Why the fuck do you even use these editors? What's with the complicated keyboard combos and religious side picking? Literally why do people use emacs or vim? The ONLY time I've ever had to edit text without using a mouse is SSHing into a Raspberry Pi, and even then pico does just fine.

Vim's copy-paste commands are y: yank, p: paste. Indeed, it's very phonetic and simple to use.
yyp: yank (twice for entire line) and paste it below.
Much simpler than the fuckery that is Emacs' C-a C-k C-y RET C-y.

The Vim command you described is a niche one to paste from an external selection. It also makes perfect sense in itself.
": a register (next command specifies it). "+: the clipboard register.
p meaning of course paste, we have "+p to paste from clipboard. That wasn't hard, now, was it?

Im fairly new to programming and tried both of these, I'm fucking awful.

Is it really worth the time to learn it seeing as holding the CTRL key for everything kills my finger, when mousing is easier anyway?

Thing is though, I think slower than I type, so I'm bottlenecked anyway? Or is this just one of those things where I won't understand until I try it?

Sorry, im fairly new to linux and still finding my feet with what to use and what I want to do with my life
>>
>>59033931
Hah, we did both RoR and .net.

...kinda wish we did Django or node instead though, they make so much more sense..
>>
>>59042685
Once you get used to things like moving to the next/previous word with w and b and navigating with hjkl instead of the arrow keys you won't want to go back to a normal editor.
The other advantage to vi is it's already installed on pretty much every Unix system out there
>>
>>59042646
I can't write to the end of a line in vim, like if I move the cursor all the way to the right using 'l':
my ass

the cursor will blink over the last 's', then when I go to 'i', it will start typing between the two s's.
Am I missing something?
>>
>>59042747
type a (for append) to insert after the character under the cursor

>>59042767
Thank you, my man.
>>
>>59042731
Yeah, I guess its more productive in that sense, but it doesn't replace an IDE does it? and things like VS Code has autocompletion and stuff?

Sorry, I sound awful. I just want to understand how I can use something like this and be faster than just clicking?

(Games Dev, if that makes much of a difference?)

different anon

you can install plugins like YouCompleteme, Syntastic, etc

As for, how is that faster than clicking? Personally, for me, I think it's because of not having to move your hands around by always just having it on the home row. You can also specify how many lines you wanna go down or up, etc. I used to think Vim really was just a meme, but once I actually continued using it, I can never go back to other text editors

Ask him if he ever heard about GitHub or GitLab.

I can totally live with people making fun of Rails, but NOT from a .NET guy.

>>59042706

For me it was the other way arround.
I am a Ruby guy and had to work with Python for the whole year. I suffered a lot.

I don't know - to me Python just felt complicated:
>What you what to do this?
>Silly, you have to decode it and then transform it into a tuple..
>No, not like THAT, silly. Use the pythonic® workaround.. :^)

Oh boy..

why would you even use vim or emacs in the year 2017?

if you absolutely have to do something in console use a fucking nano. it covers all your needs and you don't have to study a new fucking language of hotkeys. otherwise use literally any other editor with gui.

emacs isnt really a console editor anymore. it has a very long heritage of being one, and still fully supports running in a console, but it still can have all the frilly menus, mouse selections, and whatever other stupid bullshit you'd expect out of a GUI editor.

KDE Neon.

I use Neon instead of Lubuntu just because I trust that it has better packaging for the Plasma workspace. However, when im actively journaling or programming, I use EXWM strapped on top of LXDE.
