Need help picking classes. I'm planning on going down the CS route and hoping for the best. I've already completed most of my prereq and all of my CS/Math intro classes. My choices are:

Most likely:
>Web programming (5)
>Physics II (5)
Considering:
>Foundations of computing (4)
>Matrix Algebra (3)
>Intro to differential equations (3)
>Chem I (5)

Also, if I take a <5 credit class, is it worth it to take a meme class like drawing or photography or whatever? Could take me to around 18-19 credits next quarter if I decide to do that rather than 13-14.

My GTX1070 arrives in the mail tomorrow, and I'm lost as to which monitor I should get.

At the moment I'm just at 1080p@60Hz.

I don't want to spend any more than $400 US on a monitor at this stage. Maybe later in the year I'll splurge and get a 1440p@144Hz, but at the moment I'm looking at 2 options.

1080p@144Hz+Gsync
or
1440p@60Hz+IPS

There's a place that has these two options around the same price.

I've been told to consider 1440p considering I don't play many online competitive games, but I would love to play games at a constant 100+ FPS.

I'm torn..
>>
>>59028527

Not on a 1070.60 sure

You dont need 144hz unless you're doing fast action gaming, such as fps'.

If you tweak your games you can get that on 1440p with a 1070. I'd honestly go with the 1440p@60Hz with the IPS. It'll look great, and you can easily stay between 60-100 FPS in a lot of games. Just don't turn on stupid shit like MSAA like a lot of retards do.

Only because by default the first account made on a windows machine has admin rights. If you've ever used windows in a work environment, or set up secondary accounts on your PC, you'd be prompt for the password of an admin.

If you're logged in as an admin or root on linux it skips the password too

Will a 25" monitor scrunch 1440p?
>>
>>59028873

not him, but I have a 25" 1440P IPS monitor from AOC.

It's a huge difference between a 24" 1080P but I can easily read shit and my eyes does not get fucked at an arm's length away. (Altough it did take a day to get used to it)

Keep in mind that Windows applies scaling by default on these higher pixel density monitors, so you're gonna have to turn it off in the operating system.

When I look at my 1080P 24" IPS monitor, the pixels are so fucking big you can see them from 5 feet away easily. I think 1080P computer monitors should only be allowed on 20-22" monitors I think, not sure what the pixel density will be but 24" is way too big imo.

Everyone has different comfortability thresholds. Your best bet is to either look at the monitor in person, in a store.

Or either try to find a review of it from pcmonitors.info or .tftcentral.co.uk

...or a random guy from YouTube.

...........or buy from a store/webshop with good return policy that allows you to test the product and then return it if it doesn't work out :)

Tried without addons, no avail. Thing is some elements of the webpage load and some don't. I've tried loading facebook public group pages just to see if I could load them and the page would be stuck loading on all browsers too. Streams on twitch also load strangely too, making me press the play button when they used to load automatically.

Could this be a DNS issue? I doubt it's something with javascript

in c, how would i go about recursively calling a function that takes a generic function pointer as an argument? i'm trying to write a binary search tree inorder traversal algorithm that takes as arguments a pointer to a NodeList struct (only a pointer to the root node) and a generic function pointer. the function header looks like
void inorderTraverse(NodeList* nodes, void (*visitFunc)(Item*)

obviously i want to recursively call this function to traverse through the tree and visit each node (each node holds a pointer to an Item), but i'm not sure how to write that recursive call. writing something like
inorderTraverse(current, (visitFunc)(current->root->item));
gives an "invalid use of void" error. is it possible to do what i'm trying to do?
probably a dumb question but couldn't really find an answer by googling and i'm tired as all hell, any help is greatly appreciated

>>
>>59030014
You're already passing current, so why do you need to pass the parameter if it can be derived from current? Couldn't you just call:
inorderTraverse( current, visitFunc);

Although if you need to pass the parameter along with the function that can't be calculated from the other parameter, you can just add it as another parameter (doing the recurring in a private sub-function if necessary).

>Is pirating windows a good option? Are there any other cons than possible malware?
It's a good option, just download your activator or KMS from mydigitallife directly and not through the torrent trackers.
Alternatively you could install 7, activate it, then upgrade for free to 10 and then do a clean install with the generated key.
The downside is you'll have to use Windows 10 and the key is considered digital entitlement so it's not transferable to another computer.
That's how I'm using 10 on my laptop, as far as anyone is concerned it's 100% legit.
>>

The encryption you choose wont matter much, and I doubt you'll get a much better VPN connection. But most seedboxes should saturate that, even the cheap ones.

