Should getters and setters be used even when in the same class as the variable you want to use?

Or should they only be needed when calling a class's variable from outside the class, and when in that class you should call the variables normally?
>>
>>59080304
They both use some non libre stuff, but chromium has a history of crossing some uncomfortable lines with how much it communicates with google. Also its windows version has no automatic updates. Chrome is the defacto browser if you absolutely want to make sure none of your webpages are fucking up because of browser compatibility, but you lose that assurance when you run chromium, so you might as well go FF.

Go look up the basic data structures (array, linked list, queue, tree, stack), some object oriented programming concepts (classes, objects, inheritance). Look up pointers and try and actually understand what they are (they aren't particularly difficult to grasp on a general level, but you probably won't understand why they're useful for quite a while.)

Maybe look up some general algorithms as well, probably some sorting ones like bubble sort, selection sort, binary sort. No need to memorise them or anything like that, just see if you can understand what's going on.

Don't worry too much, you'll learn all this shit on your course, but having a general understanding should help you to not feel overwhelmed.
>>
>>59080418
>Should getters and setters be used even when in the same class as the variable you want to use?
sure, why not. besides, that's the whole point of encapsulation. you hide data fields, normally declared private anyways, behind public methods.

Is a gtx 1080 too overkill for 1080p? I've never been to bothered all that much by visuals but choppy low frame rates bother the shit out of me. Would a 1080 be able to maintain 120+FPS on most games on a 1440p display or perhaps a gtx 1070 would suffice for 1080p?

I'll probably be a poor student in the next few years so 1080/1080 seems liked like a good idea.

Thoughts?

I was about to do that, but then I saw that a 4 pack of them is about as much as a 48 pack of regular batteries. I have my PC set up to a 5.1 A/V receiver. Recently I've noticed that at high volumes, there's some very quiet noise underneath whatever sounds I'm playing. I'm using a Creative brand PCI express sound card.

It's much worse when my GPU is active such as while playing WoW. However, I figured it was because I was using analog outputs and figured that this was electrical noise, but when I use an encoder like DTS Live, the signal that reaches my receiver includes this noise.

Is there any hope for getting rid of the noise, or should I just learn to live with it? I can use stereo over optical, but occasionally I would like to listen to 5.1 sources.

the lower end models are absolute trash. like theyve always had shit build but comparing it to my 2002 and 2007 hps, its even worse (trending down). their top of the line ones are alright but not worth the price or money. I think theyre targeting 50 year old rich women with them.

Your CPU does that because it's Firefox running present day web shit stacks. Using a CPU does not damage it. They're specifically designed to not self destruct when used. A GPU card is needed only if you want more monitors.

Basically I want to call a method to start combat in the Combat class, but I need information about the character(s) which are obviously in the Character class.
I thought the point of getters and setters and public methods in general was that those were the interfaces for other classes?

Network Attached Storage.

Usually in home configurations, a low-end PC running all your spare hard drives and sharing files over a network.
>>
>>59082718
In order to call any non-static non-global function, you need a reference to the object you want to call the function of.

If you want your your combat class to have access to your characters, pass them to whatever function you'd like.

void doCombat(Character c1, Character c2) {
c2.setHealth(c2.getHealth() - c1.getDamage());
}

Sup /g/.

I have some motherboard that I fucking broke by flashing a modded BIOS like a retard. Thing is, the bios chip ain't soldered to it, can be easily extracted and put back in.

about 5 per Gb, so 200.

Maybe closer to 20 if they're all SSD. But really, you're going to bump the limit of your PCIe bus before you saturate a 40gb switch.
>>
>>59082770
So for functional concepts like combat, would it be better to make the whole class static?
>>
>>59082844
No. What would make sense is having a CombatResolver that has functions capable of resolving fights. You make one of these combat resolvers in your surrounding game class (or whatever you have controlling the program). Heck, if you really, really want to be able to globally refer to it, you can always make an instance of that class global.

Question is, would a 64 bit version of Windows for it be a bad choice? I mean, they wouldn't put a 32 bit version of it for no reason at all with its processor, right? Maybe 2GB of RAM aren't good enough for the 64 bit version of windows?

It's something I've wanted for a very long time

it isn't really necessary but just a neat feature i guess

Imagine:
void something(int x, y, z)

Instead of:
void something(int x, int y, int z)

and for a larger example
void something(int x, y, z, uint8_t r, g, b, a);

instead of
void something(int x, int y, int z, uint8_t r, uint8_t g, uint8_t b, uint8_t a);

so basically it just uses the next type specified

Hey /sqt/ have a SQL question regarding foreign keys.

Suppose we have a composite foreign key spread over 2 columns mapped to a table with a 2 column PK. Dual Link refers to the number of pins for the digital DVI-D connection. It doesn't have anything to say about whether it's a DVI-I port, which includes the analog functionality. But nearly every GPU has a DVI-I port on it.

