IRC: #/tpg/ on irc.rizon.net

Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).

----
If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", ultraportable
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

Get something like a refurb T410 (my first Thinkpad) instead, they're like $150-$180 on ebay.

Should I buy chink batteries for a t430?

>>
>>59032495

>has 1600x900

Is this a good alternative to the 1366 shitscreen? I'm the anon that's been going around looking for a laptop for image editing.
>>
>>59031668
you can use it for ssh but I would only but it if it has has the higher res screen.
>>
>>59032608
It's just as shit for colors and viewing angles, you just get a more respectable resolution. You have to go big if you want a decent screen.
>>
>>59032608
>laptop for image editing.
Look for a w530 w/FHD. The displays you'll find on the t430 are terrible for color intensive work. The AOU displays shipped with those get good viewing angles, but not what you see on good IPS displays. The color coverage is leagues better than the t430 panel, but not up to the coverage offered by modern professional displays.

In all honesty, professional image editing on a t430 is a sad prospect, you would have to claim that the image quality doesn't matter.
>>
>>59032711
It really ramps up the price, though. I'm looking at prices 400€ minimum. I guess quality is expensive.
>>
>>59032489
Especially since I didn't spend but $80 on it
>>
>>59032788
Look around of a T440p or T440s with the FHD IPS. I believe it was the only x1080 screen installed on those models.

They used to sell eDP conversion boards to install that screen in a t430, but I don't know if they are still available, so be wary of that idea. Other than that, if you get a t430, you're always going to be stuck with a notoriously shit display.

The t530 has an AOU FHD display, but you would have no way of knowing what model of AOU display is installed from your average eBay listing. Some of the t530 w/ FHD used cheaper AOU displays than found on the w530.

For your health.
>>
Looking through the archive it serms that many people here don't like Fujitsu, why? I was looking at their Lifebook tablet convertibles as an alternative to my x230t. They seem to have better battery life at least, and possibly higher quality IPS screens.
>>
>>59032608
Nothing is worse than the 1366x768 screen
Worst case scenario is the 1600x900 screen is just as bad colour/viewing angles wise, but it's a higher res so it's only better, not worse.

For image editing, it's okay but not the best, i wouldn't use it exclusively if I were doing professional image editing. Best to get a monitor with better colours for home use, or put in a better panel (there's some panels that fit it and have better colours and viewing angles, but this just adds to the cost, and if you need very good colours and can't do your editing properly on a less-than-ideal screen, buying the lower res screen is still a decent idea if you're gonna buy a better screen anyway)
>>
>>59032954
>T440p or T440s

xx40 models don't have discrete trackpoint buttons, which can be a bother, but for how much you gain over the t430, it would be worth it to use what's on there and upgrade it when you have a few extra bucks.

Also, the "s" build of any model will be slimmer and more portable, at the expense of battery life. The "p" distinction is usually the same, just given a better options list than base when you order.

>>59032988
>there's some panels that fit it and have better colours and viewing angles

What are these? As far as I knew I've only seen people but tn panels from the X1 and the IPS from the t440. I've seen the t420 take FHD displays as well, but there are often issues and not generally recommended.
>>
>>59033034
>xx40 models don't have discrete trackpoint buttons
they can if you swap in a xx50 model trackpad
>>
>>59032711
>The AOU displays shipped with those
Not that anon, just curious on this.

>One of the following TFT displays:
> 14.0" HD (1366 x 768) (200 NITS)
> 14.0" HD+ (1600 x 900) (250 NITS)

There are only one kind of 1366 x 768 and one kind of 1600 x 900 displays on T430's, or more?
>>
>>59033034
There's a certain alienware model with a screen that can be easily swapped into the T420 for better colors. m14x r2 or something like that. The only downside is that it's a glossy panel.
>>
>>59033230
Glossy panels are a turnoff for me.
So is 16:9 but I deal with that.
>>
>>59033114
Notable clarification. I was alluding to by saying to upgrade it later. t450 trackpads are only about $30 or less and fix what Lenovo did in the generation directly after.

>>59033150
>Not that anon, just curious on this.
Further clarification, AUO*** made the FHD displays for the W530. They also made the T530 displays, but there were different models that made their way into production, and some have been problematic/disappointing to some.

>>59033230
Good point. I've heard a decent bit about this, but haven't tried it for myself.