There's barely any cons to using unactivated windows outright. If your PC doesn't belong to a business there would be zero consequences to not having a legit license itself

I am very new to networking (only know basic concepts such as what are LANs, Routers, Switches, DHCP, very basic subnetting, etc).

I'm looking to replace my default shitty router. I believe it is the main culprit of the slow connection I am experiencing and might be bottlenecking hard. Also, it has no external antenna.

My house has 2 floors and a repeater on the second floor. The router is downstairs. Internet connection is weak, but enough (if functioning at full capacity), 20Mb/s

Can I get some basic pointers on what to look for on a new router? Antenna? Features? Brands to avoid?

Thanks

The gpu I replaced with this shitty new one might not have had overheating problems, but still had worse specs and was able to run most of the games I played at max settings.

What kind of games are you talking about when you say I wouldn't be able to play on max settings? Out of all the games I'm interested in playing, Overwatch is probably the most demanding. You don't think this card could play that at decent settings?

>Also your current card is bad.
I know that now. Is overheating a common problem with it? Or is it something to do with my computer in general? It's the first graphics card I've had heat problems with, but I never saw any mention of it until asking about it here in /sqt/ some time back.

A better router for one. Although vertical signal is what wifi generally sucks at the most. You could try a powerline adapter. They're not the miracle they first sound like, but if your house has decent electrical wiring and you use one of the more recent models, they can do a pretty good job of extending your network, and they have models that produce their own mini wifi network.

Is your current router a gateway (modem/router combo)? What wifi standards does it support?

I have used a powerline adapter before, but either it was a shitty one or my house's electrical wiring is bad.

I shall research better on the points you mentioned and might get back here. Thanks.
>>
>>59034195
Sure thing. Bear in mind that if either your router or repeater is wireless g, then that could be reducing your top speed to around 15mbps or less, which then would have to be split between all wireless devices in the house. And that's not even accounting for instability.

>also is there a particular reason i should have 64 bit?
Absolutely, especially if you're into modern videogames as many require 64bit OS. Not sure about the specifics, but you should definitely be seeing increased efficiency of resources over a 32bit install of Windows

Okay, so I need to learn enough programming for it to be a marketable skill as soon as I can. I have about 3 months to do so.

I know some basic C++, I'd say I still remember more or less everything upto chapter 9 on all the topics on learncpp.com but I never learned to make anything to useful and I'm incredibly rusty.

So, where should I start? I was thinking of picking up something more immediately useful like Python or Ruby. Or should I just continue with C++? I'd also really appreciate any recommendations for reference material.

>I want to start off this post by saying that I could have been smarter and read the site better stating that you could become an exit node by using tribler and that I am very much regretting not doing that now. That said, here's my story.

>While reading a tech site, I saw an article discussing the anonymous torrent feature tribler had just added. I downloaded and installed it on Dec 19th. I thought nothing of it. Later on January 17th during a break from classes, I fired tribler up to download a file I could not find on Usenet. I don't recall what anonymous setting I picked, but I remember having troubles with speed and after two days giving up on the file. I then downloaded it through utorrent at a later date.

>Yesterday I was raided by law enforcement with guns drawn and accused of downloading through torrent an archive with thousands of pictures and a few movies of child pornography. The dates I was was Jan 17th and Jan 18th, the two days I had tribler running They searched my one of my computers and a phone on site and found nothing and took the third one in to be checked as it had too many hard drives and data to be effectively searched on site. I did not download anything of the sort and I used the same torrent file to eventually get the file I needed through utorrent and it was legit and the file I was looking for. I know they won't find anything on the computers I own, but it was the scariest experience experience of my life. I just want to warn everyone that not only was this exit node problem is more that just a possibility, but a reality. Please everyone be careful.

It's based off of the tor model. It's basically a series of proxies with everyone acting as middle nodes for everyone else. It integrates the ability for you to host your own content easily and search for things without external websites. Part of the end goal is to get a lot of content hosted with tribler instead of clients so it works like a tor hidden service, which would be far more secure for everyone.

Does the "print screen" function in Windows losslessly reproduce every pixel exactly as it appears on the screen? Or can it potentially introduce artifacts to the image that weren't there originally?
>>
>>59038097
It pretty much just reproduces everything. Now if you save it as something lossy like a jpeg then that will remove some information.
>>
>>59038097
just taking a screenshot is lossless
if you want to preserve its quality you should save it as .png though

as the other anon said, .jpg attempts to intelligently throw out unimportant-ish data to save on filesize, meaning its images can get a lot more space-efficient but they can also lose quality and produce artifacts