>>59085831
Modern OSes allocate unused RAM to things it think might need it in the future to make things more responsive. It should be reclaimed as soon as you actually need it for something. So having a high idle usage isn't necessarily a big deal as long as you aren't coming up short when you actually need it for something.

I just loaded up a game and tabbed out, and that specific svchost and the antimalware service are using more memory now. But that only brought it up to 4.3GB total, so I guess that's fine then, thanks. Was just concerned because it hadn't been that high in the past.

It's possible that your motherboard doesn't support drives that large, but can be flashed to do so.

If it has an IDE port then I think it should be able to handle any hard drive connected to that port (even if you have to use a SATA to IDE adapter) regardless of size. Some older operating systems do limit the maximum usable space to less than that though.

If it's got something older than IDE (honestly not sure what they used before this) then good chance it's not compatible, but I wouldn't really know.

Do I have to know this? JavaScript is fucking painful and I don't have any other options.
>>
>>59086851
JavaScript is used by a LOT of companies, mainly because it can be used both in the backend (node) and in the frontend.

Just give it a try, it's fairly straightforward. You can skip it I guess, but you'll be seen as "lacking" by most companies.

Pointers are slow because the code can't be vectorized, right?

Is the performance penalty going from one dereference to two significantly less than going from zero to one?

Once we accept stuff is behind at least a pointer does it really matter how many pointers it's behind (within reason).
>>
>>59087516
Pointer dereference is nigh-instantaneous. It's literally a single processor operation. So no, it typically doesn't matter.

The reason using them is slower than not using them is because pointer-memory is allocated on the heap, while non-pointers are automatically stack-allocated.
>>
>>59087585
Well how long a pointer dereference takes depends on whether that data is in the cache or not right?

That's why arrays can be so quick. Because they garruntee cache locality no?

I mean, i can do it, but if someone already knows how to do it as quick as possible then i'll hapilly take it.

>>59089729
I have the capacity to take all the data, but not to take the entire partition (it has programs and shits)

Now that i think about it, a cloud system could take everything. But how could i go about doing that? si there a service out there that just uploads everything?

For some reason, my computer is saying it's connected to my router through Ethernet, but it's connected by wifi. This is what the router is saying. Because of that (I assume here, I know nothing about networking) my router is blacklisting IP's across the board from my computer only. It says it's disconnecting and reconnecting over and over with different IPs and I don't have a clue what's going on. Can anyone help me?

True. I'm on a GTX 770 and 3570K system at the moment which performs quite well, but I'm looking to upgrade in the near future. Looking forward to it.

if that doesn't work I would think of getting a free file manager online that would do it.

I would also be very careful about installing them because sometimes they include stupid shit which you have to uncheck while installing.

Non-meme, get a Thinkpad W520. It's a little heavy, but as an EE you will be spending most of your time at a desk in the library/home/your engineering building. If it's a good program, you will be using it mainly for programming/simulation/ect, and the keyboard is absolutely fantastic. I'm a CE (my school had an ECE department, and I took a lot of semiconductor physics/manufacturing courses) and I got one and would recommend to almost anyone.

How the fuck do most email providers manage to screw up SMTP Banner Check?

You literally just put the reverse DNS of your mail server's ip into the hostname of main.cf if I recall correctly.

Say torrents are illegal in X country, but I live in Y country. I don't want my IP exposed so I use a VPN to connect to a server located in X country.

Are VPN providers who, I guess, "take the bullet" for you? Do they constantly deal with lawsuits and shit for having their servers used for torrenting and other nasty stuff?

you are supposed to fully dry it out BEFORE turning it on anon
the water causes short-circuits, which will damage the phone if/when electricity flows through them

which is why when the phone gets wet you immediately TAKE OUT THE BATTERY and don't put it back until the inside of the phone is completely dry

if you turned it on while it wasn't fully dry the damage is already done

I have this bizarre effect in Ubuntu where moving the mouse below a certain Y coordinate on the monitor makes it vanish until I move it back up.

Finally going to make the purchase for a 250 gb ssd. Does brand matter much?

Also, I just want Windows 10 on it. I currently have an Ubuntu partition on my pc so if I back up and transfer to the ssd, I'll be without a boot manager. I also don't have a disc drive. Is this some complex situation or is there a bootable ISO for windows and will it delete everything

hello /sqt/

I want to build a HTPC with the new Ryzen APU's that should come later this year.
I want to do some game emulation with it. Will an APU be enough to run pas generations console emulators at decent quality?

I've heard that AMD is bad for emulation, is this true or is it just a meme?

This doesn't seem normal at all.

Originally I thought this was a router issue but I checked some other downstairs computers and they looked way more stable than this. Maybe I'm an idiot or something, but I've only started having this issue since last week and now I lose internet connection very briefly for 4-5 seconds before it comes back. Streams tend to cut out a bunch too. There's a stable 8-10 Kbps here.

What gives?
