced to use most or all of the OS manufacturers put out for a given device

Brute forcing it is actually probably the simplest way to do it, considering it's not really a very computationally expensive problem to take that approach with.

The question I'm asking is not about the approach that you're supposed to solve the problem with. The question I'm asking is about determining if you're stuck, which is kind of a red-herring in the scheme of the question.

It actually turns out there is no P where you can place an infinite number of balls, so trying to determine some kind of lower limit isn't even possible... essentially, you could never write this program to return -1.

Or is my logic totally fucked here?
