In regular mode it is slightly less secure as it connects to strangers and they can possible deanonymize you. In darknet mode you only directly connect to users that you specify that you trust. If these users are trustworthy then you can't be be deanonymized.

Depending on the attack scenario I'd say it's about as secure as tor, maybe even more secure.

It is as it is only a possibility to deanonymize you. It requires specifically targeting you and watching traffic coming from you for a while to try and determine what comes from you and what comes from others. Most likely this attack won't be used against you unless you are consistently accessing cp or the police have some other reason for suspecting you. If you only use it occasionally then you are fine.
