So I'm debating if this would be a smart move.
have a Macbook Pro 13 inch mid 2012 laptop and wanting to sell it to switch over to thinkpad. I already got rid of my iphone and have a moto g4 phone now. And transferring files is glitchy as hell.
The most I could probably get is 500$ and planning to get the thinkpad t420 used.

Consider buying an HP elitebook they are kind of like macbooks but not gay. But expect worse screen quality if you buy an older business class laptop.
It's only in the last couple of years that we've started getting decent IPS displays in more laptops.

Thinkpad is NOT a meme
take it from a guy who sold his desktop and exclusively uses a thinkpad now
they offer amazing performance for the price, and it is perfect for every use case except ones that require discreet graphics (not gaming or video editing machines)
but even then, you could get a w520/w530 and do those things too, but at a higher price
