Of course I can hear when a sound is coming from behind me, because when sound goes around the back of your ears, it has a very specific and well-understood effect on the sound. But you can simulate that effect in a 2.0 channel setup by pre-applying that effect to the sound during the recording/production process. If you have a good stereo, sounds that come from in front of you can sound like they're coming from behind you.
