Google did catch up but they rely heavily on HDR+. Very computationally intensive compared to most. They had to use Hexagon to make it reasonably fast.

Because point and shoot cameras are dead. When was the last time you've seen someone use one? The vast majority solely use their cell phone for pictures. Enthusiasts use DSLRs.
