All this autism aside, I just bought pic related
I normally hate citizen but this is steel (as opposed to the Casio AQ series that's chromed plastic) and the module for the digital bit has a backlight

Not sure how I feel about the non-centralized seconds (maybe it is who knows) but it seemed like it was worth it since it's only like 50 bucks more than the AQ. ($70)
Did I fuck up?

I prefer the Casio myself.
But I don't think you fucked up, if you like it, you like it.
>>
>>59038575
Alright, so what you're saying is "cosc certification" was used as an "exaggeration."

How fucking stupid is that? Is this really what /g/ has become? Why don't we take another technical standard, like 802.11ac. And when someone says something about 802.11ac that's wrong they'll claim it was an "exaggeration" and really just meant an older standard like 802.11g?

Saying "this is within thin standard" is not an exaggeration, it's either correct or it's wrong.

This is similar anyone misunderstanding what an object is in programing, or not understanding how communication protocols like fiberchannel or ethernet are not tied to a specific cable type like twisted pair or fiber optics.

This is a basic, technical misunderstanding on a technology board. You do not know what the word "exaggeration" means.
>>
>>59038723
Sylistically I think I like the Casio more too (more squarish) but the citizen is actually steel and the module has backlighting. Blued hands are cool too, but they might be too short.

I actually just "inherited" my grandfather's watch (asked grandma about it and she gave it to me) which is a similar Citizen Ana-Digi from 1982, the year he turned 50.

The pushers don't work and the bracelet is pretty broken, but I might get it fixed eventually since it has sentimental value and looks pretty cool. The dial is white and slightly sunburst.

Hows the bracelet, does it pinch hairs? Too bad it doesnt work, you could have confirmed for me if it has centralized seconds or not
>>
>>59038935
Yeah, it's exactly the type that pinches your hairs. The end links on mine are completely wrecked though, since the old man used the watch for over 25 years before kicking the bucket.

Dunno yet if I will try to find a new bracelet or stick it on a bloody NATO though.
>>
>>59039055
From the pictures I could find online the bracelet looks at least twice as thick as the casio hair pullers
Clasp looks a lot better as well
This is probably an asian market only watch since I can only find listings of it off weird thai sites, and ebay of course.

The old timex in the upper right (without the band) has some sentimental value to me, but I don't think it works. When I shake the shit out of it it'll tick for 15 seconds, the kind of tickticktick many times a second. Its not loud or obtrusive, its kinda calming that something complex is on a wrist whirring away.

I know its borderline obsolete technology, probably finicky and requiring a thousand times more maintenance than a quarts, but thats part of the charm I suppose. That and many automatics seem to have superior styling.

They're pretty much set and forget. Depending on the accuracy, you set it weekly, or monthly.

>requiring a thousand times more maintenance than a quarts
Any watch you want to keep real long term (rest of your life, pass onto next generation) should be serviced every 5 years or more frequently.
>>
>>59044663
>They're pretty much set and forget. Depending on the accuracy, you set it weekly, or monthly.

except for the fact it's not perpetual calendar and will show you the wrong day of the month about half the months of the year, so you can't really set and forget it, you have to set it and remember to fix the date every other month
>>
>>59044733
Did you notice where I said monthly? That would be for non-annual calendar watches. The weekly would be for cheaper less accurate watches that you might want to adjust other than on the first of the month like your slav watches or maybe a seiko 5.

And when it comes to minor adjustments, if your watch is running fast (preferable to slow) and you can hack it, you just pull the crown for the number of seconds required to re-sync it and then push the crown back in.

When someone brags that their Rolex "keeps to within 2 seconds a week" does that count for all the different storing positions?

Because if they just laid their watch flat on a table for a week, and it kept to within 2 seconds a week that's impressive.

But if it lost seconds the first day, and then they positioned it in a way so it gains those seconds back and kept adjusting throughout the week, that's not very impressive.

Unless you're down Simply Sausages every Saturday then it doesn't matter how much power your car has, in the end so long as it doesn't empty it's petrol tank on the way to work that's all that matters.

Don't confuse the Seiko spec with how any individual example of the 6r15c will perform.

The spec is so wide because Seiko does not individually adjust and regulate 6r15c movements at the factory, and the wide spec minimizes warranty claims that could result from that.

The overwhelming majority of 6r15c movements run much better than spec, and most can be regulated by the end user or a watchmaker to run within +/- 5 s/d.

But it's pretty cool. Very easy to read to 5 mins accuracy, which is good enough if you're wearing it.
As for accuracy, it seemed to be at least to the same minute after 24hrs, which is good enough for me as I won't wear it more than one day at a time here and there.

