I’ve been thinking of building a computer just for test/playing around purposes. How low can I go in terms of money and parts if I want a computer that can still install modern applications( arduino playground, virtual box) so I can can actually work with it, be able to connect to modern devices( raspberry pi, arduino ETC). I basically just want a computer I can experiment with, and go as low as I can without having to worry about accidently fucking it up since it’s low investment and won’t have anything on it.
i don't know where you live, but I bet you can buy an i5 optiplex from your local craigslist for 100 bucks. if you want to do gaming you will have to get something that can house a real power supply though.
but srsly computers are dirt cheap
Just buy any used shit box that has at least an i3 in it, hell you could even go as low as a Core2Duo if need be.
Virtualization is different though, you'll need at least some power to do that.

Don't get an i3 or a core duo because they are fucking annoyingly shit. You should be able to get something with an i5 for around $100 easy.

Well yeah if you can swing one for 100 bux go for it, I'm kinda assuming OP is talking a dumpster diving tier computer.

A fast Core 2 Duo is essentially the oldest piece of equipment that can perform basic tasks at a tolerable speed. You may consider buying a lower-end Duo machine and putting a Quad in it. Q6600 is only like $20 on eBay and would be a big step up from a Duo.
