lua was my first language because that is what gmod used

however, to get the full use out of it, you're going to need to learn C or C++.
Also, it is only really good for single threaded things.

It's an alright language to learn.
If you actually want to become a good programmer though, you shouldn't stop there.
You should learn several different programming languages.
There's not the one best language that's the best choice for every application. Lua for example is an easy language, but it shouldn't be used for performance critical code.
Besides that, it's not like your brain only has space for one programming language.