I've read some reviews online that state the sapphire crystal "sterilises" the look, but I don't really know what that means and it seems like bullshit talk when people say a car has "soul and passion".

Yes, If you want to operate them you got to be damn sure you want to press them. You're moving all those levers so they take a good push.

Oh yeah one more thing, there is no manufacturers warranty. Seagull don't make this watch anymore and don't warranty it.

Your warranty is with wherever you bought the watch from. Watchunique offers 1 year warranty where they will replace the watch if it breaks.

Being such a cheap watch i'm also aware that I've resigned myself to paying what the watch is worth every 5 years to have it serviced.

But hey maybe it will go up in value? It's no longer produced but when it was millions were made.

Contrary to what many people may think, Bulova makes good watches, with excellent finishing for the price if you can find them on sale. Their bracelets are also excellent, with a butterfly clasp and a nice sleek satin/polished finishing. They also have beautiful dials with great dimension, the indices are applied and nicely finished. Regardless of what people say, they are generally good watches. I would say the finishing on Bulova watches beats any Citizen, and is just as good, as JDM Seikos like the SARB 035 or Presage line, of which I own a few of too.

1. Is it worth replacing the battery?
2. Is it something I can do?
3. If not, what's the avg price for replacing the battery if I take it to a store.

>JDM Seiko

What is the deal with this?

Why does Japan keep the best seikos for themselves?

They do this with cars too.

Creationwatches might have your model, but from what I've seen they cost than on Seiya, maybe specifically because of the tax. However, they have daily sales (although they always seem to be ugly models IMO).

Lad on t'market will probably charge you 2 bob.

Great, the Bulova shill is back.
>>
>>59050216
Check the back plate, around the edge of the plate there is sometimes a small tab where you may fit a tool to pop off the back plate. The battery is right there. Snap the plate back on after alignining it correctly, but take care not to exert pressure on the crystal when doing so.

If its a screw-off back plate, take it to a watch person as they probably have the correct tool for it. They'll typically charge about $10 to do it. Batteries are $3-5

I didn't do anything, value was fully declared. I've only ever heard of customs charges on FedEx international shipping to the US.

Why didn't your state apply sales tax?
>>
So I just timed my Seagull 1963. It's running at +15 seconds a day.

A little higher than I'd have liked. But I know that what the timagrapher says isn't always what you get in real life. I'll report back tomorrow.

What kind of third world country are you living in?
>>
>>59050323
Sales tax is generally only charged if you buy from a vendor in your state, as it is a state/county/city based tax. Buying from a different state has long been a way to pay no tax at all. Now customs from another country is a different issue.

>>
>>59050473
It's a normal thing in a lot of countries for customs to apply sales tax to anything you import.

It's completely underhanded and unfair and I don't agree with it, but it's pretty standard.
>>

I've bought watches off ebay for £20 that literally say "belonged to my dead father".
>>
>>59050496
Not for us americans thankfully.
>>
>>59050528
Why don't you just buy everything overseas and save money then?

The import tax thing was designed to prevent people from being able to purchase everything in another country for less.
>>
>>59050527
I doubt your vintage seiko 5s and pulsars was a Patek heirloom piece
>>
>>59050539
Yeah but that's not the point. The point is that some people are so devoid of morals they will literally flog dead relatives possessions for petty cash.
>>
>>59050538
Import tax and duties is sperate from sales tax.

You can buy across state lines to avoid sales tax.

Buying international it's still your legal responsibility to keep track of what you're buying and claim it on your annual tax returns. But if you're maybe buying a couple small things for personal use the IRS won't hunt you down for failure to claim.

Christ I hate it when people sell off family heirlooms. At least she got decent money for it instead of "lol I'd like $100 please! :3" like you see when women sell their grandfather's WWII vet bringbacks for Applebee giftcards.

What's the best app to see how fast or slow my watch is?

Is it better for them to be fast than slow?

>What's the best app to see how fast or slow my watch is?

Wild spectra light but I've only got it working with an exceptionally loud watch

>Is it better for them to be fast than slow?

Fast so you get gradually more on time for meetings as the week goes on.

They're dead. If you're not gonna use the item, why keep it?

You want it to be fast rather than slow.

You'd rather be early than late.

Watches have sentimental value.

My dad doesn't wear watches. But when he dies I'll never sell his Saxophone even though it's worth £1,000

What's /wt/ consensus on the Alpinist?

I wanna buy a SARB, but I hesitate between 017, 033, 035 and 065.

The 033 and 035: I used to love them, but now seeing pictures I think the lume makes them look cheapy seiko 5

The 065: maybe too dressy

That would leave me with the 017
