Today I purchased this server:
http://www.dell.com/us/business/p/poweredge-t20/pd?oc=bectc4
Which is on an insane sale btw, check here:

I was wondering if any of you had recommendations on what to put on it? I am currently thinking a file share/printer share server but I am not sure what else to add. I mainly purchased it as a passion project/learning opportunity. Any recommendations on what to add and/or favored OS would be much appreciated.

If you bought a server without a reason for owning one you've made a mistake.
I bought a MicroServer a while back and it's just sitting in my guest room.

give it to me please

Debian
You can use it to torrent as well. Check out Plex for video streaming.
probably run some meme docker based os on it.
too low memory for a proper hypervisor.
>>58996355
plex is fucking gay. shut up.
>>58996424
>plex is gay you should use this convoluted open source solution instead. You just have to compile it yourself and write 10 different config files. You pleb.
>>58996530
what is convoluted about DLNA?

How does this compare to something like https://www.amazon.com/Lenovo-ThinkServer-70A40037UX-Server-i3-4150/dp/B0167MYLL8/?
Been thinking about setting up a home server.

I do have a reason in that I will be learning how to setup/troubleshoot servers. I am currently in college for computers and am interested in this kind of thing. Even if it does come to that, at least it was only $300.
>>58996355
Huh, I never considered Debian as a decent server OS before.
>>58996208
this shit is trash
literally an optiplex with different plastic on the front
2 hard drive bays nigga get the fuck outta here
>>58996208
Don't forget to set up SSH with dynamic port forwarding and keypairs set up for secure encrypted browsing wherever you are.
>>58996632
>Lenovo
>server with a consumer CPU
>does not come with a hard drive
>one of the bullet points is "server class features"
stay the fuck away from that
OP's server is nothing special, but that thing is an abomination
>>58996783
I agree it's pretty sub par, but it has 6 drive bays and has a xeon. That's no optiplex.
>>58997108
the xeon is a haswell i5
>>58996769
lol so you don't have a reason
have fun with that brick

This is one of the main reasons to own a personal server. Even A VPS in Switzerland is handy to own.
Personally OP, my server is setup for XMPP with Conversations, SSH and media streaming for home and friends.
