Depending what type of cpu got the Sandy Bridge years, you should at least go Ivy Bridge or at best Haswell

People are using i5:s for gaming. This is almost equal in single-core and still wrecks in multi-core.

The only reason I'd upgrade is for even better multi-core power, but I don't think I'd benefit enough from extra cores for Reaper, Sai, Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign to warrant a costly upgrade.

>>

Dude the fuck are you talking about, every intel socket is different, there's no way to upgrade past sandybridge if you have a sandybridge CPU
>>
>>59073028
I am still on a 2500K, and very unlikely to upgrade until it breaks or becomes unusable.

That said, I definitely want to see Ryzen be successful, and bring about a more competitive AMD. Monopolies are horrendous for consumers. If you support Intel, you will want Ryzen to succeed too: Competition brings better improvement.
>>
>>59076224

Ughhh fan boys... when will they learn.

also Ryzen people have been waiting for fucking ages for their cpu's let them have some dignity and pride.

>>
>>59076910
Dude. Third party reviewers have already leaked that they've hit new world records in CineBench R15 with Ryzen overclocking.

When the embargo is lifted, it's only going to confirm everything we already know. Best price/performance/thermals across the board. Unlocked overclocking.

Only thing lacking right now are good motherboard compatibility lists and third-party HSF brackets.
>>
>>59077107

>>

>>
i7-2640m laptop here, wish I did have a Kaby Lake machine at this point but the pricing on that stuff at this moment is just not worth it and the only aspects I care about are power efficiency more than anything else.

As for Ryzen, sorry, just not a fan of AMD. I have built AMD-based systems in the past and they worked fine for their intended design purposes, but I myself have never really used one as a daily runner, been an Intel fan and user since the 1970s and that's not going to change anytime soon.

I don't care if the pricing on Ryzen is competitive or that some of their processors may actually outperform Intel ones of the same/similar clock speed, I care about everything all together and not just one spec so that means Intel will remain my processor of choice for pretty much as long as I'll be using computers and Intel lasts (that's forever afaic).
>>
My 2500k is still kicking, but it's now in my mother's computer. I decided to upgrade to Skylake for three reasons:

1. My mom needed a new computer anyway.
2. There's no guarantee that future processors will still support Windows 7.
3. I am now unemployed and have no idea if I will have the money to upgrade my system in another few years.
>>
You guys think sandy is bad, I'm still running a phenom ii dual core that has survived 3 years at 1.6 volts. I was hoping that it would die when ryzen came out, but it still runs.
>>
>>59073028

Still running an i5-2400 and no urge to upgrade at all. LineageOS rebuilds in 10 min.
>>
2500k @ 4.1GHz here (because for some reason my BIOS can't do more than that good job MSI :---DDDD)

It's fine for everything I do except high bitrate H264 and it can't do HEVC

I can kind of compensate high bitrate H264 with GPU decoding but for HEVC you need a pretty fucking new GPU so I'm not gonna bother

I said to myself I'll only upgrade if anything in my setup seriously inhibits my workflow (right now it really does not, I just can't watch ebin 4k 60fps 10bit tech demos) or if something outright breaks.

I was under the impression my mobo would give up much sooner but it's already going almost 6 years and everything works (except OC'ing past 4.1GHz REEEEEE)
>>

2500k + GTX 770 here, I see no reason to upgrade right now. Full HD is still a good enough resolution for me, and I don't want to jump on the 4K bandwagon yet. I like my higher refresh rates.

Same only I need to upgrade because my motherboard is dying slowly.
I can only run my 2 RAM sticks in single channel mode and running it any higher than 1333MHz causes it to crash when it was fine up to 2133 up to a few months ago.
>>
>>59077897
>Used hardware

No thanks. I only do it when I'm desperate and have no other choice ie: building a nice cute m-itx build for my bad using my old parts - took me weeks to hunt down a good mobo at a reasonable price.

>>59077902
I wouldn't touch AMD with a stick after they fucked me over twice on their GPUs.

>Just RMA it

I did but that's not the point. Those fucking weeks of annoyance I had to go through just so I can get a card that isn't fucked up on hardware level just so I can discover it's still bad on software level just ain't worth it.

They fully test everything they sell and give you a 24 month warranty. Which is 12 months more than you get when buying new.
>>
>>59077914
Mah nigga!

I bought all my parts used, I really despise the ASRock board I'm using though, but it's still good enough. Newer generations honestly only give incremental speed upgrades.

The only worthwhile upgrade I can think of would be adding another GPU, but you can get a used 770 for less than $80 now.
>>
>>59077955
Still I just checked CEX and the cheapest 6700k I've seen costs £280 but like I said I have no clue about their inner workings.
>>
>>59077947
Well that'll do it.
40Mbps 1080p is using up like 50% of my CPU in MPC i can only imagine how bad it gets at 4k.
>>
>>59077966
They must have put prices up recently, I bought mine about 5 weeks ago for £235.

