I used an Acer CB5-311 before my T420. My reasoning for switching was that I enjoyed having a laptop just for online shit, but I also wanted to read visual novels, which needed Windows. So basically I treat mine like a Chromebook that can also run VNs. In that respect, it hasn't disappointed.

anything above x240 will be good. Even the x240 is good if you put the discrete trackpoint buttons on it (easy to do.)

x230s are really getting a bit old for modern needs, if you bought one 2 or 3 years ago you did okay, but I would not recommend buying one now if you want long reliable battery life, and the x220 has stuck around because of keyboard memes.

This used to be true, here on 4chan everyone is poor. I put a UXGA IPS and ran a X9000 with post-absolute-shit NVS board and 8GB DDR2 in my T60 (frankenpad) in 2011. Frankenpads were the last statement against the Lenovo takeover. It was however just fun. While we talk about build quality and all of that, how we can still use 10 year old thinkpads, we have to think. Does a laptop need to last 10 years? In many cases it doesn't. You have "build quality," that is more notable than some, but for what use? A 5 year old Thinkpad will never be a new Thinkpad. It becomes encumbering in many ways.


Do many people "need" a new laptop? No. Do many people "need" a car? No. What do you need? Food, water, shelter, will to live. Everything else is to improve life or put off inevitable death. Old Thinkpads are a cheap way to access the internet and watch Chinese cartoons. That's why they are so popular here.

In the "do I want to fall for the old Thinkpad meme" decision, you have to ask yourself these questions:
>Do I want to be "that guy" with an old laptop?
>Am I counting on this computer to perform an essential task?
Some will mention the space station, which has very different requirements. You do not want to use most of what fits those requirements.
>If I travel, do I want to constantly be looking for a wall outlet?
You will hear arguments of people who claim 12+ hours of battery, this is achievable on certain models if you have a young, high capacity battery and likely a young slice battery as well. Both of these are likely additional costs and add considerable bulk and weight compared to laptop batteries that power today's much more efficient systems.

Nothing, at all. I can't remember the last time I turned it on. Don't buy a laptop if you have a desktop, there is no point. I thought it would be comfortable but a chair at a table is so much more comfortable than maintaining a strained position in bed with a laptop.

X200: Home linux console with still-good battery to handle power outages. Got it for free.
X230: Daily use carry-system. Used with Win10 for work app needs and general use. Traded old hardware for it.
T420: Used for personal business. Has HD+ screen and dock. Windows 7 system due to software needs; I travel with it and my vinyl cutting system to conventions to sell my wares, and use it docked at home for design work for the same business. It handles the rigors of travel well and takes a beating without issue. Traded an HP laptop for it.

These systems do exactly when I need without issue, and are rock-solid stable. One of my art-skilled friends helps me with some designs with a X220t I bought for him for the work. Snagged it for $140. Worth every penny with what he's produced for me.
