Anon, do not buy a university textbook. They are designed to have a teacher come with them, so you'll never learn anything. I have a university textbook for teaching myself Java and I literally gave up after Chapter 1. I'd recommend you learn from free websites; obviously there are lots of them and they all teach basically the same stuff, but just pick one and keep at it until you feel like not doing. There isn't some magical pill you can take that will guarantee you learn Java properly, and if there was, you'd have to pay for night school classes to take it instead of just downloading muh free PDF.