>>
>>59033571
It's a new machine, so not really. s models are a bit dumb in the way that they sacrifice battery life for a slimmer profile.
>>
>>59033592
Okay, I wasn't sure the difference between the p50 and the p50s, but the s was cheaper. Now I know why. If the T460 had a gpu, I would have gone for it.
>>
>>59033640

>>
>>59033569
>>59029663
Related, but am I stuck with the stock screen? The t440 is my old work laptop that I got for 125
>>
>>59033771
Google "T440 replacement panels" and go for one that looks good. Or, you could try your hand at adapting some IPS panel from an older thinkpad to T440 connector, though ymmv if you take the latter road.
>>
>>59033424
Both the W530 and T530 had AUO displays. The AUO B156HW01 V.4 is the display you want, other models may be found in the T530. Don't forget that you are likely going to want to install a different color profile. The factory profile is lacking. Keep an eye out for if it has the color calibrator installed as well.

Look for the serial and model numbers on auctions online and enter them in the Lenovo Support search if you're looking for specific hardware. It tends to be more of a suggestion than a confirmation in some cases. IBM/Lenovo had different manufacturers for most parts, and in some cases, FRUs.

>>59033518
Why do you want to swap the keyboard? Is it broke? If it is, replace it with the same keyboard and install the t450 trackpad.
>>
>>59033771
>Am I stuck with the stock screen.
No. Get a T440s FHD IPS screen. There are several guides on how to do this.

I don't really get why weight is considered such a huge concern with Laptops nowadays. You don't carry it around by hand anyways. Whoever can't carry a 5lbs backpack is a manlet. What's really important is good connectivity, good battery life and a small footprint. If that means the laptop has to be thicker and heavier, so be it.
>>

OK I'm just gonna summarize:

Every Thinkpad is named with a letter and a number. The letter stands for the series. For example:

>T series for what some might call the standard series.
>X series for ultraportables
>P series for workstations

There are several others at a lower price point but these are the essential.
The first number in the naming system stands for the size.

>2 for 12"
>4 for 14"
>5 for 15"
>7 for 17"

Not all sizes are available in all series. For example, 12" isn't available in the T series.
The last two numbers represent the year. The Thinkpads of 2016 were the 60 line. For example:

>T460
>T560
>X260

The 70 series of 2017 is currently being released.
There are some exceptions with this system though. For example the workstations are calles P50 for 15" and P70 for 17". Also among the X series there is an X1 Carbon which is basically an ultra thin Ultrabook.

Let's Note RZ6.
>>
>>59039148
I forgot one important thing:
In some of those series there are also variations with an added letter at the end of the name. For example:

>T460s
>T460p

The s stands for a thinner version of the laptop with less performance while the p identifies a somewhat thicker more powerful version.

1 for 11" laptops
2 for 12.1 or 12.5" laptops
4 for 14.1" or 14.5" laptops
5 for 15.6" laptops
7 for 17.1" inch laptops

>WXYZ
W is the series (T series for example)
X is the screen size
Y is the year the laptop was made
Z: 0 for usual run, 1 for late comers or laptops that bridge yearly series (T431 between T430 and T440 for example)

>i
Cheaper low power CPU's, like Celerons and i3's
>s
Slimmer versions. Less battery options and usually no dGPU
>p
More powerfull leptops compared with the "normal" series. Usually have dGPUs
>t
For tablet versions regardin the X series, until the X230t.

This naming convention is not universal (For the X series, you had the X201 for example, and the T60 and T61 came in several sizes).
The X1 is also an outlier, being a ultra thin ultrabook.

Just to add to your summary

t460p is 33% off. I know t470 coming out soon, but I'm wondering if the 33% off is good right now?
I don't really care about getting the t470, since all I want in the nvdia card in the t460p.

In total, I can get the t460p for ~700 fresh off the line and upgrade it with ssd and ram at my convenience. Wondering if this is worth.
>>
>>59039396
In terms of quality (regarding current thinkpad offerings) we have:

P > T = X (no X1) > expensive Yogas > X1 > cheaper Yogas > S > 13 > expensive Helixes > L > cheap Helixes > Twist = Edge

I have the wide gamut 1080 display found in the w530 in my t530 and i have to say its probably the best TN screen ive used. Brightness is good it is decently brighter than the normal 1366x768 and 1600x900 displays offered with the w530. Though be warned it needs a colour profile applied as out of the box colours seem over-saturated.
>>
>>59040144
i see, well i'm buying a used w530 i7-3740QM 2,7GHz 8Gb 128GB SSD for £425 that's in good condition except the screen is scratched so i'm going to be replacing it with the best w530 fhd screen i can find online. I hope the heat isn't a problem. Also, do you think i'm being ripped off? it seems like a good deal to me.
>>
>>59040130
there is no major difference between the Yoga series in terms of quality; all are made from the same materials and are equivalent to L tier thinkpads in build quality but more like Ts series in terms of size/features

the X1 has been god tier for 3 years in a row now making the 12" X series almost completely redundant. The X1 was a really mediocre gimmick first time around, useless clusterfuck 2nd time around, fixed entirely third time around, and improving on perfection ever since

its a bit pricey considering the screen is damaged also I'd expect it to have aa k2000m at that price. Also these b156w01 v.4 wide gamut panels are hard to come by these days as they have been out of production for a very long time. You can still find them but be prepared to pay a premium for them, cheaper compatible LCDs don't compare to them.

