Is a laptop needed for college when you already have a desktop?
Yes, you will need a MacBook for college.
What country?
get a chromebook for like $200 and put any real money towards *useful* desktop upgrades. that is more ram, and NVMe m.2 adapter cards
No, but you'll probably want one anyway. There's likely going to be a lot of downtime and computer labs at universities are usually bullshit.
Laptop gives you mobility, that's the main advantage.
You actually don't. Paper and pen is sufficient

Depends on the courses you take.

Thinkpad X220 will cover your college needs

In theory >>59029923 is right,
However in Praxis you wanna have at least one device with you that holds up your pdfs or whatever form your presentation/exercise come in.
A 1200$ Facebook machine is not needed for that.

Why not mITX?
You'll probably would want to take notes and browse from time to time. In this case any 200-400€ laptop with a distro of your choice is completely sufficient. Just make sure that it has proper linux driver support.
Anything "bigger" such as compiling, editing etc. can be done from your desktop.

If you're in a relevent field, it's useless, you can't write mathematic formulas fast enough with a computer.
Take a cheap tablet for the pdf if needed but anything else is useless.
If you're in a garbage field that recquires lots of brain-numbing endless text writing take a facebook machine, you're in for a shitty life anyway better have fun wasting money while you can.

This.

>>59029858 is a damned liar.
Get a cheap laptop for note-taking. Anything sub-300 and has at least a sandy bridge processor is good enough for a word/excel/powerpoint machine.

Not really, but having one probably will help you. Just buy a cheap one laptop or an old Thinkpad.
X220/T420 will be enough.
