They're basically worthless. The problem is that you can just run Kodi on an old laptop and play literally any codec. With roku you have limited codec support and it's just a slow, limited shitpile in general. Rokus and similar products are just a way for companies to sell low-end smartphones with no screens to dumb consumers.