they're literally the best laptops ever made from a portability standpoint

sure something like the XPS 15 stomps it in terms of power and features but it lacks the portability and resilience that the X1 has
>>
>>59040306
But that place is reserved for the X250/60.
Always remember, smaller size is world's better for portability than thinness.
And the Xseries has been making strides in portability since the X201, with smaller, more durable batteries, retaining the power, heat dissipation and expandability (this last gimped) needed for real work. Something the Carbon doesn't have.

>t. portability pro that messed with latest X series laptops
>>
>>59040224
even if i can't find the wide gamut panels, i've heard the regular fhd screen for the w530 you can find anywhere is pretty good. Also, for some reason, laptops with better specs are cheaper in the U.S but they're not worth buying from there if you're in Europe because of the high customs fee. I can't find any w530 for this price in the UK, or anything close in specs/dispaly that is as good. Not sure if i should buy but i can't seem to find anything better for the same price.

You would be surprised how many people don't bother to calibrate, or at least update profiles, to this day. It really makes a difference in the display, which tends to oversaturate.

If your laptop doesn't come with one and you have other displays it's worth it to just get a standalone calibrator. The built-in Pantone is convenient in some cases.

>The s stands for a thinner version of the laptop with less performance while the p identifies a somewhat thicker more powerful version.

Keep it simple and say that the "s" stands for "slim" and the "p" stands for performance. "i" models are lower-spec, "e" models are "economy." "t" is "tablet," "ds" is "dual screen" and "d" denotes a 3-dimensional display.

Fun fact: Thinkpads have a naming system:

[Series] [Screen Size] [CPU Generation] [Trim]

This system started with the Intel Nahalem-based Thinkpads, examples being the W510 or the T410. There are exceptions to this system in this generation. however, such as the X201. xx01's are the first in their series to use "Intel Core i3/5/7" processors, with the x200 and x300 using Core 2 Duo.

>>59039975

This is a specific model of T60. The only T60 for that is a 15" 4:3 with SXGA+ or UXGA IPS, and really only the latter. If you don't have those nothing is gained over a T61 with IBM badges on it if you're insecure.

If you've got Intel boards with different FPUs, you'll want to be sure to stick with one that supports Penryn. Middleton's BIOS will allow Penryns to function, but you will be limited by the surrounding chipset.

Once you have a Penryn board, find a T9300, non-abused T5000 or X9000. With a good paste, heat sink and fan, you've got a 4:3 Thinkpad you can unironically use.

I used one of those for work.

>slightly inferior trackpoint
1. The trackpoint is absolute garbage, it's way too loose. It essentially feels almost like a binary on or off - very difficult to get the proper pointer speed out of it.
2. The covering is some weird soft ameoba-like thing, it squishes around under your fingertip unlike the hard rubber used on thinkpad trackpoints.
3. MOST IMPORTANTLY, it only has two buttons, rendering it completely unusable for standard web browsing and text documents etc, since you still end up having to use the touchpad/arrow keys when you want to scroll and you can't use the middle button to open in new tab.

The hardware and screen quality were pretty decent though. The whole bottom panel pops off with no screws for super easy access to components. It seems like it would be a great normie machine.

The AFFS screen is amazing, makes it feel almost like a modern laptop. Always message the seller before ordering to confirm exactly what he'll be sending - I ended up with a glossy panel (seller's fault), but I opted to keep it for a partial refund.

I can actually FEEL my keystrokes on TP and - for the most part - KNOW when I pressed something. Don't even get me started on how good it feels to write code on this compact son of a bitch. Truly fucking profound.

There's many more factors in this model than $100 worth. Processor, display, graphics, every othre component based on your needs.

The T460p isn't your average neutered T-series. It only offers only quad core processors, only IPS displays, and dedicated graphics as an option.

Normally the T series offers spreadsheet worthy displays at a cost that reflects warranty service. In the private market I would assert that a T460p is worth 4-5 (T420)s.

It's an unpopular opinion, but the T460p makes sense for those who find the want for portability over 15" and 17" workstations.Honestly, it does great honor to the T-series, which has been generally neglected in the Sandy Bridge era. The "p" designation leaves no room for "u" or even dual core processor options.