They are really good though, I have bought loads of stuff from them and never had a problem with any of it. But they do give you a 24 month warranty on everything and will replace or repair or refund you on anything that breaks.
>>
>>59077931
>I wouldn't touch AMD with a stick after they fucked me over twice on their GPUs.
Even then, you could wait for Intel's response before jumping on old hardware, kinda retarded in my opinion.
>>
>>59078001
Meh, it was a 500 quid upgrade which considering my earnings is slightly less than my weekly paycheck. I will manage and I sure do fucking love this cpu.
>>
>>59077959
Yeah 770s are cheap but my case fans cant handle the heat from my one GPU at the moment. My HDD got up to 47 degrees the last time i played a game and that's not healthy.
Plus if i can sell mine for around $80 the actual amount of money i'd have to spend to get a new card is lower. brings a 3GB 1060 down to a little over $100 and a 6GB to ~$150
Not bad for a jump in performance of almost 2x

3570K at 4.5Ghz on a hyper 212.

I don't know how to push it further though.
AIOs seem to be a meme and too poor for custom water. Maybe ill just replace the stock 212 fans with ML120s or Noctuas and hope for the best.

Got pretty lucky with my 2500k
>>
2500K at 4.8GHz here. Amazing how a 6 year old CPU is still relevant, but it's about time I upgraded to Ryzen
>>
>>59073028
I have the 2600K, its been only within this year (anno domini 2017) that from time to time in some games (planetside 2) i oc to 4ghz.
Years ago i oc'ed to 4.8ghz with a cm v6gt and benched several times, i believe it can still go higher but im only going to do crazy shit when i have money in my pocket to replace everything when it gets engulfed in a sea of flames, like it should be.
>>
>>59073028

AMD made a better product than the last one they had, Ryzen is a good product.

On the other hand, Intel have been churning out new chipsets and cpu with meme upgrades and pointless performance. They made it look like it was relevant when it was just a marketing ploy.

I don't want to buy Intel again, i'm tired of this bullshit. They make good stuff but they treat consumers like retards. OC on K cpu only ? need a topline mmobo to OC ? that's not the point of OC you corporrate loosers.
>>
>>59080965
Intel is the reason we've seen process size drop. They don't want NEETs OCing their product and giving them a bad name for everything outside of gaymen, like AMD.
>>
IT/g/: YOU ARE ALL FALLING FOR THE RYZEN MEME.

Release day will bring "fell for the meme" posts, Ryzen underperformance and failures. The Ryzen hype will shill into itself, and Intel will remain on top because we were given this level of performance in 2012 and it's only gotten better from there. Screencap this post.
>>
>>59081284
Like honestly, what do you get out of this kind of shitposting?
Do you get payed for it?
Last time you bought a cpu you were thinking "uhm ey intel i think i didnt give you enough money, here, empty my pockets so i can be complete"?
Why?
>>
>>59073043

I don't know. I still have the i5 750 and hd 7750 (lol!)
but surprisingly enough i've played GtaV and xcom at medium settings just fine.

I'm tempted to buy a new pc,but i've seen interesting results combining the 750 and a new graphic card.

i'm also tempted to have fun with my current setup and buy a new modern gtx 1060 or rx480, overclock my pc and upgrading cpu to an i7 8xx,experiencing the wonders of potential bottlenecking.

Well, that's certainly true, but Ryzen has nothing to with it.

The reason nobody needs to upgrade from Sandy Bridge yet is because the CPU industry's performance improvements have come to a screeching halt.

Every year since Sandy Bridge (2011) has been a bitter disappointment for performance gains.

Normally, I don't bother upgrading my CPU until I can get one that's twice as fast on single-threaded workloads for the same money. As of today, the very fastest CPU for single-threaded performance (7700K) beats my CPU (3770K) by 24%. That's 5 fucking years for a 24% improvement. At this pace, I'm looking at waiting until about 2027 for a processor that's twice as fast as mine single-threaded.

I still have an i7 Sandy Bridge on a laptop and it works admirably. I literally use it as the central processing with a 24'' and a mechanical keyboard in the office for years. For a Desktop I bought a 4790K and I never saw it being worse enough than anything that exists on single thread on 2-3 threads I usually need to even consider replacing.
The silicon tech is simply at its last breath. It's hard to shrink the transistor. We'll soon even start hitting quantum mechanical limits.

I still use an i5 2500k from 2011 and a 770gtx and do just fine. Only downside if you can call it one because I don't think it matters performance wise for my card but my motherboard doesn't have pci-e 3. You know as long as I can do stuff in HD it really isnt a big deal for me for now.

2011 X220 here, it's a mobile i5 sandybridge. The plastic case has chipped away in places from being tossed in a college backpack, and I've had to replace the battery once the original one got to like 20% of original capacity. Gonna replace the screen since it's got some dead pixels now, and might refresh the thermal paste on the CPU while I'm at it.

Windows 7 until Linux comes up with a filepicker that shows thumbnails for fuck's sake.