Then it's hard to determine if the issue is with your internet itself or the wifi signal. If it's the actual internet giving out, then you would want to call your ISP and go through troubleshooting, see if they need to fix the line or replace the router or something. If it is your wifi, then potentially getting a higher quality wireless N router could help. You're also limited by the quality of your devices network cards, so replacing those might actually be more important. I would disable the repeater if you can, or run ethernet to it like you said and use it as an access point. Otherwise you're cutting the speed of your wireless in half. If you do absolutely have to use the repeater in double wireless mode, at leas make sure it's properly halfway in between devices, and not just sitting a few feet away from the things that are connected through it. If you get a second router, you'll have to put one of them in bridging mode. Oh, and if the interface device connects to your router via ethernet, then it's probably a modem, in which case you can usually just swap out routers directly, without a special setup

Basically I'm wondering if there's any difference between a modem with multiple ethernet ports and a router. They seem to accomplish the same goal if the modem can allow multiple devices to connect to it.

A modem only has one port and can only attach one device. If it is capable of attaching more than one device, then it is also a router. The combination is called a gateway.

The risk you take in pirating software outweighs any benifits you get from running an AV. Pirate all the movies and music you want, but not software, and especially not the sofware that's in charge of protecting your system.

It's an API, I can't change what it returns.
Plus, the ISBN of the book isn't specified inside the Javascript (it's in the HTML), which means that I have to use a roundabout method to get the ISBN to the Javascript, which might require PHP.

>>
>>59041401
And what are the pros of having a longger bipeline?
>>
>>59041418
It means that once you've queued up a bunch of instructions, you can execute them really quickly one after another.

The problem is that normal software almost never queues up a whole bunch of instructions for execution at once, so you just have a pipeline filled with instructions that need to be executed quickly but have to wait their turn, making performance in "the real world" feel sluggish.

Still great for SuperPI, though.
>>
>>59041409
Protip: you're still in all likelihood going to have to tweak settings. Maxing games out is a meme and not actually a reasonable thing to do. Granted, this may not apply to 1080p screens if that's what you've got, but does begin to apply at 1440p or high refresh screens.

This isn't necessarily because you'r computer is too slow, or the games are unoptimized, it's just that as a dev, you can demand as much performance as you want on the top end, provided it still runs on the low end. So you end up with settings like the whole Very High range on Crysis, or Ubersampling on TW2. It is generally not reasonable to run things like these, with the hardware available at the time of release. The answer is not multiple graphics cards, and not the devs optimizing the game. The answer is tweaking settings.
>>
>>59041512
I have been semi aware of this but I feel you don't understand what a nightmare X fire is.
I just got new Doom and (like many games) it for some reason will decide to not engage the 2nd card, even on lowest setting with all options off. I always verify this with DS3 because it runs X fire like butter, for some reason.
I'm done with multiple cards.
>>
>>59041409
A 1060 would probably do ya if you're just playing 1080p/60. And geforce experience can pick roughly the ideal settings for 90% of games and apply it for you automatically

Really? Interesting. Why do new mother boards still come with multiple PCI slots?
Just to seem impressive?

>>
>>59041553
No, no. I understand, and you're exactly right. I just don't want you to shell out for the 1080 (which is cool, not trying to get you to poor-out or anything), and then be disappointed if not every game runs with the default completely maxed out settings.

Multi-GPU is never the answer. Sorry the fucking retards suckered you into thinking that was a normal solution. Never has been, and while it might be someday, it's not now.
>>
>>59041504
Thanks for the explanation
>>
>>59041625
... PCIe slots are just normal expansion slots. They aren't specifically for graphics cards, they can be for useful stuff as well.

Even for graphics cards, you might want to use them for parallel computing in which case it's fine to have 4+ of them, they just won't scale usefully for gaming.

>>59041583
>xfire/sli has been mostly dropped... it's been getting progressively shittier...
WHEN WAS IT EVER GOOD?! SERIOUSLY? It's always been a joke for as long as I can remember. it just became trendy to cheap-out and get 2 shitty cards because "le better than a top tier card for the same price". But the fact that it was trendy never meant it was actually a solid solution.

Back during the Voodoo2 days. Having two in SLI meant you could play games at 1024x768 instead of 800x600. If you had a faster CPU, like a Pentium III 600, you could get around twice the framerates as you would've gotten with a single Voodoo2.

Unless you enjoy playing at the lowest possible setting, stick with 1080p 60fps.

With the "optimization" settings, you can get above 144hz, which is when you can fully use your 144hz monitor. However, how many games are there that you think that can effectively run more than 144hz with a GTX 1070? Not a lot.

1440p + 60hz is also an issue.

All in all, you're safest to stick with 1080p@60fps on ultra settings.

Take this with a grain of salt, some games run terrific and are optimized for 1440p@60fps, but most of them aren't.