>So the x220/x230 IPS screen is far better than even the w530's brightest screen?
Yes and no. Depends on what you value.
The IPS screens will almost always have very stable viewing angles, but in the case of the X-series IPS and the W-series TN, the W-Series TN wins (in my opinion) because the X series IPS displays are generally a mix of glossy and dim. I still have my x230 tablet and my w530, and I will say that the x230 tablet leaves brightness to be desired. As >>59040903 said, "better, but not as comfy." Anon is welcome to correct me, but the X series has size and portability going for it, whereas if you were to take the W series off of the table, it would be rather cumbersome.
Overall, the W530 with FHD possesses one of the best TN panels affixed to a Thinkpad. It depends on how much you travel. I personally prefer the W530 display to the X230 tablet.
I don't personally know all of the displays that were shipped with the W530, mine came with the v4, but to my knowledge they are a rare screen to find aftermarket these days. Chances are if you find an FHD W530, it has this display. It is less likely to find this display in a T530, but still very possible.

At least you've got priorities. Do a 14" Frankenpad (or even more rare, 14" 4:3 T61) portable masterrace. (You really don't gain that much until you go avionics-grade UXGA, wher you need 15".) Or better yet, step into a newer laptop if you don't have one. We're in-between generations right now, with a major off-lease event.

Because most use windows which until Win8 didn't allow to be installed on USB flash drive.
Most of these ExpressCards show up as removable USB storage.
I haven't tested SSD ExpressCard, because I haven't found one and it's expensive.
However I've tested this http://a.co/cNEDGqg with class 10 MicroSD Card I can boot nearly any Unix based OS.
I haven't tested Windows since I already have it installed on mSATA SSD, and I only have 32 GB MicroSD cards.
http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/ExpressCard_slot
The reason is because the controller identify the expresscard as a USB flash drive so the BIOS treat it as such, that's why you can boot from it.

Thoughts on the new ThinkPad 13? It's up on european sites already. I'm seriously considering getting one, seems to be the most sensible ultrabook out there.
>>
>>59049441
>Depends on what you want to do with a bios mod.

My intention was to grab a cheap laptop for hackintosh. I've seen that the x220 has a very decent guide for it that points to a specific BIOS to get some decent support. x230 also seems to be supported but it seems a bit more finicky.

I checked and I can get an x220 with 8gb of RAM/128gb SSD for a bit less, but that one has an i5 2410M and I think that's one of the weakest.

gookovo is blindly trying to copy everything the macbook is, including lack of modularity

Like I said, if I wanted a fashion accessory I would get Apple not Chinese trash that tries to copy it.

Thinkpads were good when they had a unique brand identity but that's too hard for the Chinese to maintain since it's in their blood to blindly copy products in superior market sectors

ThinkPad 13 is the only ultrabook I found with RAM that isn't soldered on and a keyboard that can be replaced though... Seems pretty modular to me.

>>
>>59048083
Back in early 2015 I was looking for a new Thinkpad and the T420 blazeit was standard issue meme at the time. I was on the verge if buying one but I was completely shocked when I saw my friend's T420 after using a base T400 for the three years prior. Somehow, the LED screen on the T420 manages to be darker and has worse colour reproduction than the older CCFL screen on the T400. And that thing was shit. Ancient tech. Yet somehow it still managed to better than the "improved" garbage that came after.

I ended up getting a W520. Cost a little more, it was a little heavier, but the resolution, the quad core, the massive RAM limit and the gorgeous screen more than make up for it. I've had this computer for two years now and I can see myself using it for many years to come. Especially when the 2760QM outperforms a lot of modern processors.
>>
>>59049937
I bought a T500 with the ATI graphics brand new from Lenovo when I started university in 2009. Still have it. Fantastic machine, although the dedicated card is basically useless nowadays unless you plan to use it for stuff like Rome: Total War or 1080p Chinese Cartoons. Years ago I tried to swap in a 1920x1200 panel to replace the 1680x1050 one, but I could not for the life of me get it to work. Think it needs some modding which I was not willing to do. I'd say 1050p is good enough anyways, almost as many vertical lines as more modern 1080p.

I had just said in the post prior that my x220t isn't cutting it, Photoshop shits itself at anything higher than 100dpi, 1k x 1k resolution and anything 3d is slow as can be.
Mostly the integrated graphics being so bad that graphics acceleration doesn't do that much compared to some of the integrated graphics on newer CPUs.

Bigger sites (like fromjapan) got automated bidding so you put in money on the proxy site and then you can bid in real time or put a sniper bid. You don't even have to go to Y!A since fromjapan got built in search function even if Y!A got some helpful features like watch list and to see what previous auctions sold for.
